22.01.2022 What's happening in Colombia it's not a political mobilisation, it is a SOCIAL mobilisation. The mobilisation that started one month ago, and has mobilised hundreds of thousands of Colombians, and above all, has generated systematic violations of Human Rights has a social cause. The root cause has nothing to do with political parties or electoral campaigns. Why is it happening? The National Department of Statistics (DANE) recently published the study of poverty in the coun...try. More than 20 million people today live below the poverty line. In the last year, 3.551.522 people entered poverty. This means that 42.5% of the people in Colombia live with less than 89 USD per month. The situation further worsened with the effects of the Covid 19 pandemic that has led to more than 15 months of partial and total closures of the country's economy. Under these conditions, the government decided to propose a tax reform to increase taxes on the lower/middle class. This was the trigger for the manifestation. But not the only cause. Who are the people out in the streets? In the streets, the majority are young people. The unemployment rate for youth in Colombia is 23.5%. The outlook is even more bleak when the report details that 28%, around 3.5 million young Colombians, do not work or study. And the reason is not negligence. In Colombia, access to Higher Education and a first job is not easily accessible, it is considered a privilege. New generations got tired of these conditions and came out to express this. The streets of the country are experiencing daily moments of violence, confrontation and excessive force in a scenario in which there have been deaths, disappearances, illegal arrests and the use of lethal weapons by some members of the public force.
