25.01.2022 How much does talent matter? My friend Jonathan Finch once talked to me about giftedness, and how they view this in their #highperformance culture at the ECB. Talent is helpful, but it is not the indicator of results. Far from it.... What do you look for in your people that is more important than talent? #leadership #team #therhythmeffect

25.01.2022 A client of mine said that our work together didnt remove his friction points, but it helped his capability to work through them. Having agency over the hurley-burley of our work challenges creates a powerful belief and #confidence. This creates...... self-efficacy, which raises our... resilience, and ability to... achieve without harm I find this exciting and is a pathway to healthy, enjoyable, and fruitful work experiences. In The Rhythm Effect, I explore this in detail and discuss how it relates to #motivation, the marketplace, and change management.

25.01.2022 Recently, Nick Kyrgios turned down an invitation to play in the US Open Tennis Championship. His words describing why are ones of a leader. In these words, I see Nicks natural tendency for #audacity mix beautifully with the intention of #humility. From this, others are #inspired to be courageous:... "I too will sit out so others do not suffer" "I too will speak up about my actions" "I too will make difficult decisions for the betterment of others" This is what #courage looks like. #therhythmeffect

23.01.2022 Motivation can be affected by all sorts of factors. Being in a team turns out to be one of them! #therhythmeffect #motivation #leadership

23.01.2022 Acceptance of the things that didnt go so well helps us remain in the moment. Getting bogged down in the constant stream of things that went wrong is crippling to performance. Its not about being positive to me. It is more about accepting the current state of play and knowing that all of what has happened has moved us forward.... #belief #momentum #leadership #therhythmeffect

22.01.2022 Team Up - the newly released book from Keegan unpacks team work. Full of exercises and practical ways to build a teaming strategy. If you haven’t got on to it yet, do yourself a favour! #teamwork #teamup #teaming

21.01.2022 How important is #Commitment? If you are leading a team that is not all in, what does that mean for your outcomes? #therhythmeffect

21.01.2022 Putting in the hard yards to survive is what we need to do... sometimes. But, valiantly doing this all the time is, in fact, causing problems of its own. In The Rhythm Effect I explore this in detail and discuss:... Why we fall into this trap Alternatives Ways to instil this in others

20.01.2022 " This book will make you a more relaxed, fluid, and effective leader." @zoe routh #therhythmeffect

20.01.2022 Not where you want to be? Not further down the track than what you hoped? Not as comfortable or secure as you would like?... Its understandable, but never underestimate the value of remaining in the game. Just by hanging in there anything is possible and a lot of progress can be made. #tenacity #selfmanagement #therhythmeffect

18.01.2022 It's catching on - #humility is powerful. It is a foundational need to be a leader of progress. But I still feel that many of us misunderstand what 'humility looks like'. And we find it even harder to practice humility in the heat-of-the-moment. John C Maxwell's quote is so simple yet there is such depth in this. It speaks to the idea of...... focusing on the impact of others instead of the impact on 'me' when in a discussion. to think of others needs before your own is not to diminish one's position, status, or respect. a leaders role of showing others how to practice humility. To allow others to feel the power, respect, and trust towards someone that is humble to their core. Humility is not passive. It is not sub-servant. It is not weak. Humility is powerful. It is inspirational. It is a gateway to rhythm. #leadership #trust

17.01.2022 "Paul has been able to articulate an approach to work better, not harder in a compelling and inspiring way." - David Chadwick #therhythmeffect

15.01.2022 Its coming to the end of the year. Are you going to hit your target? It's a terrible question. A little 'yay' or a little 'boo' probably popped into your mind. For those 'yaying' it probably feels a little hollow (because next year's targets are already upon us.) ... And, for the 'booers' out there, it just feels rubbish. Simon Sinek speaks of the infinite game, meaning we are playing a game with no end point. There are a few ways we can use this: The scoreboard can change very quickly. Stop obsessing over it. Excellent results are yesterday's news. Celebrate them but move on quickly. Poor results are yesterdays news. Take your learnings and move on quickly. Being number one is a mug's game. There is so much out of your control in this metric. Finding a big hairy goal that is independent of competitors or previous performance is so much more useful. Detachment from results is worth developing. Pride and enjoyment in achievements is our person right, but when we are attach happiness, self-worth, or professional status directly with results we set ourselves up for a flimsy and shaky situation. You are not your results. You are playing an infinite game. The opportunities and possibilities are endless. #leadership #motivation #resilience #therhythmeffect

15.01.2022 Initial data suggests #wfh results in longer days but not necessarily more time working. It is potentially a double hit for workers and leaders. With flexible working becoming standard practice, upskilling of staff and leaders to effectively navigate this environment is going to be essential. Some questions I find helpful are:... What principals will we operate by in our dispersed working environment? What new measures can we use to perform without suffering burnout? What daily habits can we all commit to for increased Return On Effort (ROE)? I would love to know how you are approaching this in your workplace. Comment or DM me. #culture #therhythmeffect

