19.01.2022 Hello Paddlers, In light of recent government announcements, the Board would like to give you an update of where we are as an association with respect to our cu...rrent training and competition options. First of all, I continue to be amazed and immensely proud of how the community have embraced the challenges of these difficult times and the changes the environment. You have been incredibly responsive and compliant and the association has continued to run in spite of the disruptions. We had a strong start to the year during January to February, however this was followed by coming to a complete standstill during March, as the Level 3 restrictions came into play in Australia when we entered full lock down immediately. As restrictions start to ease we now prepare for training and competition to return to relatively normal levels again, and we are ready to take the steps needed when this happens. I have been in consultation with Sports Australia and other sporting bodies this past week to ensure a consistent approach is applied across sporting disciplines. Sports Australia have said that each sport is to develop their own guidelines and policy's around returning to training and competition which then aligns to the respective State government directives, which are set to vary. Whilst we will come out with a national guideline, I urge you all to be absolutely familiar with the messages of our respective State Governments and Zones around the current levels of restrictions and what is allowed and what is not. These are changing reasonably quickly now and things differ from state to state. There will be a final meeting this Thursday with other Paddle Sporting bodies, so by the end of the week, we will communicate new recommendations that align with the newly announced government timelines, which could see us transitioning back to normal training very soon (with restrictions). Competition will remain on hold until further notice (except virtually for OC1). If you are like me then I'm sure you are well and truly over staying in your bubble but it is the very thing that will keep us safe and more importantly not put others at risk through our actions. We will continue to update you as more information comes to hand. Please reach out to your Zone Committee if you have any questions or concerns. In the meantime please stay safe and if you have even mild covid like symptoms then please get tested. Stay safe, Katherine Cole President AOCRA

17.01.2022 Dear Members, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Clubs, the Zone Committees and the Qld State Centre for their efforts over the last 4 months in... these unprecedented times. It has been a difficult period for everyone and together, along with the whole country, we have worked to get through various levels of this pandemic. Parts of the country are now back in full lockdown, others have closed their borders again in an effort to contain the spread. It is important to understand what is possible in terms of practicing, participating, or competing in your state or community. We ask you to continue to listen to the advice given by your Zone and AOCRA, with the understanding conditions can change rapidly. First and foremost, our goal is to keep everyone safe by providing practical risk management policies and ensure Clubs and Members abide by the directives imposed by authorities at all levels. We commend the Clubs posting regular updates to their members responding to local outbreaks and making the necessary changes to their training or competitive activity. We understand everyone is keen to get back to competition, and in South Qld Zone, we saw the first modified event take place last weekend, creating a viable model for all zones to adopt when they are ready to return to events. AOCRA are also assessing the viability of upcoming events such as the National AGM, the OC1/OC2 Nationals, Sydney Harbour Challenge and National Sprint Titles. We are currently working with local councils conducting economic modelling around the various participation level scenarios. The challenge is we have no idea what the COVID-19 situation will be like in a weeks time, let alone 3- 6 months, but we are optimistic the situation will improve if everyone does the right thing. This community is resilient and passionate, but some are doing it tough. Please take extra care of your loved ones and your paddling community at this time Katherine Cole AOCRA President

15.01.2022 - ANNOUNCEMENT- The AOCRA Board of Directors regretfully announces the resignation of Board Member Nathan Piacentini, effective Thursday 11th June. Regretful...ly, since COVID-19, Nathan's work commitments have increased significantly, which has limited his capacity to contribute to the sport in the way he had hoped. The AOCRA Board of Directors thank Nathan for his contributions since October 2019 and wish him well in the sport. It is also with a mix of sadness and gratitude that the Board announce the resignation of Kathy Barsby as Junior Development President, effective Sunday 12th July. Due to increased family commitments, Kathy, with the support of the AOCRA Board, felt it was time to step aside and hand over the reins to someone who could commit to working on the development of the Junior Strategic Plan within AOCRA. Kathy has been a part of the National JD committee for the past 8 years and has contributed significantly to the sport during her time. Kathy will remain on the Board as a General Director until the AGM in October when her term is complete. With Kathy's resignation, the Board was presented with the opportunity to invite another Junior Development Committee member to fill the vacancy. The Board are pleased to announce the appointment of Jenny Birthwistle to the position of Interim Junior Development President. Jenny has shown much enthusiasm and a cool logical head for decision making in the interest of Juniors, and has been working very closely with Kathy over the past year. Jenny is currently part of the AOCRA Junior Development team and is leading the way in Junior Development Strategies within AOCRA SQ Zone, therefore was the strong candidate for the role. Kathy will work to support Jenny in the transition process and be available to assist her where required. If you have any further questions please don’t hesitate to contact me. Katherine Cole President, AOCRA

11.01.2022 Not quite what we had in mind but we are in the process of creating a COVID plan for when it is safe to return to team training

