20.01.2022 Each tax time, there are always a few tax myths floating around. One of the most common? That everyone can automatically claim work-related expenses up to a cer...tain value. Read on as we set the record straight Myth: Everyone can claim $300 for work-related expenses, including $150 for work clothes or laundry, and 5,000km worth of car expenses. Fact: Not quite true! Theres no automatic entitlement in order to claim a work-related expense, you must have actually spent the money. And while some claims dont require up-front evidence, you must be able to demonstrate the expenses relate to earning your income and how you calculated the claims. If youre not sure what you can claim or how to calculate your deductions, read our info at www.ato.gov.au//Income-and-deduct/Deductions-you-can-claim or chat with a registered tax agent.

12.01.2022 Do you know your tax myths from tax facts? Test your working-from-home knowledge below as we set the record straight. Myth: If I use the shortcut method, I ...can claim 80 cents per work hour plus other equipment (that costs $300 or less) to use when working from home. Fact: Under the shortcut method you can only claim 80 cents per work hour. This method covers all deductible expenses, including office furniture and technology. You can’t claim any other working from home expenses on top. Myth: I can claim everything I bought to work from home (new laptop, desk, toilet paper, tea or coffee and my kids’ education supplies). Fact: There are three methods you can use to calculate your working from home expenses. You can choose the method that will give you the best outcome but you must meet the eligibility and record keeping requirements. You cannot claim items such as toilet paper, tea, coffee or your kids’ education costs, these are private expenses. Myth: I can’t claim my working from home running expenses, even though I share the costs with my housemate because the bills aren’t in my name. Fact: Under the shortcut method multiple eligible taxpayers working from the same home can each claim 80 cents per work hour, even if the utility bill isn’t in your name. 09.01.2022 A recent incident in which a would-be scammer claimed to work for the SA Police has prompted a fresh warning to the community to not be taken in by such tactics.... The caller claimed to be a police officer, and told their intended victim that there was an outstanding warrant in their name in relation to a tax debt. They were asked to pay their tax bill using gift cards, but were spoken to by a shop assistant who raised the possibility the caller was a fraudster, prompting them to visit a police station. Of concern was the fact the telephone number displayed was that of a South Australian police station, however the call was not being made from that location. Unfortunately modifying the caller ID is a simple technique which can be used by scammers as a way to build credibility by making a call or SMS appear to come from a reputable agency. In the recent case, the intended victim visited the police station only to discover there was no person of the name they were given working there. Nor do SA Police make calls on behalf of the tax department, or ask for payments in gift cards. While only one report has been received in relation to the exploitation of this particular phone number, police are aware this type of practice is used by many would-be scammers to create a false impression about where a call is being made from. Irrespective of the phone number displayed, or who an unsolicited caller claims to work for, it is important to take independent steps to verify a callers identity before providing any personal information or making payments of any sort. Scammers often contact people by phone or on the internet making it important to remember these tips to protect yourself: Hang up when someone you don't know calls Immediately delete emails from people you don't know, and from agencies or businesses that you didnt agree to receive emails from do not click on links in those emails Never send money online to someone you haven't met in person If in doubt contact the government agency from a phone number or website that you have located and were not directed to Remember the ATO will not request payment of a debt via iTunes, Google Play cards or Bitcoins Never give your personal, credit card or online account details over the phone unless you made the call and the phone number came from a trusted source If you think you have provided your bank account details to a scammer, contact your bank or financial institution immediately Never give an unsolicited person remote access to your computer. You may compromise the security of your device and your personal information Ensure your computer is protected with regularly updated anti-virus and anti-spyware software Please share this information - and discuss the prevalence of these type of scams with people in your circle who may be less savvy about this type of technology or scam activity. 09.01.2022 We recently investigated a taxpayer who claimed $3,800 for transporting bulky tools to and from work.
