24.01.2022 Come on you know it's true!!

24.01.2022 Dan ,the world is watching and is appalled at what you and Parks Victoria are doing , You can stop this massacre . Have you read the Silver Brumby books ? Have... you watched The Man from Snowy River ? Will you tell your children you killed the Heritage horses that these stories are about ,when they read or watch ? Will you document the killing ? Will you make sure they are killed humanely? Will you take responsibility for this horrific act of destruction ? Its not too late , stop the guns now #brumbylivesmatter See more

22.01.2022 Staggers Alert! After several calls from people whose horses have developed staggers here is some helpful information: Signs of Staggers:... Muscular weakness giving out in the hind quarters Looks like theyre drunk . Plaiting with the front legs while walking, see video Heavy on the forehand, stumbling/tripping over nothing . Uncharacteristic stopping at jumps . Cant seem to back up Standing base wide . Trouble judging distances especially 'depth' - as if their eyesight is affected, . Spooks at things underneath them, ie while jumping Hypersensitive to sounds The Zonked look (Sleepy eyed, ears askew - see pic) Difficulty walking downhill For every extreme case, where the horse develops full blown staggers and it's really obvious, there are hundreds of mild to moderate cases with maybe just a touch of one or more of these symptoms best not to ignore them! There are actually several possible causes of Staggers: 1. : The mycotoxin Lolitrem B which is produced by the endophyte in perennial rye grass and Tall Fescue (if you are in North America). If your horse is grazing either of these grasses the season for problems with the Lolitrem B mycotoxin is from late summer through to Autumn. Fungi in general tend to produce myco-toxins in times or regions of humidity (northern parts of NZ and many regions of Australia). Autumn is a time to add Tox-All ( https://www.calmhealthyhorses.shop/products/toxall ) to your horse's daily feeds. However a significant number of horses still develop staggers when there is very little, if any, rye-grass in the pastures. This happens because of the other cause of staggers : 2. The mineral imbalances caused by the rapid Autumn (or Spring) grass growth - especially after a drought-breaking rain. Rapidly growing grass of any species, especially after drought breaking rain when it suddenly turns green, is very potent because it is FULL of potassium and nitrogen (at the same time as being devoid of salt). The symptoms of staggers are due to the ensuing disruption to normal nerve and muscle function which cause problems with coordination as well as weakness in the hind-quarters. 'Staggers' is common anywhere there are cool-season grasses (NZ, the UK, lower regions of Australia). NO amount of toxin binder is going to help the horse if it is the mineral imbalance variety of staggers. 3. Wobbler Syndrome - where there is a malformation of the vertebrae of the neck which compresses the spinal cord, verifiable by X-Ray, usually only seen in younger horses. How do you tell the difference? The first way to know is that the Lolitrem B myco-toxin is only found in Perennial Rye-Grass so if your horse pasture doesnt contain this grass you know it isnt a mycotoxin problem. If your horse pasture is any of the endophyte-free strains of rye-grass you know the cause cannot possibly be a mycotoxin either; it will be due to the mineral imbalances. Therefore, besides taking the horse off the offending pasture temporarily and feeding ad-lib hay, you will need to add salt, Graze Ezy and AlleviateC/SOS until the horse regains his co-ordination and his muscles strengthen up. (https://www.calmhealthyhorses.shop/collections/grass-issues) Avoid lucerne and clover because both are high in potassium and nitrogen (and devoid of salt) so they only add to the problem. Time frames to regain coordination vary from horse to horse but are usually around 1-10 days. If you dont see improvements after 2-3 days contact us to help identify what is getting in the way. It is very important to keep the horse SAFE while he is so unsteady, make sure there is ZERO possibility he could accidentally stagger or fall into fences, down steep hills or into ditches. The moral of the story is to fortify your horse prior to these changes in the grass by adding Salt, GrazeEzy, AlleviateC/SOS to their daily feeds. The Video on this page of our website (http://calmhealthyhorses.com/neuro/staggers.html ) shows a horse Plaiting while he is walking. The pictures illustrate the more subtle signs of Staggers: Standing Base Wide, the Zonked look and a horse who clearly has some issues with judging distance/height!

