18.01.2022 I think that the government has missed a great opportunity here in Victoria. We often hear the term Target 1 million used by government as a catch phrase for wh...at is simply an election promise. Increased anglers and angling opportunity has come to a grinding halt during stage 4 lockdown and now rec fishers, fishing tackle stores, charter operators, guides, fuel, accommodation and many other non direct economic opportunities have been squandered. Fishing is generally done alone or with close contacts, one of the reasons we go fishing is to distance ourselves from others and take solace in our own company or to engage in true companion/mateship with people we trust. Covid presented a perfect environment for Australians to take increased interest in fishing as a remedy for COVID-19-related stress and anxiety. It is likely that during stage 4 lockdowns isolated people were more likely now to try fishing than they were prior to the pandemic. A recent report out of the USA has shown some interesting data on this. Social distancing has taken a sizable toll on our collective mental health, said Stephanie Vatalaro, senior vice president of marketing and communications for RBFF (Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation based in the USA). But being on the water has been shown in studies to have a calming effect that can help treat stress and anxiety naturally. Fishingand by extension, boatingare excellent ways to practice self-care and recreate responsibly. Not only did the Victorian Government fail to maintain CoViD at a manageable level so Victorians can live with CoViD19, but they removed some critically important tools by way of the outdoors to help Victorians be safe, socially aware, socially distant and most importantly mentally healthier. A secondary function of allowing fishing too continue during CoViD lockdowns was that with so many people isolated, out of work, kids at home, parents schooling and the human condition of needing to do something would have increased participation levels of people who generally would not have considered recreational fishing. The flow on effect would have meant that with careful CoViD safe planning tackle stores would have maintained reasonable sales, charter operators would not be going broke being allowed to operate although in a reduced limited capacity, guides could still guide with social distancing and most importantly we could have seen an increase in participation giving the government flagship promise of getting more people fishing more often a much needed boost. I spend a fair bit of time engaged with people in the recreational fishing industry around the world, business is booming in recreational fishing as a direct result of CoViD. Victoria is dead in the water and many businesses will struggle for a long time into the future trying to recover from what could have and should have been a prosperous opportunity. CoViD contract rates among those engaged in fishing, boating and hunting activities were low in other parts of the world due to the nature of the space and the environment where fishing, boating and hunting would take place. We now have a new pandemic - a mental health pandemic that will remain long into the future and long after CoViD has gone, fishing by its very nature improves mental health as many studies around the world have shown. With prevention always being better than the cure this missed opportunity by the Victorian Government will mean a reactive response of what could have been a great proactive healthy lifestyle platform. Here is hoping that if faced with the same or similar situations in the future our leaders will have learned from their mistakes. Just my thoughts - this long in lockdown leaves more time for thoughts and less fortuity to empty one's mind while fishing will do that. #target1million #morepeoplefishing #fishingisfoodforthebrain VRFish Victorian Fisheries Authority Australian Recreational Fishing Foundation Australian Fishing Trade Association Bia Victoria Futurefish Foundation Rex Hunt Charlie Micallef Ben Scullin Michael Burgess Robert Loats Melissa Horne MP Central Vic Lure Casters Super Series Hooked On Bait and Tackle Talking Fishing Brendan Wing
