08.01.2022 Meet Shawkat, an immigrant from Afghanistan who, after moving to Australia, discovered a love for our local game at Kilburn Football Club. He has also brought w...ith him a new wave of supporters who are keen to learn about the game, blazing a trail for other members of the Afghani community eager to embrace Aussie Rules. A keen cricketer, Shawkat incorporates the values of mateship, teamwork, and community spirit. He has also shown an amazing ability to learn and develop new skills at a sport largely foreign to him. The footy club has warmly welcomed and embraced Shawkat whilst respecting his background and cultural values. We asked Shawkat what he loves about the club and he told us, "Id never played footy before. I thought it was a hard game to play, and youd get injured every game, but I was wrong. The teammates had my back all the time and teach me new things that I need to know. Footy is the new game in my life. He also loved how welcome the club made him feel, the footy guys helped me a lot and make me feel welcome to the new game. The club feels like my second home" He has also provided a liaison between the Afghani and Australian cultures, creating a wonderful link for all people ensuring everyone respects each others core values and beliefs.
