25.01.2022 On March 16, AMT advised our 3000+ practising members to cease treatment to help stop the spread of COVID19. This advice spurred global action, with massage th...erapists around the world closing their doors to COVID19. AMT's position has remained clear, coherent and unwavering since March 16 - massage therapists cannot socially distance so the risk of becoming vectors for transmission of COVID19 is unacceptably high. We salute massage therapists around the world for their public health advocacy and front line role in helping to #flattenthecurve

20.01.2022 - The push-up is a multi-joint exercise that activates numerous muscles throughout the upper quarter and can effectively increase sho...ulder complex stability and strength. While push-ups are a staple in most resistance training programs, many people struggle to complete multiple repetitions of this movement. Here is an example progression that you could work through when looking to build your push-up strength. These exercises will increase in difficulty as you move down the list. Find the level that is best for you and aim for 3-5 sets of repetitions to fatigue. 1Hands Elevated 2Hands Elevated (Lower) 3Standard Push-Up 4Feet Elevated
19.01.2022 Imagine you were born in 1900. When you're 14, World War I begins and ends when you're 18 with 22 million dead. Soon after a global pandemic, the Spanish Flu, a...ppears, killing 50 million people. And you're alive and 20 years old. When you're 29 you survive the global economic crisis that started with the collapse of the New York Stock Exchange, causing inflation, unemployment and famine. When you're 33 years old the Nazis come to power. When you're 39, World War II begins and ends when you're 45 years old with 72 million dead. In the Holocaust 6 million Jews die. When you're 52, the Korean War begins. When you're 64, the Vietnam War begins and ends when you're 75. A child born in 1985 thinks his grandparents have no idea how difficult life is, but they have survived several wars and catastrophes. Today we have all the comforts in a new world, amid a new pandemic. But we complain because we need to wear masks. We complain because we must stay confined to our homes where we have food, electricity, running water, wifi, even Netflix! None of that existed back in the day. But humanity survived those circumstances and never lost their joy of living. A small change in our perspective can generate miracles. We should be thankful that we are alive. We should do everything we need to do to protect and help each other. This message should reach everyone. Please help me spread it. (Author unknown)
18.01.2022 I don't know who wrote this, but it's probably the most powerful words the world could ever hear! We fell asleep in one world, and woke up in another. Suddenly ...Disney is out of magic, Paris is no longer romantic, New York doesn't stand up anymore, the Chinese wall is no longer a fortress, and Mecca is empty. Hugs & kisses suddenly become weapons, and not visiting parents & friends becomes an act of love. Suddenly you realise that power, beauty & money are worthless, and can't get you the oxygen you're fighting for. The world continues its life and it is beautiful. It only puts humans in cages. I think it's sending us a message: "You are not necessary. The air, earth, water and sky without you are fine. When you come back, remember that you are my guests. Not my masters."
18.01.2022 CERVICAL REGIONS AND TRIANGLES OF THE NECK The skin of the neck is thin and pliable. The subcutaneous tissue contains the platysma, a thin sheet of striated ...muscle that ascends to the face. Its fibers can be observed, especially in thin people, by asking them to contract the platysma muscles (e.g., by pretending to ease a tight collar). The SCM is the key muscular landmark of the neck. It defines the sternocleidomastoid region and divides the neck into anterior and lateral cervical regions. This broad bulging muscle is easy to observe and palpate throughout its length as it passes superolaterally from the sternum and clavicle. Its superior attachment to the mastoid process is palpable posterior to the lobule of the auricle. The SCM can be made to stand out by asking the person to rotate the face toward the contralateral side and elevate the chin. In this contracted state, the anterior and posterior borders of the muscle are clearly defined. The jugular notch of the manubrium forms the inferior boundary of the fossa between the sternal heads of the SCMs. The suprasternal space and jugular venous arch are located superior to this notch. The lesser supraclavicular fossa, between the sternal and the clavicular heads of the SCM, overlies the inferior end of the IJV. The EJV runs vertically across the SCM toward the angle of