23.01.2022 Congratulations to the Parramatta and District Historical Society and in particular to our award winning gardening team - Jean, Bruce, Margaret, Jacqui, who won the Best Garden in the Non-Residential Section of the City of Parramatta Garden Awards. The award, presented by Councillor Prociv, was well received by the large audience of over 80 city residents who gave an extremely loud and robust applause following the announcement of the Society's winning entry. The Awards were... held in the grounds of Hambledon Cottage, under welcoming spring sunshine which helped display the garden in all its glory. Well done the gardening team, a great outcome for all your efforts over the past twelve months. Also a big appreciation to all those members assisting behind the scenes who provided a delicious morning tea and helped set up the chairs, tables, audio equipment and made our visitors and guests feel welcome on their arrival to the Awards ceremony.
17.01.2022 Parramatta and District Historical Society has always been a strong advocate to the Council and its Community to recognise and celebrate Parramatta's Foundation Day. This date, 2 November commemorates the day in 1788 that Governor Arthur Phillip declared the establishment of the colonies second township- Rosehill, later renamed Parramatta. Over the past 12 months Council working with the local heritage group, Parramatta Heritage Partners, created a comprehensive program that... covered four days of special activities for "Foundation Week" The two main days being Saturday and Sunday. The Society undertook to host the Council's Local Garden Competition on the Saturday morning to be followed by the official launch of Judith Dunn's new book - Then and There Lying Dead. On Sunday we conducted walks along the Parramatta Heritage Trail, linking the Town Hall to the Female Factory Precinct. We provided 3 speakers for their Public Talks Program and operated a rare book stall for the public to acquire a number of important reference books associated with the history of Parramatta. All events proved to be highly successful and greatly contributed to the success and hopefully repeat of Foundation Day Celebrations in the future. Congratulations and thanks to the many Society members who contributed to the success. We think that next year we might need even more members to contribute. A great weekend for the Society and Parramatta.

12.01.2022 HAMBLEDON COTTAGE is unable to be viewed through a guided tour due to the social distancing needs to control the COVID-19 virus attack. A visit to the Society WEb site will give you the opportunity to see various activities in past year. The GUIDES are keen to take you on a guided tour of the eight rooms and heritage garden as soon as government health official permit. You will be able to collect your recipe of colonial cooking in the Kitchen, hear the delightful piano music of Beethoven in the Withdrawing room, explore the life stories of the ladies of the Female Factory on display in the Lucas Gallery - the long room of the cottage.
12.01.2022 On Sunday 22 September the guides from Hambledon Cottage gathered for a special appreciation afternoon tea. The weather was very kind to us and the garden was displaying the early signs of its spring colours. President, Jeff Allen, presented service certificates to deserving members and a special presentation was made to Betty Laing for her long service to the Society, Hambledon Cottage and for establishing what has become a highly successful and valued school's education p...rogram. A most informative display and presentation of the school's current education program and the resources that have been acquired to support the program was provided by Ken Smith and Jacqui White. The unveiling of our most recent acquisition, a mid-Victorian tapestry, pole, fire screen, donated by long standing member Pam Ralph, was the highlight of the afternoon and all agreed that the screen will make an excellent addition to the Cottage furniture collection. A big thanks to Margaret and Tim O'Hearn for organising the afternoon tea along with the support of a number of members who supplied the goodies. Thanks again to all the guides who give of their time and knowledge to make Hambledon Cottage a major heritage destination for those who visit our great city, Parramatta.
11.01.2022 In response to the emerging developments with the COVID-19 virus, the Parramatta & District Historical Society has decided to postpone all our public events and to close Hambledon Cottage house museum, beginning March 18 until end April, when the matter will be re-assessed.
02.01.2022 On 23 and 30 September around 70 Society and National Trust members completed our final tour for this year - Prospect: Lawson, Water and Legends. The itinerary was very well received by all who attended and included visits to The Prospect Heritage Trust Cottage, Prospect Reservoir, Pump and Valve House, Site of Veteran Hall, Royal Crickets Arms Inn, Skyline Drive-In Blacktown, St Bartholomew's Church Prospect, The Turret Reserve Blacktown and the former site of Fox Under the Hill Hotel Prospect. Our guides, Les Tod, Brian Powyer and Cheryl Bates provided a full commentary at all the sites and revealed a very rich and fascinating history of this important area.
