25.01.2022 I realised, with some surprise, that this is a bit of a year of anniversaries for me. The building that houses Paradise Bookshop was built in 1866 and is celebrating its 150th birthday this year. Happy birthday building. In 1981, I established my first bookshop (Grub Street Bookshop in Brunswick Street, Fitzroy) which is celebrating its 35th birthday this year. Happy birthday Grub Street. In 1986, I established Alice’s Bookshop (in Rathdowne Street, North Carlton) which is ce...lebrating its 30th birthday this year. The current owners held a party and invited me along, which was nice of them. Unfortunately I couldn’t make it, but I thought that it was a nice gesture. In 1992, I established The Avant Garden Bookshop in Vincent Street, Daylesford which is celebrating its 24th birthday this year. If only I’d done it a year earlier, it would have been the 25th anniversary, which would have been much neater! I changed the name of The Avant Garden Bookshop to Paradise Bookshop some years ago. Puns are a bit like fish. They are best when fresh and after a while they can get a bit on the nose. And in 2001, I established Paradise Bookshop in Apollo Bay. It’s celebrating its 15th birthday this year. Hip hip hooray. Now to blow out the candles on the cakes and make a wish. See more
23.01.2022 And the word of the day is tsundoku, which is Japanese for a pile of books waiting to be read. If we had no tsundoku in our lives the world would be a bleak and cheerless place.
13.01.2022 So, yesterday was Father’s Day. For me, Father’s Day this year was very different to previous years. My kids are teenagers now, so I didn’t receive any hand-drawn cards or weird and wonderful picture frames made of pasta and glitter. None of that this year. My daughter was out of the house early for a netball semi-final and my son was in his room chilling out and psyching himself up for the inevitable homework. But this Father’s Day was different for another reason. On Fri...day I went to the funeral of a friend. A good man. A decent man. A kind, loving, caring man who was the father of two fine young boys. He was a good father, and my heart goes out to those boys and to their wonderful, wonderful mother. Parenting doesn’t stop when the child turns 18 or when they turn 21 or when they leave home. Or when a father dies. The memories, the lessons and the values all stay with the child and so the father lives on.
08.01.2022 Book readers live an average of two years longer than those who do not read at all with just half an hour a day lengthening life. The study, conducted over a period of 12 years, did not explain why reading books is linked to an extended lifespan. The researchers from Yale University used data on 3,635 people who were aged 50 or over. Reading newspapers, magazines and periodicals was also associated with longer lifespan, but the link was not as strong, they added.
