23.01.2022 Monday Memo #21 Pterygiums If you don't wear sunnies, this is for you! A Pterygium (said "teh-RIH-jee-um") is a growth on the sclera (white part of the eye) that may cover the iris (the coloured part of the eye). It can cause the eye to be dry, irritated, red and can even cause blurry vision. But it CAN BE PREVENTED! Wearing a hat and proper sunglasses will give you protection from sunlight and wind which can cause this eye condition. If you've already got a pterygium, see yo...ur optometrist to manage discomfort and to monitor size and colour (you can also this this yourself!) **Proper sunglasses will be Category 3, polarised and have good coverage over your eyes. 22.01.2022 Monday Memo #8 Dry[EYE] July There are 3 main varieties of dry eye that commonly affect people daily. We can manage these in practice. Dry eyes fall under 3 main catergories:. Aqueous deficient - eyes fail to produce enough 'watery' tear components - feels gritty, sticky eyelids, stinging, sore, scratchy Meibomian gland dysfunction - glands don't produce enough oil so the tear film over the eye evaporates too quickly - feels stingy, burning, scratchy, rapid blinking... Blepharitis - inflammation of the eyelids - feels itchy, sandy, red eyelids Your environmental factors can often be a cause dry eye: the weather, age, screen time, contact lenses and medications. 12.01.2022 Monday Memo #7 Diabetic Eye Tests Last week was Diabetes Week - so we wanted to remind our diabetic patients to have annual eye examinations to check everything is ok! This is because your eyes have many blood vessels which can be affected by the changes in blood sugar caused by diabetes. Unmonitored, the blood vessels may leak causing diabetic retinopathy which, untreated may lead to vision loss The eye test is a comprehensive check of both your vision and your eye heal...th. It involves dilating drops which make your pupils really big so that the whole back of your eye can be checked. These often make you blurry for a while after the appointment but it is well worth it to make sure your vision is alright! 06.01.2022 Tips for wearing masks with specs! - Use an anti-fog spray or gel, which we can supply. - Clean your lenses with dishwashing soap and water, then buff with a microfibre cloth. - Put a folded tissue under the mask across the bridge of your nose. - Make sure your mask is sealed properly over your nose, often with the metal piece within the mask or with skin-safe tape.... - Order some Anti-Fog lenses from us in your prescription. - See if contact lenses are an option for you. We hope these tips make life with masks and glasses easier!
