18.01.2022 Pako Festa Elements of Culture Community Portrait #8 of 12 Biser - Macedonian Community Geelong Folk Costumes in Macedonia have a tradition that lasts for centuries. They are part of the material culture of the Macedonian people and an important branch of folk art. Created as a collective benefit of all Macedonian people, they have been passed from generation to generation for many years and during their development, they included many elements of the diverse cultural influe...nces that have crossed that part of the Balkans. Different historical, social, economic and cultural events are reflected in their creation and design. The older the embroidery pattern is, the deeper meaning it has. Modern embroidery designs, usually, just mimic flowers, leaves, and animals, while in millenniums-old patterns, every stitch may have a meaning. People used to invent a new design for each person. Often, they encrypted names, phrases, or important symbols into the embroidery. The first letter M is seen everywhere in the authentic embroidery patterns of Macedonian National Costumes. This is seen in the design of the woven in the apron below. Photos: Chrissie Francis Photography

13.01.2022 Pako Festa Elements of Culture Community Portrait #12 of 12 Representing The Ukrainian Community Geelong The history of the Ukrainian floral headdress dates back to ancient times. The Ukrainian flower crown, known as a vinok is a type of wreath which traditionally is worn by girls and young, unmarried women.... There are about 80 kinds of wreaths and all of them are closely associated with holidays and different events. Each flower and ribbon in a Ukrainian vinok has a meaning because it is not only a thing of beauty but also a lucky charm. One of the oldest Ukrainian symbols is the head wreath woven from grasses and flowers and decorated with bright ribbons. There can be up to 12 different flowers in one wreath. Each flower means something: roses stands for love, lilies are symbols of purity and innocence, cornflowers simplicity ad modesty, daisies peace and tenderness and the symbol of Ukraine, the guilder rose, is a symbol of maiden beauty. The vinok was always decorated with different coloured ribbons, which were cut lower than a girls braids in order to hide them. 03.01.2022 Pako Festa Elements Of Culture Community Portrait #6 of 12 Representing The Combined Dutch Clubs Of Geelong Karnaval dates back approximately to the 10th century... The Festival of Karnaval was created so that people could enjoy themselves prior to the serious 40 day fast in the lead up to Easter. At the time, European countries were ruled by noblemen (kings and princes), who did not believe in freedom of speech. Only court jesters were allowed to speak freely and criticise the rulers in song and play, which is why the Karnaval hats and uniforms are so colourful. Over the years, Karnaval underwent changes and Karnaval clubs were formed to keep the old traditions and organise festivities. A number of Karnaval Clubs have been formed in Australia to carry on the old tradition of Karnaval. One of these is Karnaval Club "The Swallows" founded on the 7th day of the 7th month of 1977 of which I am a founding member. Photo: Chrissie Francis Photography

03.01.2022 Pako Festa Elements Of Culture Community Portrait #7 of 12 Representing Hkud Lado Geelong The costumes from Kupineki Kraljevac, a village located in the Pokuplje region, are arguably some of the most beautiful Croatia has to offer. ... The womens costumes come in a range of different colours, with red being the most prominent among young women and brides until their first child was born. The red woven pattern and beading was worn as an amulet, believed to protect women from evil forces and to give them many children. Married women begin to wear a cap richly adorned with woven fabric, multi-coloured beads and mirrors, as seen in the image. This is festive headgear for married women, with the colour worn indicating their age and social rank. Women in mourning would wear a much simpler white costume without the decorative beading. Look out for this beautiful costume, worn by Lados senior members, in the Pako Festa parade! Photo: Chrissie Francis Photography

02.01.2022 Pako Festa Elements of Culture Community Portrait #4 of 12 Representing the Russian Community of Geelong KOKOSHNIK Kokoshnik is a symbol of Russian female national costume. It is a headpiece in the form of a crescent and a festive decoration of the costume. Kokoshniks in Russia differ in their shape, method of cutting and decoration. The appearance of the kokoshnik, as well as the entire national costume, depended on which region of Russia it was sewn in.