20.01.2022 A reward is offered to anyone that has information that leads me to my horse. NOW PRESUMED STOLEN Have you seen this horse?... Unbranded 9yr old appy x Qh mare. Stands at 14hh. Is built like a tank. Has two distinctive cuts/splits at the top of each ear about 1cm long. She was last seen on Monday morning (17th of feb). We presume she was stolen from our front paddock along the road either during the day when everybody was away or in the middle of the night. (Oakfield road Tansey) We have exhausted every other option and she is nowhere on our property or the neighbours properties. We bred her and not once in her life has she ever gone through a fence or escaped. So please if you have seen or heard anything about a horse like this please contact myself or the police! 0417644214

19.01.2022 Please do online ombudsman complaint it was quick and easy UPDATE: 8 riders pulled together a possy for a muster. I realise this is south of the border, but Snowy Groups could learn from this. I'm waiting for an update. If you are as disgraced by this as I am, Write to the Ombudsman ([https://www.ombudsman.vic.gov.au/contact-us/_](https://www.ombudsman.vic.gov.au/contact-us/_)... - Leave feedback on the Parks Victoria feedback page ([https://www.parks.vic.gov.au/compliments-and-complaints](https://www.parks.vic.gov.au/compliments-and-complaints)) - Write to the Independent Broad-Based Anti-Corruption Commission (IBAC) details on the Parks Vic page above. Parks don't have their hands tied, they are doing what they want to do. I don't think we can stop them by appealing to them. I believe that the only way to stop them now is through political influence and writing to the Ombudsman, IBAC etc. The vet is an independent Equine Specialist.

19.01.2022 Yesterday was a very sad day. Our Australian government gave the go ahead for to kill ALL AUSTRALIAN BRUMBIES who cant find homes. This is Esther Levi and Diam...antinas heritage that will no longer live wild and free. I feel extremely privileged to have these beautiful horses in my life and just like the whole brumby community we all feel we have lost a huge part of what we have been trying so dang hard for so long to save. Share this far and wide so the whole world can see just what these horses who built our country will now have to go through. #BrumbyLivesMatter #PoweredByDynavyte Dynavyte #VBAEsther #VBALevi #VBADiamantina #VBAPilot #AustralianBrumby If your wanting to help out brumbies make sure you sign this petition Click here to sign - https://www.change.org/p/stop-targeting-our-brumbies

18.01.2022 (A horse pulled from a killpen, displaying extreme discomfort and agression) This is why providing proper dental care for your horse is NOT optional, and it's n...ot up to preference. Don't expect your horses to perform their best for you if you won't do your best for them. A true horseman will provide for their animals above all else. See more

17.01.2022 UNDERSTANDING HOW DOGS CONTROL THEIR BODY TEMPERATURE WHEN IT's HOT! Lots of misunderstandings circulating on this topic. Apologies for the graph but I hope I c...an show why it's needed and explain it clearly. This is some data redrawn from the work of the great animal physiologist Charles Richard (CR) Taylor (1939-1995). What this shows is how dogs lose heat in different environmental conditions (ambient temperatures). KEY PRINCIPLES The dog's body temperature is around 38C. The ambient temperatures in which the dog was studied ranged from warm (21C) to very hot (41C). CONVECTIVE HEAT LOSS - this is the way in which heat moves from the skin (or coat surface) to the surrounding air. No evaporation or direct contact is involved. The thicker the coat the slower they lose heat. A dog's thick coat insulates! Keeps heat in! Makes it hotter. EVAPORATIVE HEAT LOSS - reduction in temperature caused by evaporation of water from the respiratory tract (breathing, panting) or evaporation of sweat. Metabolism - Chemical reactions in the body that produce heat. Exercise - Muscles are not very efficient at turning stored food energy into heat. When dogs exercise around 80% of the energy they use ends up as heat, the majority of which they must try and get rid of. A rise in body temperature from ~38C to 40C can trigger heat illness. Ambient = surrounding air temperature HOW DO DOGS CONTROL BODY TEMPERATURE? 21C AMBIENT TEMPERATURE - Dogs lose a lot of heat by convection because there is a big difference between their body temperature and the surrounding air. Only a fraction of the total heat lost is by evaporation. 26-31C AMBIENT TEMPERATURE - Convective heat loss is reduced as the surrounding air is closer to the dog's body temperature. But even at 31C air temperature around the dog, only around 40% of the total heat loss comes from evaporation and only 20% from respiratory heat loss. 20% comes from the evaporation of sweat from the pads, nose and apocrine glands at the base of hairs (see previous post - dogs do sweat under their coat). 36C AMBIENT TEMPERATURE - As the air temperature around the dog is now close to skin temperature (which is usually a few C lower than central body temperature), the potential for heat to be lost by convection is small and whilst sweating continues, heat loss from panting now accounts for 75% of the heat dissipated (got rid of). 41C AMBIENT TEMPERATURE - The dog is now getting rid of almost twice as much heat as it was having to at 31C. The air surrounding the dog is now heating it up (heat is moving from the environment into the dog). Convective heat loss is now zero. 90% of heat loss comes from panting. SUMMARY Whilst panting is efficient at cooling dogs down, it places great stress on the body, especially on the heart and respiratory systems. That's why it's important that old dogs, overweight dogs, brachycephalic breeds and dogs with heart or respiratory problems should not be allowed to stay panting and should be kept cool or cooled down when they start to pant! SHORT VERSION - When the surrounding air temperature is ~31C or below the main way dogs get rid of the heat they produce in their bodies from metabolism at rest or exercise is by CONVECTION (loss from the surface - through the skin and coat, so the thicker the coat the slower they lose heat). Respiratory heat loss from PANTING only starts to take over as the main mechanism once the dog's temperature and ambient temperature converge i.e. around 36C. The ambient temperature at which dogs start to pant may be lower in overweight dogs, dogs with thick coats, large dogs, dogs that are not acclimated to the heat, unfit dogs, brachycephalic breeds, dogs with respiratory disease, older dogs and dogs with heart conditions.