the mandible. It may be prominent, especially if distended by asking the person to take a deep breath and hold it, expiring against resistance (Valsalva maneuver) or by using gentle pressure on the inferior part of the vein. These actions impede venous return to the right side of the heart. The EJV is less obvious in children and middle-aged women because their subcutaneous tissues tend to be thicker than those in men. The great auricular nerve parallels the EJV, approximately a fingers breadth posterior to the vein. Deep to the superior half of the SCM is the cervical plexus, and deep to the inferior half of the SCM are the IJV, common carotid artery, and vagus nerve in the carotid sheath. The trapezius, which defines the posterior cervical region, can be observed and palpated by asking the person to shrug the shoulders against resistance. Superiorly, inferior to its attachment to the external occipital protuberance, the muscle overlies the suboccipital region. The inferior belly of the omohyoid muscle can just barely be seen and palpated as it passes superomedially across the inferior part of the lateral cervical region. Easiest to observe in thin people, the omohyoid muscle can often be seen contracting when they are speaking. Just inferior to the inferior belly of the omohyoid is the greater supraclavicular fossa, the depression overlying the omoclavicular triangle. The third part of the subclavian artery passes through this triangle before coursing posterior to the clavicle and across the 1st rib. The greater supraclavicular fossa is clinically important because subclavian arterial pulsations can be palpated here in most people. The course of the subclavian artery in the neck is represented by a curved line from the sternoclavicular (SC) joint to the midpoint of the clavicle. To feel subclavian pulsations, press inferoposteriorly (down and back) immediately posterior to the junction of the medial and middle thirds of the clavicle. This is the pressure point for the subclavian artery; firmer pressure, compressing the artery against the 1st rib, can occlude the artery when hemorrhage is occurring distally in the upper limb. The chief contents of the larger occipital triangle, superior to the omohyoid muscle, are the spinal accessory nerve (CN XI); cutaneous branches of cervical nerves C2, C3, and C4; and cervical lymph nodes. Because of the vulnerability and frequency of iatrogenic injury of the spinal accessory nerve, it is important to be able to estimate the location of CN XI in the lateral cervical region. Its course can be approximated by a line that intersects the junction of the superior and middle thirds of the posterior border of the SCM and the junction of the middle and lower thirds of the anterior border of the trapezius. The cervical viscera and carotid arteries and their branches are approached surgically through the anterior cervical region, between the anterior border of the SCM and the midline. Of the four smaller triangles into which this region is subdivided, the submandibular and carotid triangles are especially important clinically.

13.01.2022 There is so much fear from the massage industry at this moment that our tables are going to be empty forever. That it will take two years before its safe to pr...actice again. The world is ending and it will never be the same. When I read a lot of these messages Im struck; I want to be the voice of empowerment and silver linings, but there seems to be this massive wall of impossibility in flipping the switch in others hearts from fear, recession, defense, and worry to hope, optimism, excitement and embodiment. In this process, I too am grieving for the loss of being able to help others, my financial security, and the dreams I have been so hard at work building that seem all but taken away. Still, Im extremely hopeful. I feel appreciation for these monumental moments of worldwide PAUSE. Im even excited about how the world may change. In my lifetime, nothing like this has ever happened. If there was any monotony in life before this, its all been shaken up and changed. There are new challenges to overcome and I believe with that will come new opportunities for those who are willing to rise and meet them. I am saddened that the consensus from the massage and bodywork comments I see online seems to be saying, well, it was a good run, but lets close up shop and pursue safer and more secure career choices until it seems like we can go back. Im not sure that there will be a going back, but I also dont see the way forward as filled with impending doom. Like always, life finds a way. New growth rises from the ashes. Do I know what it will look like yet? Not at all. But Im excited to rise and meet that new day with the fullness of everything I have.

