20.01.2022 ‘Water battery’ a winner for Australian university In the first year of operation, the thermal energy storage tank saved 4,232 tonnes of CO2 emissions with 3,082 tonnes saved by the University of the Sunshine Coast through using solar power instead of grid electricity, and the rest by feeding solar energy into the grid. An award-winning Australian solar-powered water battery has been lauded as an unmitigated success with figures from the University of the Sunshine Coast (...USC) revealing the system generated more than 3 GWh of electricity in its first 12 months of operation. The thermal energy storage tank, located at USC’s main campus on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, is powered by a 2.1 MW solar PV system which produces enough energy to cool 4.5 megalitres of water, effectively acting as an 8 MW battery. The cooled water is stored and used for air conditioning, which is currently the single biggest user of electricity at the campus, accounting for approximately 60% of its energy use. In the first year of operation it saved 4,232 tonnes of CO2 emissions with 3,082 tonnes saved by USC through using solar power instead of grid electricity, and the rest by Veolia feeding solar energy into the grid. It is expected the system will save more than 100,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions over the 25-year life of the project, equivalent to the emissions of 525 average Australian houses for the same period. It is one of the new breed of renewable projects designed to provide predictable power more uniformly across the day and when complete will be one of the southern hemisphere’s largest hybrid renewable power stations. Located approximately 8 km south-east of Port Augusta in South Australia, the project will occupy ap...proximately 5,400 hectares of land running from Port Paterson in the north, to Winninowie in the south and span the A1 Augusta Highway. PAREP is 100% owned by Iberdrola Renewables Australia (Iberdrola) with support from DP Energy who is the original developer of the site. It will comprise of 50 wind turbines and 250,000 solar modules together with associated infrastructure, to produce a total installed capacity of almost 320 megawatts (MW) of clean renewable energy. A new 275kV substation and export cable will connect the project into the South Australian transmission network via Davenport substation. Once in commercial operation, PAREP will generate clean electricity for around 25 years prior to being either decommissioned or redeveloped.

After getting in contact and organising for a meeting with Frans, we discovered that there was a lot of work to be done for this system. Not only did the roof need to be replaced, but there were multiple large gum trees casting a significant amount of shade on the roof space which was most optimal to use. After some discussion with Frans we had determined that w...e could cut down one of the trees, but that the rest would not cause too much trouble through the use of SolarEdge optimisers. By having each panel fire up individually and not having to wait for the whole string to receive sunlight, we knew that a SolarEdge solution would make sense for Frans business.
