05.01.2022 4 TIPS FOR RODENT CONTROL A rodent population explosion is highly imminent this year. Our buildings offer warmth, shelter, protection and food to rodents. But as most of us do not want these pests on our property, what can we do to avoid a rodent invasion?... Tip 1: Start from the outside. Rodents will often hide in long grass, wood piles and other areas of shelter outside, before venturing inside. Keeping grass short and minimising areas where rodents can hide near your building, will help reduce rodent presence. Tip 2: Restrict access points. This is not easy as rodents can enter through very small holes but if there are known entry points, blocking these with fine mesh or other means to prevent entry is a good idea. Tip 3: Limit food sources. Rodents will first be attracted by the presence of food, both outside and inside. Limiting food sources by ensuring rubbish bins are closed and sealed, keeping food in sealed bags or containers, Tip 4: If you already have a rodent problem, what should you do? For existing rodent problems, the best option initially is to use traps or proven bait stations, to remove the resident rodents. 04.01.2022 Why Rats Are So Hard to Trap If you’ve ever had a rat problem in your home, you know just how frustrating the situation can be to resolve. Rest assured, you’re not alone: Nearly 30 percent of Australian households have had a rodent invasion. It can happen to anyone, anywhere. The trick is evicting the rats before the problem gets out of hand. Unfortunately, trapping a rator two or tenis actually a lot harder than it sounds. Let’s take a look at some of the reasons why:... 1. They’re larger than mice: This is a common issue with traditional rodent traps: They’re often not the right size to catch rats. 2. Different species have different diets: Most rat traps rely on bait to attract rodents. Homeowners often use bits of cheese or a smear of peanut butter as bait and then wonder why their traps aren’t working. 3. Rats can be pretty darn clever: Rats are inherently suspicious of anything new, so when a trap appears in their environment, they’re probably going to avoid it for a while. 4. They travel carefully: Rats don’t often dart out in the middle of a room or yard; they like to play it safe by scurrying along walls and fences. 5. They reproduce quickly: Rats can reproduce every 21 days, so it can be difficult to fully eradicate a single family using traditional trapping techniques.
