25.01.2022 Reid lane water leak finally fixed ! The water crew and other staff report that the leak at Reid lane has finally been repaired. The words they expressed about what a tricky sneaky little job where everything that could go wrong did really cant be printed ! ... Sometimes Fridays just go like that ! Seriously, once under the surface and working underwater there were a multitude of compounding problems that had to be addressed before the break could be repaired If the water is a little discoloured please run the tap for 5 mins. Thanks to the guys for sticking with it well into the night to get this sorted. We hope thats the end of the issue under the surface at Reid lane and again apologise for the disruption to our residents. Adele Young CEO

18.01.2022 Reminder. No more than 30 at a private house or private event at one time Big fines exist otherwise. Be Covid safe
16.01.2022 Change in restrictions for private gatherings. Limited to thirty for private gatherings. Other places, such as businesses, government services, schools, universities etc are NOT subject to the thirty limit as they have COVID-management plans in place.... To find out all the details of how to be compliant. Go straight to the source. Below is the link. Below is the link to all directions and information re restrictions, directions and exemptions. https://www.health.qld.gov.au//cho-public-health-direction
16.01.2022 BREACHES OF COVID GATHERING RULES AT HOME RISKS $13,300 FINE NO MORE THAN 30 PEOPLE IN PRIVATE PLACES The Local Disaster Management Group reminds Palm Island residents that current COVID directions ban gatherings in private places - such as homes of more than 30 people.... From Monday morning Cherbourg Aboriginal Shire has had their limit reduced to 10 people as tighter restrictions have been extended as the current outbreak in Qld extends further. LDC Adele Young said Residents were advised last week via this site of the new - NO MORE than 30 RULE at private places - gatherings. It was also well publicised via the media. This means any house or private gathering which has more than 30 people together (including residents) commits and offence with a maximum fine of 6 months jail and / or a max fine of $13,300 (100 penalty units) Cherbourg has now been limited to 10 people max in private spaces and we are likely not far away from that either. It was clear from the weekend that some people on Palm ignored this new Health Direction with private parties well over 30 people. This health direction could see a new lower limit be extended to Palm Island to reduce the number to 10 if the outbreak isn't contained and people don't comply. No one wants to see fines issued - but breaches can't be tolerated - as the virus could arrive in our part of the world, before anyone even feels sick or gets tested. A lot of people can be infected before we even know the virus has arrived. Then it's simply too late. Our vulnerable residents may not survive. 30 people is the limit. If people ignore this new rule, it could see this reduced to 10 people, and fines issued. There is no excuse for a few individuals to risk the health and safety of many. The communication phase of this change is complete. Compliance is now the focus. Remember - exceed 30 people in one place and fines apply - up to $13,300 and 6 months jail. DO NOT PLAN PARTIES ABOVE 30 people.
16.01.2022 Mayor announces giveaway of tickets to the big fight on Wednesday night! Im delighted to announce the promoter of Patrick Clarkes fight Mr Matt Rose has generously purchased and donated 50 tickets for Palm Island residents to attend the fight ! Council has put on an extra ferry the Patrick Clarke Ferry on Wednesday leaving Palm at 2 pm to make sure all residents who want to go to the fight can get there !... In a further show of support for Palm Island to enjoy and support their local hero Patrick Clarke, 50 free tickets are available for locals to attend the fight at the stadium Wednesday night It really is a very generous donation from Matty Rose to help ensure that lack of funds doesnt stop anyone keen from attending. If you can attend the fight on Wednesday and havent got a ticket yet, get in early tomorrow (Tuesday) and see me at Council, said the Mayor. Itll be first in best dressed and be limited in numbers so that everyone has a fair go to get a free ticket. A big shout out and thanks to those backing Patrick Clarke and Palm Island, especially Matt. Oh and some other people are apparently fighting on the night too but we will all be there cheering for Patrick. Dont miss out on your chance for a free ticket. Come see me early Tuesday, Mayor Sam said. Thanks to Matt Rose events Mayor Sam Update from Disaster coordinator Remember the fight has a covid event approved plan and is proceeding. But if you are in a crowded area and cant socially distance the Chief Health Officer is now recommending Queenslanders wear a mask as a precaution, especially over the next two weeks during the incubation period of the current outbreak in a Brisbane. Adele Young LDMG

14.01.2022 Water team update - thanks for help Thank you from Councils water team to the community who have responded to help slow down water consumption, from past weeks record to use to a lower number closer to the daily summer average. While we are still using more than normal for this time of year, the water team report usage has dropped enough to allow night pumping to help catch up filling the reservoirs and to help catch up the additional time taken to produce water through the p...lant. With more hot weather coming next week and the weekend, residents are reminded to help save every drop and keep usage to household requirements. Please keep a tight reign on hoses and sprinklers making sure none are let run unattended or down gutters and streets. Thanks again for the positive response to our request for help on behalf of the water guys! PIASC

13.01.2022 Reminder community invitation from Sealink to check out the new ferry tomorrow Friday between 2.30 and 3.30 FROM SEALINK It’s no secret we are super proud of the newest member to our fleet, Coolgaree Cat! Departure from Townsville will be at 12.00noon and departure from Palm Island will be 4.30pm with the vessel open for viewing ...from 2.30pm 3.30pm. Here are some cool facts about Coolgaree Cat: 2 years in the making, Coolgaree Cat is the latest ferry built by the SeaLink Travel Group and sits at the forefront of passenger ferry design and performance and heralds an entirely new standard in passenger service delivery for the Palm Island community. She has been purpose built and designed to meet the challenging open water conditions of the Palm Island run with a cabin design and layout reflective of and responsive to the needs of our passengers. 11.01.2022 Project update on Solomon dam pipeline upgrade Further good news investing in our water network. The installation of a brand new pipe line from the Solomon Dam to the Water Treatment Plant is now over 50 % complete. And running on time.... The contractors are expecting to finish in the next few weeks and while it’s been a long time coming, it’s great to see this work smoothly rolling out. There are other major water infrastructure upgrades planned for early in the new year. Thanks to the Qld State Government for this funding and the contractor FB Contracting for working with Council to get this done before the rain season. Fun fact: our water technicians test our water supply every day of the year and submit weekly samples to a nationally accredited lab on the mainland. As a third step these results are further checked by Qld Health. This ensures we know exactly where we are at any given time and we remain complaint with the Australian guidelines for safe drinking water. Well done to our water guys for their ongoing efforts. Often we only focus on the water network when things go wrong. It’s important to know work is being prioritised to continue to upgrade the system now and into the future. We continue to focus on catching up the legacy issues we have been left with. While a lot has been done. There’s always more to do.