08.01.2022 Dear Members, This memo is to advise that the Australian Outrigger Canoe Association (AOCRA) have made the difficult decision to postpone the 2021 Sydney Harbou...r Challenge to 2022 due to the ongoing effects of COVID-19. Due to the current situation facing the world and the ongoing level of uncertainty around international and interstate travel, AOCRA have made the decision to postpone in order to ensure the continued safety of our community. AOCRA understands that all member and international communities have been hit hard by COVID and this is another blow in what has been a very difficult year. It is, however, our priority to look after the health, safety and wellbeing of our membership to the best of our ability and to ensure that AOCRA events are not only viable, but can be attended by all who wish to attend. We thank our major sponsors for their ongoing support to date in organising this event and look forward to working closely together, along with AOCRA NSW to ensure 2022 is bigger and better than ever. Yours sincerely, Katherine Cole President AOCRA

08.01.2022 On on our journey to becoming better paddlers and being more competitive, we have focussed recently on getting our language right for our stroke so we are all u...nited in terms of language, coaching phrases and consistency. There are many ways to describe a stroke but we needed one voice not a thousand experts with their own versions confusing especially newer and novice paddlers and constantly changing every time you get in a canoe. The first of two graphics highlight the 6 stroke phases which we encourage everyone in the club to learn, know by rote and be able to pass on to newer paddlers when they join the club or demonstrate to come and try paddlers. The second graphic highlights a Power stroke analysis done in 2008. It measured a number of paddlers to determine the stroke power curve averages shown. We have integrated our club Stroke language into it to show the power in each phase. In particular note that in general, an experienced male paddler applies almost twice the power of an experienced female paddler but that an experienced female paddler has a similar power peak to a novice male paddler. Also note the power curve remains the same for all but accentuates the second wave for experienced male and female paddlers and that the experienced paddlers also have a slight power increase at around the stroke exit. 07.01.2022 We have some club members looking for OC1’s if anyone has one for sale please private message the club.

05.01.2022 Dear Members, Last week I promised to provide you an update regarding the roadmap for the relaxation of restrictions imposed on our sport. AOCRA has been provi...ded with the following Guidelines from Paddle Australia which distils all the information provided by authorities and give’s practical general advice as to how your Club can comply with its responsibilities as sport resumes over the coming months. A staged approach will be taken when it comes to returning to all sporting activities, taking into account factors such as the local presence of COVID-19; and various risk mitigation strategies. Any resumption of paddling activities must be within the context of social distancing and the overarching aim of minimising the risk of the transmissions of COVID-19. Clubs are requested to take a common-sense approach in applying these Guidelines Appendix A; https://paddle.org.au//upl/2020/05/Update-6-Appendix-A.pdf Clubs are requested to follow the governments 3-Step Plan- Appendix B https://paddle.org.au//upl/2020/05/Update-6-Appendix-B.pdf The red line symbolising the position at the date this guidance is provided. In addition to the above advice, all Clubs are asked to keep themselves continually updated regarding their own State Government announcements, guidelines and requirements. If a Club sees that something may be permissible according to a strict reading of the Guidelines yet recognises that undertaking the activity cannot practically happen without breaching the intentions of social distancing of 1.5m, it should not proceed with that activity. Similarly, exceptions to social distancing should also be considered. For example, while paddling in a two-man canoe may not be allowed, social distancing is not required for members of the same family who are already in contact. The Guidelines at Appendix A require Clubs to undertake a Risk Management and Mitigation Process prior to re-commencing Club Operations. AOCRA is working to create a simplified version and Clubs will be required to complete all sections of the Clubs Checklist before recommencing full operations. A gentle reminder also the AOCRA insurance policy does not cover COVID-19. Our priority remains the health of our paddling community and minimising the risk. We will continue to liaise with the relevant authorities to keep you updated on next steps. Keep healthy and stay safe. Yours in paddling, Katherine Cole President, AOCRA

04.01.2022 - INSURANCE UPDATE - We’ve had many enquires regarding insurance during the COVID-19 period and post COVID-19 period in relation to the Return to Sport Plan. ...We can confirm that AOCRA Insurance policies are still current and active. There are no exclusions under the current policies if a COVID plan is not produced. Whilst there is not an exclusion on the Public Liability Insurance policy relating to COVID-19 directly, AOCRA and its members have a duty to exercise reasonable precautions to prevent personal injury and property damage and to comply with all statutory obligations, by-laws or regulations imposed by any public authority in respect of the safety of persons or property. If Clubs do not comply with State Government regulations, for example by ignoring social distancing or self-isolation requirements then insurers may deny a claim on the argument that you breached this duty of care. We would highly recommend members take every effort to follow all governmental guidelines enacted in accordance with the COVID-19 pandemic. Please be reminded that the Personal Accident insurance does not cover any type of illness, such as that which may arise from infection with COVID-19. If you have any queries about these changes please contact the insurer directly. Yours in paddling, Katherine Cole AOCRA President

04.01.2022 The most recent COVID-19 rules have lifted the group number to up to 10 and all other guidelines remain the same. Stay safe everyone!

02.01.2022 Vesna’s Paddling Tip : Functional Quick Legs Here is a functional movement called ‘Quick Legs’ which requires you to generate as much power in your legs as quic...k and functionally as you can. It is important when you do this movement that all your other muscles such in your legs, shoulders, abdominals, heads are functionally aligned to ensure it is effective. If we compensate or let these muscles go throughout the ‘Quick Legs’, you risk injury and less power of the legs. Here is a quick video explaining the Quick Legs. Great if you can practice these functional movements on the land, before trying them on the water. This enables you to your muscles to adapt and adjust to the new movement.