16.01.2022 I am currently still working. Please stay safe.

13.01.2022 I was at the Oxford Museum this afternoon photographing someone for Ox Observer when I noticed these horse skulls. The guy I was talking with told me that the h...orse in the top photo was 33 when he died. Check out his lower jaw and the damage to it caused by lack of dental care. The poor horse must have been in agony. Compare it to skull on right which is from a 3 year old horse. It is vital that horses get regular dental care and this is a very good example of exactly why. :-/ See more

13.01.2022 Top horse is 20 with regular occlusal equilibration performed annually. Bottom horse is 17 and had teeth floated regularly. But never had occlusal equilibration.... All I can say is horse owners need to demand to see what is being done in their horse's mouth. Change in our profession will come much faster if the public puts pressure and demands higher standards of care in equine dentistry. This is the problem you get when a very small percentage of often not very experienced practitioners that control and bottleneck the information that comes into veterinary continuing education meetings and universities. If you want a broad view i.e. depth and breadth, you have to have more than a handful of people in a click leading a program. Takes guts and integrity to listen to outsiders who might know a few things you don't. But then again that requires leadership. Much easier sitting in a room with close friends tapping each other on the back. No waves. No ruffled feathers. No character. No progress. PS: this is geared for the US and not my international colleagues which are much more open minded and forward thinking (mostly)

11.01.2022 Here is a radiograph of an almost two year old horse. It is that time of year when people get excited about getting their two year olds to a trainer to get star...ted under saddle. Here is a perfect example of why not to be in such a hurry. This horse will be two in May and when we sent these radiographs of his knees/carpus to a specialist at a university. We were told this horse should not be started in a training program for another 10-12 months because his growth plates in his knees were not closed enough. Starting a horse that is not physically mature enough can have long term effects like osteoarthritis and chronic lameness issues. If you have any doubt, you can always have radiographs done to see if the growth plates are closed enough for the work required by a training program. See more

09.01.2022 This is SUCH a big thing in horses. So often I hear hed be better off with a rider who can take him further or hes too good/talented for a rider like me. ...Heres the thing. A horse has no idea if hes good, bad, talented, useless, a Giselle or a fucking pigeon. Horses only want kindness, comfort and a metric shit-ton to eat. They dont know that gymkhanas, Olympic Games or factories even exist. Horses only know that youre nice to them, or not. Everything else is whatever to them. Inside Track Eventing See more

09.01.2022 Sudden onset blindness and dilated pupils. This is ivermectin toxicity due to eating a little bit of horse wormer that the horse spat out. She is staying overnight for IV fluids and a detox. #dogseateverything

