23.01.2022 Have added some plants to our list today that are ready: Pycnosorus globosus (Billy Buttons) and Poa sierberiana (snow grass).

23.01.2022 Wattles often unfairly get the blame for spring allergies. The truth is the pollen is too heavy to fall far from the tree. This article explains what it’s more likely to be. https://www.abc.net.au//2015/dont-blame-the-wattle/6791396

23.01.2022 *Parker makes himself comfortable in a friend’s garden bed* Me: Parker, what are you doing! Get out of there. Parker: But deez aren’t natives. I squish dem for you.

23.01.2022 For the daisy lovers and those who might have missed out last time - more rhodanthe ( active chamomile) and Olearia phlogopappa (alpine dusty daisy bush) available. Pick up Weston. $6ea.

23.01.2022 Given it’s profuse flowers, I have had a lot of people ask me what this one is. It’s a hibbertia empetrifolia. It’s a bit of a climber/shrub and likes cover from hot sun and wind. I have two - this one on south side of house under the eaves in a pot and another newer one in an east facing garden bed under a small eucalyptus. There’s also an amazing specimen near the bus stop at the ANBG. Last spring some fairy wrens built a little nest inside it. I don’t have any to sell atm as I have found I can only propagate it in the hottest part of summer #weird #whoknowswhy #fussy

22.01.2022 Parker has finished setting up for the sale today we are ready to go!

20.01.2022 Thankfully, Acaena novae-zelandiae has some common names that are easier to pronounce- red bidibid, bidgee widgee, buzzy and piri-piri bur. It is a small herbaceous, prostrate perennial, native to New Zealand, Australia and New Guinea. Not to be confused with Sheep’s Burr which is considered a pastoral land weed. This fast growing lush groundcover will grow in sunny or part shade sites and adapts to most soils. A bush tucker food, it is said that the young succulent tips can be brewed to make tea. $6ea in 70mm square pots. Pick up Weston.

04.01.2022 Introducing Olearia Phlogoppapa - an underrated 1-1.5mH Australian native that should be seen more as it produces a fabulous display of flowers in spring and is an attractive garden shrub the rest of the year. It is particularly suited to the Canberra environment and is a tried and true addition to the Canberra gardener’s collection, lasting 30+ years with annual pruning. In particular they make excellent hedges, and also make good windbreaks. Also good as a feature shrub if no room for a hedge due to spectacular flowering season. Attract bees and butterflies to your garden this spring, summer and autumn with an olearia phlogopappa - currently available at $6ea (image credit: Olearia, gardensonline.com.au)

03.01.2022 Prostanthera, commonly known as mintbush or mint bush, is a genus of about 100 species of flowering plants of the Lamiaceae, all of which are endemic to Australia. Prostanthera are usually shrubs, rarely trees with blue to purple or white flowers. Most prefer full to part shade and I’ve found they do well under wattles and eucalypts. There are a few kinds that will be fine in full sun also, like Poorinda Ballerina in the photo below. And they all smell oh so minty fresh!

02.01.2022 Saturday smiles
