25.01.2022 Home based care and community health teams require a diversity of funding models. Post COVID ,it is most unlikely that community health care will return to its pre-COVID state.

24.01.2022 Palliative Care ACT is grateful for the bipartisan pledges of support for our non-clinical respite facility from the Labor and Liberal Parties during the 2020 election campaign. Our team are ready to expand our services to support more people in the community wishing to be cared for in their own home. #choices #lifechoices #endoflifecare

23.01.2022 There's more to say after RUOK. Funding from the COVID-19 Mental Health and Wellbeing Innovation Grant will ensure we can check with our team of carers every day if they're OK. Palliative Care ACT will be able to provide immediate support for carers who are supporting terminally ill patients during the COVID-19 pandemic. #ruokday2020 #carers #palliativecare #volunteers

22.01.2022 Great news for residents of aged care facilities and their loved ones

21.01.2022 Friends of Palliative Care ACT Morning Tea hosted by Palliative Care ACT’s patron Shirley Sutton AM PSM --------------------------------------------------------------- The first of our Friends of Palliative Care ACT events was held today to acknowledge the wonderful people who have volunteered and worked with our organisation over the years. People who have been involved with Palliative Care ACT know well the importance of quality palliative and end of life care. Once involved they often continue advocating for it long after their involvement with us, and many have done so throughout our proud 35 year history. Shirley Sutton AM PSM brought everyone up to speed with our recent work over a cuppa and a light lunch. #palliativecare #community

21.01.2022 If you work, or have previously worked, within an inpatient setting for palliative care in Australia the University of Newcastle would love to hear your views. Researchers are trying to understand how the spaces in which palliative care is delivered can be better designed to support patients, their families and healthcare teams through end of life experiences. Specifically, how the design of inpatient environments work (functionally) for each group - and what could improve th...em - alongside how the appearance of these environments make people feel. The survey takes 15-20 minutes, please click on the link to respond: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/FDLJR7S Please feel free to forward this invitation to colleagues at other hospitals who may be interested. Data from this survey will contribute to a multi-method research study that will gather views from patients, family members and staff. 21.01.2022 Palliative Care ACT understands dealing with illness in the workplace is not easy and has developed the Life-limiting Illnesses in the Workplace series to provide organisations and employees with some best practice resources and information to help. These toolkits should also initiate, and help develop, workplace policies and practices to support employees in their time of need. During National Palliative Care Week 2020 Palliative Care ACT are launching the second toolkit in the series. The toolkits can be accessed at www.pallcareact.org.au/life-limiting-illnesses-in-the-work/

21.01.2022 Spring is in the air at Palliative Care ACT's office! Palliative Care ACT General Manager Julie thanks Elvin Group's Chris for dropping in to make sure we're doing OK. Our team can't thank the Elvin Group enough for their support. Their generosity enables us to deliver more vital services to people with life-limiting illnesses in the ACT. Finding funding at the moment is tough, so every dollar we save is critical. The Elvin Group are certainly on our heroes list! #communitysupport

21.01.2022 A re-elected ACT Labor Government will improve care for older Canberrans through major investments at Calvary Public Hospital Bruce and a new partnership with P...alliative Care ACT. With an ageing population, we will ensure our public health facilities are better prepared for older Canberrans, including those experiencing confusion and dementia. Calvary is a nation leader in developing innovative responses to the needs of older people, including acute care evaluation and palliative care needs rounds in aged care facilities. Building on Calvary’s expertise, a re-elected Labor Government will establish a Centre for Excellence in Caring for Older People at Calvary Public Hospital Bruce, expanding both its inpatient capacity and outreach programs. A re-elected Labor Government will also partner with Palliative Care ACT to establish a respite hub for people with life-limiting illness who wish to die at home, supporting families and carers to meet the needs of their loves. And for those people who are approaching the end of their lives in Canberra Hospital, Labor will establish a dedicated palliative care ward to provide dignity and comfort for patients. Find out more about ACT Labor's plan to deliver better healthcare where and when Canberrans need it: https://www.actlabor.org.au/blog/act-election-announcements

19.01.2022 Palliative Care - it's more than you think. During National Palliative Care Week 2020, Palliative Care ACT President Louise Mayo AM tells us what good pallitive care support means

19.01.2022 The Wine Trolley has been getting some attention lately (and not just by our friends at Clare Holland House!). We recently received a call from the lovely folk at ‘We Happy Few’ Wines asking if they could help with a donation from their cellars. We Happy Few produce high quality, handmade wine by Australian Veterans. Each bottle sold supports veteran welfare. There are a few very nice bottles of local reds on the trolley courtesy of some currently serving and retired military vignerons! If you’d like to hear more about the gang at We Happy Few, follow this link to an ABC 666 Radio podcast: https://ab.co/3kALEDq We Happy Few Wines #ourvolunteersrock #community #palliativecare

18.01.2022 A positive perspective on the loss of a loved one.

This morning we had the pleasure of Canberra Centre retail manager Gary Stewart dropping over to The Hub and donating a mountain of goodies. 18.01.2022 Happy International Friends Day! Whether your friends are new or old, near or far, be sure to reach out and check in on your loved ones today and everyday.