08.01.2022 Somewhere right now is an eventer, gutted that their season is over before its begun. There is a full livery who doesnt know when theyll next be able to see their horse due to lockdown. There is a DIY livery struggling to find the hours in the day whilst working overtime in an essential role. There is a rider with an arena, disappointed that all their training and competitions are cancelled. There is a rider without an arena, wondering how they are going to stay on top of... schooling. There is a freelancer, trying their best to make ends meet as yards close and clients run out of money. There are vets, farriers and dentists risking their health because they refuse to compromise horse welfare. There is a rider feeling guilty for riding because the hoards have called them selfish, despite it being the only way to keep them mentally ok. There is a rider feeling deflated and low, because they have chosen not to ride as they dont want to risk a fall. And somewhere out there is a little girl, stuck inside, looking at the posters on her wall wishing she could have her own pony, after her riding lessons were cancelled indefinitely. Everyones problems are relative. Make the best of what youve got and be grateful for it, because the likelihood is...someone out there will be wishing they have what youve got. Stay safe, be kind. cromwellandlucy

08.01.2022 Nothing annoys me more than lazy horse owners. If you want to rug your horse that's fine but take the damn rug off when it warms up. to many horses with synthetic combos on today. Put on a plastic rain jacket and go sit in the sun. See how you like it.

08.01.2022 11 years ago this was my first attempt in a live horse!!! After practising on skulls, which was ummmm stinky. This was so difficult as its tongue seemed to be in my way ah memories

04.01.2022 Today Horse SA has written to Ministers Greg Hunt MP (Health), David Littleproud MP (Agriculture), Stephen Wade MLC (Health SA), Corey Wingard MP (Rec, Sport, R...acing SA), Tim Whetsone MP (Primary Industries SA) RE: Essential services recognition - Horse and Animal Industries. It is well documented through university research studies on disasters such as bushfires, that owners are more likely to follow government instructions if advice includes their animals. We are therefore writing to raise awareness about: 1. An alert on the impending animal welfare silent tsunami due to significant job losses. 2. The need to establish a cross-government, industry and non-profit special task force to advise the government on animal industries (agricultural and non-agricultural purposes) welfare, jobs and business sustainability. In the letter, Horse SA discussed the following issues: DAILY CARE OF HORSES: The keeping of horses on agistment, particularly around our capital cities and regional centres. The horse care service levels provided by the landowner vary, with DIY options prevalent. Often, there is no resident landowner who lives on-site, or who has horse skills-while some studs and stables may have staff. Solutions to allow for the ongoing care of horses, and owners to meet their obligations under state animal welfare laws. One possible solution is to recognise the carrying a Property Identification Code (PIC) card to act as a form of evidence for the trip to visit horses for care. ISSUE: EMERGENCY CARE OF HORSES There is a need for the formal recognition of veterinarians and veterinary nurses to as essential services, including the supporting industries of animal medicine and supplement manufacturers and transporters. To review state and national veterinary acts and veterinary pharmaceutical regulations to ensure remote/telemedicine treatment options are available. A veterinarian could be provided with the authority to issue legally recognised prescriptions for a trade or skill for a non-essential person (as listed/not listed on a government COVID-19 response) to attend to the horse, where housing, fodder or water source is deemed a priority. ISSUE: ANIMAL INDUSTRIES SUPPORT SERVICES. Essential for the care of horses and other livestock are stock feed transporters, Stock Feed and supplement manufacturers, processors, suppliers and stores. Essential services recognition for horse and animal transporters; these services undertake tasks including moving horses from stabling to pasture, to veterinary clinics, crematoriums or a new carer if the owner becomes sick or in isolation due to COVID-19. Further, there is a need for hoof, dental and animal breeding (artificial insemination) service providers (which may be by veterinary referral in emergencies). Finally, to consider rural contractors who undertake the spraying for toxic weeds and bury stock. ISSUE: THE SILENT ANIMAL WELFARE TSUNAMI. The significant loss of jobs will see people unable to afford rent, food and unfortunately, to keep their animals. Abandonment of horses on agistment properties with unpaid fees, an increased caseload relating to neglect, dumping of horses at already full rescue centres and issues surrounding the disposal of deceased horses. With the closure of sale yards as a pathway to slaughter, the side effects from this situation alone are unknown. The RSPCA inspectorate is likely to find an increasing demand for services. There is no single solution to the potential silent animal welfare tsunami, with one option to consider the establishment of a cross-government, industry and non-profit special task force to advise the government on animal industries (agricultural and non-agricultural purposes). It is well documented through studies on disasters such as bushfires, that owners are more likely to follow government instructions if advice includes their animals. While we are all hoping that more substantial future restrictions do not take place, it may be inevitable. Please do not hesitate to make contact to discuss any items further. END Footnote: Horse SA is a non-profit member-based organisation working with and for horse owners and organisations on a wide range of common interest issues and topics.
