25.01.2022 Today is World Environment Day! Whilst the dark cloud of COVID-19 has changed our lives dramatically, there have certainly been some silver linings for our planet. In addition to major breakthroughs like carbon emissions plummeting around the world, crystal clear waters and the Himalayas in full view for the first time in decades, we should pause for a moment to reflect on what we have learnt at home. Our Grandmas would be proud as we got back to basics; making things from sc...ratch, growing things, shopping for what we need, cooking up what we had in stock and learning new skills in the kitchen from baking cakes to sourdough bread! Along with the sight of empty supermarket shelves and restaurants closed, the value of food came back on our radar as we slowed down and re-connected to the important things in life. Lets take the time to invest in our precious planet and not lose what weve learnt through this extraordinary time. Lets not waste this opportunity to go forward in to a new way of living #worldenvironmentday #fightfoodwaste #loveyourfood

04.01.2022 This week, OzHarvest Melbournes Food Essential Box program surpassed 10,000 deliveries! That's more than 132,000kgs of nutritious food packed and delivered to agencies across Victoria, splashing yellow from Echuca to Lorne. Over 380,000 meals helping over 40,000 Aussies doing it tough during the COVID period. We received word from an agency in Clifton Hill this week describing the direct impact the Food Essential Boxes are having in their community: A mother of two primary ...school aged children was home schooling during the more restrictive lockdown period. She says the quality of the fruit meant the children were happy to reach for this as a snack and the quantity lasted many days after delivery. She also said the money she saved in not buying food, she is putting aside for school costs. She says the children do not usually do extra- curricular activities and this year, if they recommence, she is hoping each of them will be able to take up one opportunity. This is only one story from just one agency we deliver to and there are many more stories of hope out there. To help us continue to deliver goodness and share hope with someone doing it tough, please donate at https://events.ozharvest.org/hereforhope or share the link.

03.01.2022 Got leftover cabbage? No worries! Make your very own vegan kimchi with these simple steps: Chop up your leftover cabbage into chunks about 3cm wide (we used half a Chinese cabbage). Wash thoroughly and drain, then massage with lots of salt. Leave in the fridge overnight. The next day, rinse your cabbage and squeeze out all the excess liquid. In a mixing bowl, add the cabbage, a handful of chopped chives and a chopped spring onion. If you dont have any chives use grated... carrot instead. For the sauce, blend a 3cm chunk of ginger, half a bulb of garlic, 2 tbs of apple cider vinegar, 1 tbs of maple syrup and 2 tbs of light soy sauce into a fine paste. Combine the sauce and cabbage mix along with 1 cup of chilli powder and store in an airtight container. This delicious condiment will be ready to eat in 1-2 days and can be enjoyed for months if you dont eat it all at once! #fightfoodwaste Image & recipe by Lucy Leonardi Who Does The Dishes See more