11.01.2022 QUADRATUS LUMBORUM MUSCLE (QL) [HOW DAILY HABITS CAN CHANGE POSTURE] If you doesn't work on biomechanical dysfunction and muscle imbalance properly it can f...orce pain situations in your body up- or downstream through an so-called ascending or descending kinematic chain. Consider the positions you are in throughout the day, those are your habits and your body will adapt to them! How putting all your bodyweight on one leg can screw up your back? I always emphasize to patients about knowing how to feel a connection with their feet to the ground (how do you ground yourself down like a sturdy) - as you can see, if you're the type of person who loves to just sag your pelvis off to one side and totally load up one leg like a crutch when standing, the long term issues can lead to all these different things happening upstream - all of a sudden 3 months later all you can complain about is this nagging back issue that seems to be an annoyance to resolve! You keep away at the site of pain, forgetting to address and adjust and bring awareness to what the feet are doing. If your hip and your feet aren't communicating, they're not going to want to work in synchronization to create a nice stable base for your torso, chest, upper back, neck, shoulders and head to sit nicely on of. Solution? Learn to stand still. If you don't want to, then learn to play hot potato (constantly move, don't let these dysfunctional patterns solidify)! #Physiotherapy #SportsPhysiotherapy #Osteopathy #MyoFascial #Release #Therapy #Triggerpoint #QL #Yoga #Treatment #Chiropractic #Blackroll #Muscle #Pain #PhysicalTherapy #InjuryPrevention #Rehab #Fascia #Medicine #Sportstherapy #Massage #Pain #Healing #Rolfing #Fitness #Training #Pilates #Gym #CrossFit #Anatomy #Massage #Treatment #ManualTherapy See more
10.01.2022 After listening to some pretty harsh comments & arguing over reopening or completely shutting down for another two weeks, someone in their right mind wrote this.... Dont know who wrote it, but its spot on. Perspective: WE ARE NOT IN THE SAME BOAT ... I heard that we are all in the same boat, but it's not like that. We are in the same storm, but not in the same boat. Your ship could be shipwrecked and mine might not be. Or vice versa. For some, quarantine is optimal. A moment of reflection, of re-connection, easy in thongs, with a cocktail or coffee. For others, this is a desperate financial & family crisis. For some that live alone they're facing endless loneliness. While for others it is peace, rest & time with their mother, father, sons & daughters. With the $600 weekly increase in unemployment some are bringing in more money to their households than they were working. Others are working more hours for less money due to pay cuts or loss in sales. Some families of 4 just received $3400 from the stimulus while other families of 4 saw $0. Some were concerned about getting a certain candy for Easter while others were concerned if there would be enough bread, milk and eggs for the weekend. Some want to go back to work because they don't qualify for unemployment and are running out of money. Others want to kill those who break the quarantine. Some are home spending 2-3 hours/day helping their child with online schooling while others are spending 2-3 hours/day to educate their children on top of a 10-12 hour workday. Some have experienced the near death of the virus, some have already lost someone from it and some are not sure if their loved ones are going to make it. Others don't believe this is a big deal. Some have faith in God and expect miracles during this 2020. Others say the worst is yet to come. So, friends, we are not in the same boat. We are going through a time when our perceptions and needs are completely different. Each of us will emerge, in our own way, from this storm. It is very important to see beyond what is seen at first glance. Not just looking, actually seeing. We are all on different ships during this storm experiencing a very different journey. Realize that and be kind. Unknown author PLEASE SHARE THIS POST - IT NEEDS GO GO VIRAL.
09.01.2022 GLUTEAL MUSCLES [ANATOMY AND FUNCTION] The gluteus maximus attaches from the posterior iliac crest, posterolateral sacrum, and coccyx to the Iliotibial band... and the gluteal tuberosity of the femur. It is superficial for its entire course and it covers most of the posterior aspect of the gluteus medius. The gluteus maximus crosses the hip joint posteriorly with a vertical direction to its fibers, so in the sagittal plane it extends the thigh at the hip joint and posteriorly tilts the pelvis at the hip joint. In the frontal plane, the upper fibers abduct and the lower fibers adduct the thigh at the hip joint (open-chain). In the transverse plane, it laterally rotates the thigh at the hip joint (open chain). The gluteus medius can be looked at as the deltoid of the hip. It attaches proximally to the iliac crest and distally to the greater trochanter of the femur. The anterior fibers flex, abduct, and medially rotate, the middle fibers abduct and the posterior fibers extend, abduct, and laterally rotate. The