We have the opportunity to respond to their needs, support them emotionally, & connect with them. In doing this, we help our children learn to self-regulate. The more empathic when we are when our children are distressed, the more understood a child feels, & the more they are able to calm themselves.... 10.01.2022 To make this separation easier the following can help: Have a consistent & predictable bedtime routine with 2-3 enjoyable & calm activities to prepare your child for sleep. Things like having a warm bath, reading stories, & singing a soothing song create positive associations with bedtime, & help to create a relaxed environment. When your child is in bed talk about what is going to happen in the future. E.g. ‘after you have had a beautiful sle...ep we will have a good morning cuddle, & then we are going to do ... ’ refocusing their attention on the next connection, rather than the bedtime separation. Avoid the temptation to sneak out of your child’s bedroom. Always say goodnight before leaving the room, otherwise your child might become even more anxious about you leaving, not knowing when it might happen. A poll conducted by the National Sleep Foundation found that a cool room temperature was one of the most important factors in getting a good night’s sleep. This ‘ideal’ temperature for older children & adults is approximately 18’C. There may be some individual variances between people, with some people preferring their room slightly warmer or slightly cooler, but in general around 18’C appears to be right for most. ...
