24.01.2022 We are so proud of our wonderful volunteers who have just returned from a successful trip to Dili. There were 80 consultations, 41 surgeries including 27 cleft lip/ palate operations. This brings the total cleft lip/ palate operations in Dili since first trip in 2000, 1065! Dr Jaoa, local surgeon has performed 165 on his own. 21.01.2022 (Pictured: Joy & Mok) Update on life in Dili, Timor Leste: Last week, Mok, one of our medical colleagues in Dili, had a phone call with long time OSSAA team nurse and educator, Joy.... Though Mok is sad that OSSAA is unable to send teams at this time due to the pandemic, Mok is hopeful that now he will have more time to make improvements to the hospital. Our OSSAA medical professionals are looking forward to what Mok is calling "big changes". The hospital is busy and procuring PPE is proving difficult, like the rest of the world. Surgical masks are having to be used for whole shifts. There is no alcohol hand wash available, however all staff are using soap and water regularly. We are relieved to hear there are no known COVID-19 cases at the main hospital all such cases are managed at a separate facility called the Vera Cruz Clinic. The health workers at that clinic work in cycles of one week on and two weeks in quarantine at a hotel. If a COVID-19 patient needs surgery, main hospital staff are sent to the clinic to undertake the procedure. Other than occasional procedures at the clinic, no surgery has taken place off-site, though a planned C-section is expected soon. In the first week of COVID-19 restrictions, Mok asked his wife to buy a box of masks for his family, which at the time were $2.50 a box. Later that same week, the box price jumped to $22. Everyone in public is wearing a mask, and as they are now either difficult to find or unreasonably expensive, those who were unable to purchase any have by and large made their own. Schools are closed and only essential workers are meant to be out each day. Movement is highly restricted: travel between districts is not allowed, with checkpoints to enforce this, and no buses are running. Shops are only open from 8am to 6pm, which is unusual as shops in Dili are normally open until quite late. At this stage, food is still available, although many have stockpiled due to concerns about future availability. Mok plans to send his daughters to stay with their grandmother until the outbreak is contained and eliminated, but has to go through the necessarily arduous process of organising transport papers for them. Mok has faith in the government and believes they are doing a good job in implementing and managing the necessary strategies and restrictions for the sake of public health. A big thank you to Joy for sharing this update with us and passing along a valuable insight into life on the ground in Dili.

14.01.2022 An update from Sister Franseline in Cancar at St. Damian Hospital. Letting us know that at the moment they are well, patients are staying isolated within their community and wards. In this photo, we see many are getting a designated half hour in the sun before returning to shelter. We here at OSSAA hope everyone in Cancar stays safe and healthy during these difficult times.

11.01.2022 'The Economic Value of the Delivery of Primary Cleft Surgery in Timor Leste 2000-2017' is an incredibly informative article published on the 6th of February in the World Journal of Surgery. The article provides valuable insight on the positive economic outcomes of cleft surgery in Timor Leste since 1999. It features among its contributors longtime OSSAA team leader Mark Moore.

06.01.2022 Our team is still hard at work in Dili. They start early at 8am and dont stop until nearly 7pm. There are some amazing differences post surgery for cleft lip patients and also the release of burn contractures.

03.01.2022 Vale Dr. John Hargrave AO FRACS, who passed away in Hobart on the 6th of August 2020 at the age of 89. It was on the shoulders of this incredible human being that OSSAA was built. John undertook humanitarian work specialising in burns and leprosy in Timor Leste and Indonesia (specifically Nusa Tenggara Timur) since the early 1990s, after having done so much extraordinary work treating leprosy in Aboriginal communities in NT.... With Hargrave's retirement in 2000, the surgeons of OSSAA have worked hard and with great passion to carry on his incredible legacy. We hope we can continue striving to strengthen this quiet hero's vision for our neighbours in need.