17.01.2022 Every day at around 4.30pm wine glasses can be heard clinking at Clare Holland House (Canberra’s hospice) as Palliative Care ACT volunteers take the Wine Trolley to visit each room, offering a selection of wines to patients and visiting friends and families. The Wine Trolley is a service offered by Palliative Care ACT and is made up entirely of donations from various community groups, businesses and individuals. Our volunteers see it as more than just a wine trolley the ser...vice allows patients to enjoy a moment of normality, comfort and joy over a glass of wine with people special to them. Our team cannot thank the organisers of the National Wine Show of Australia enough for their continued support of the wonderful Wine Trolley. This was the latest donation of wines.....lot's of whites as they seem to be very popular at 'happy hour!'. Many of the donated wines won gold in their category at the show! Thanks to David and Derek from National Wine Show of Australia for the delivery!

17.01.2022 The last two weeks have been busier than usual for Palliative Care ACT. This week is National Palliative Care Week and last week was National Volunteer Week. Our celebrations for National Volunteer Week were a little different this year due to COVID-19 and social distancing. We held a virtual event with our volunteers and were privileged to have Her Excellency, Mrs Hurley attend our office. Mrs Hurley paid tribute to our volunteers and sung them a song she had written especially for the occasion. Government House, Canberra

15.01.2022 Palliative Care ACT held its Annual General Meeting at the Kamberra Function Centre yesterday. It was a very positive meeting with lots of good news and excitement as we look toward the future. 2020 has been a year like no other, and we have all felt the effects of the pandemic personally or through our families or networks. Despite this, PCACT has adapted to the many challenges faced, and the outlook is bright. Board President Louise Mayo AM addressed volunteers, staff and o...ther Board members to highlight the many achievements everyone at PCACT had worked so hard to reach over the past 12 months. Our volunteers and staff have provided a huge range of services to so many in residential aged care, people's homes, and Clare Holland House. Fundraising has been down due to COVID restrictions and other factors, and we would gratefully accept any help via financial donations or in-kind support. Any donation goes directly to service delivery, services and supports which are critical to so many in our own backyard. If you or your workplace/social club are in a position to help us help more people in Canberra, please contact us on 62555771 or follow this link to our donation page. https://www.pallcareact.org.au/donate-now/ Thank you Canberra! #canberra #community

14.01.2022 A BIG thank you to Jude, members of the Bungendore CWA and the local Bungendore community for their donation of knitted items. A very welcome addition during the Canberra winter

14.01.2022 New research from the University of British Columbia (UBC) suggests people who are unresponsive can hear, even hours before they die.

13.01.2022 Did we mention how generous the Canberra community can be? Here's a perfect example. Our CEO met the CEO of St John Ambulance ACT at a Canberra Business Chamber breakfast a few days ago and heard about our soon to be opened non-clinical respite facility The Hub. A couple of days later we were hand delivered first-aid kits free of charge. We hope we'll never need them, but how nice is to know we're prepared. Thanks to all at St. John for the critical work you do in the commu...nity, and thank you for the donation! #communityspirit #community (Pictured below: PCACT and St. John representatives at the handover)

13.01.2022 A new report released last week has called for an overhaul of the palliative care system in Australia, calling for an additional annual investment of $365 million to bring the system up to speed in a post COVID-19 world. The report is also calling for a national agreement on palliative care between the Commonwealth and the states and territories, and a new full-time Palliative Care Commissioner, to help create the best experience possible for those with life-limiting conditio...ns and those around them. All Australians who need palliative care are simply not having access to services when they need to, particularly at home and in community settings. As we prepare for an ageing population and other unexpected stresses to our health care system, like COVID-19, we must look seriously at reforming our system to ensure it can meet people’s needs into the future, Palliative Care Australia Chair Professor Meera Agar said.

11.01.2022 What a great community! Our friends at GIVIT and IKEA heard we needed towels and other bathroom items for our non-clinical respite facility which is opening soon. Yesterday bags of brand new high quality facecloths, towels and bath sheets were donated to PCACT. Thank you Caroline, Kristi and Darrell for this generous support. #community #communityspirit #ikea IKEA

10.01.2022 Palliative Care..... It's more than you think!!! Palliative Care Australia’s annual art competition is back again in 2020. This competition aims to raise awareness in the community about palliative care, end-of-life care, death and bereavement. This year’s theme 'Palliative care... It’s more than you think!' aims to challenge common misconceptions about palliative care. Artist are encouraged to think beyond the care provided at the very end of life, and instead focus on how ...palliative care can improve quality of life, helping people participate in activities that are important to them, and creating opportunities for love, laughter, creativity, and fulfilment.