gluteus minimus can also be looked at as the deltoid of the hip. Just a smaller one than the gluteus medius. It attaches proximally to the ilium and distally to the greater trochanter of the femur, deep to the gluteus medius. The anterior fibers flex, abduct, and medially rotate, although the medial rotation component of the minimus is particularly strong because of the orientation of the fibers, the middle fibers abduct and the posterior fibers extend, abduct, and laterally rotate. The glutes are main stabilizer of the pelvis and also help level it - therefore they control every joint below them, including the ankle/foot. They are essential for hip, pelvis and low back stability and balance each time our foot hits the ground! As you can see in Pic 1, the glutes act to counteract anterior pelvic tilt (and the associated low back hyperextensjon). The glutes and core work together so we can brace efficiently when we need to, in order to create a neutral stable spine and torso. A neutral braced spine means efficient power output, efficient movement, more mobility, better posture, less prone to pain/injury! #physiotherapy #osteopathy #anatomy #yoga See more

07.01.2022 NECK PAIN OR HEADACHES? MYOFASCIAL RELEASE OF THE STERNOCLEIDOMASTOID MUSCLE The sternocleidomastoid muscle (SCM) is a paired muscle in the superficial layers o...f the side of the neck. It is one of the largest and most superficial cervical muscles. The primary actions of the muscle are rotation of the head to the opposite side and flexion of the neck. The muscle tends to be overactive in many people we see. It is commonly recruited to help stabilise the neck/head when we adopt poor postures and positions (forward head posture). It is also an accessory muscle to breathing along with the scalenes, so having poor breathing patterns and habits will cause this muscle to overwork all day long and develop too much tension and trigger points. The SCM trigger points can cause a variety of symptoms including headache and face pain, balance problems, visual disturbances, ear and sinus symptoms, and more body wide symptoms. They also can initiate trigger points in the jaw joint muscles. Additionally, the muscle can cause biomechanical problems in the cervical spine. It is the only muscle that creates such wide spread problems! The SCM is innervated by the accessory nerve (Cranial nerve XI) which is content of the jugular foramen (a foramen in the base of the skull), where the accessory nerve can get compressed or entrapped. If so, it can lead to hypertension in the SCM. That's why it is very important to treat (release) this foramen to give the nerve enough space to work properly. The pictures show several myofascial treatment techniques for the SCM. If you suffer from headaches, or directly after any muscle release via fascial soft tissue work, it is very important to stay well hydrated. Pure water or Coconut water are the best options! #Physiotherapy #Osteopathy #Headaches #Pain #Sternocleidomastoideus #Muscle #Triggerpoint #DryNeedling #Massage #Treatment #Rehab

04.01.2022 GLUTEUS MAXIMUS - TOP 5 EXERCISES Alright, you might have seen this one coming! Of course the glutes maximus is another commonly weak muscle and our most import...ant hip extensor! Plus these might give you some inspiration to work on that beach booty - summer just started! Reiman et al. (2012) have done a literature review which evaluated different EMG studies according to their activation of the gluteus maximus. Be careful, as EMG studies only measure detects depolarizations and hyperpolarizations and we cannot necessarily draw firm conclusions for force production, hypertrophy and strength. (Vigotsky et al. 2018)
03.01.2022 QUADRATUS LUMBORUM MUSCLE (QL) [STRETCHING OF THE QL] As a follow up on my QL series I wanted to show how you can stretch the QL and help yourself in case y...ou suffer from lower back pain. Before you start stretching your QL always make sure you saw a health professional first who confirmed you doesnt suffer of a herniated disc!!! Then the stretching is not for you as there is a totally different process of rehab for that! Also make sure your health professional has cleared your hips and pelvis! The stretching will bring the maximal effect if your health professional has freed your QL muscle from trigger points and tightness! The QL is a muscle that can cause lower back pain from lack of stretching! It must be stretched daily, especially if you sit all day! When doing these stretches for your tight QL keep these things in mind: Dont do anything that causes you more pain. Dont push through any pain. Go into each position slow and controlled. You should be able to breath normal during the entire stretching position. Hold these positions from 1-2 minutes at a time. #Physiotherapy #SportsPhysiotherapy #Osteopathy #MyoFascialRelease #Therapy #Triggerpoint #Gym #Treatment #PhysicalTherapy #InjuryPrevention #Rehab #Medicine #Massage #Healing #Rolfing #Blackroll #Fascia #Fitness #Training #Yoga #QL #Pilates #CrossFit #Foamroller #FaszienTraining #Muscle #Pain #Warmup #Cooldown #Stretching See more