15.01.2022 "job titles make people do stupid things" Knowing when to shut up doesn't come naturally to me... It is something I have had to learn in my #leadership journey. In my facilitation and coaching work I now know the less I am speaking the better I am doing my job. A few key points I loved in this article... Being loud doesn't make you cleverer or more senior. As an old fantails wrapper once said, "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and to remove all do...ubt." Know when to shut up - listen for the unsaid. A skill of deep listening that separates pro's from amateurs. Listening accelerates learning. Learning accelerates careers/projects/results. Who would have thought!?! Elevate quietness. Praise it, learn from it. But, most importantly for me, acknowledge that being quiet is not the same as being passive. It is an active mode and is therefore valuable. More valuable than boosting your own ego by over-talking. A superbly written piece by Tim Denning #meetings #therhythmeffect

15.01.2022 I had the pleasure to chat with the irrepressible and vivacious @ReneeGiarrusso for the #LimitlessLeaders Podcast this week. We talked energy, teams, learning, unlearning... and of course, leadership in the modern workplace. I feel like we could have talked for hours! Thank you for that discussion and I can't wait to read your new book when it launches!!!... #therhythmeffect #Leadership

14.01.2022 Whenever I find it difficult to stand up to injustices, or I am scared to be curious and ask questions (or question people of authority) I think of this amazing person. Her words in this clip give us a small peek into how we can achieve world changing things with #audacity. Malalas story leaves us many clues. ... If she can influence, lead, and inspire, then all of us can too. The world needs us. #therhythmeffect

14.01.2022 "It gets easier... Everyday it gets easier. But, youve gotta do it everyday. Thats the hard part. But it does get easier" This was shared by a client of mine as we discussed the concept of #tenacity and how to build it into a strength. Definitely my quote of the week. ... #therhythmeffect

14.01.2022 Is there anything a group of people cannot achieve when they have the skills, are aligned, and synchronised? I feel we underestimate our potential as teams, and therefore under invest in areas that make a team sing. What would tying down your lion look like? What value does it have for you and your organisation?

12.01.2022 "The Rhythm Effect is like a mirror to our unconscious traits that gives courage to question why we look to optimise the performance of others before we find the rhythm in ourselves." - Sue Anderson

11.01.2022 Resistance is all around us. Inside of us. Steven Pressfield's insight into this in his book The War of Art tells us of the daily fight we all face in the pursuit of our craft and aspirations. I see this as friction points we have in front of us and those of which we put in front of ourselves every day - as individuals and collectives. The opportunity for leaders is significant:... Observe for friction points created by your own behaviour Observe for friction points created by the behaviour of your team Observe for friction points created by processes, workplace tools, and systems. I challenge you to spend 10 minutes this weekend with a paper and pen to reflect on the friction points you can think of in your workplace. I double-challenge you to implement 3x actions to in the coming week to significantly reduce friction in your team. This is a taste of what The Rhythm Effect looks like in real time. This is where we work hard to improve Return On Effort. Direct message me next weekend after completing your 3x actions. You will be rewarded. #therhythmeffect #leadership #team

07.01.2022 When I was in New Zealand earlier in the year we camped on the shores of Lake Taupo. As we walked we curiously saw all these green buckets hanging in the shrubs and trees. They were dotted around the freshwater lake for visitors to use to give the newly planted trees water during hot dry summers. It not only solved a problem but made us feel like a part of the community. Sometimes asking people to volunteer their efforts does not mean resentment or apathy will preside. Somet...imes it enhances #belonging, inclusion, and #cohesion. How can you solve a problem while enhancing belonging in your team? #therhythmeffect

07.01.2022 Is there anything a group of people cannot achieve when they have... - the skills, - are aligned, - are synchronised?... 05.01.2022 The Pygmalion effect shows us the power of #belief. No longer will positive self talk or encouragement seem aimless. In my experience, #consistency is what turns this technique into real results.... Excerpt from Margaret Heffernan

05.01.2022 Mastering Rhythm is the act of 'doing the work so you can do the work'. Being able to create and maintain a position of ease and calm takes an extraordinary amount of resource. It is a paradox. But the journey is clear...... Learn Stuff. Auditing for clarity around what to learn is the important bit. Practice Stuff. Experiment, try, iterate, hone, and keep doing over a period of time. Gain Autonomy in Stuff. Practice so that it becomes a part of you. No prompts or thinking is required. It just happens. Gain Mastery in Stuff. The doing is so easy it is boring. You can role model, teach, and do in your sleep. This process defecates on talent. I like to think Irvine would agree with me. It is a powerful process I have had success with in my mentoring, coaching, and training programs. Would you like to find out more about this? Comment RHYTHM below and I will send you the resources. #leadership #professionaldevelopment #therhythmeffect

04.01.2022 What are the practical things we can do to create a calm and relaxed work environment for ourselves and our team? If I had to give one answer to this it would be practise (or practice depending on where you are). We have a need and want for new. We constantly want to learn more, do different, and discover. These urges are great, but they rarely help us with calm.... Instead, if we just concentrate on practising the things we know to be of value to the point we are experts of them, then we will sync with our team mates and environments. Things will come easy. Or at least easier... I want this for your journey. Start today. Practise Practice Practise! #therhythmeffect #leadership #team
