25.01.2022 FUN FACT #11 TURNING A DEAF EAR Do you recognize that moment when you turn down your car radio so you can see better? Especially when we think we might have g...otten lost, and we want to focus on reading street names, a radio can be very distracting. Thinking about this rationally it might not make sense, after all you wouldnt think that a radio affects your vision, or does it...? Another common example is where you completely ignored someone who started speaking to you while you were just enjoying your favorite movie. Research refers to this phenomenon as inattentional deafness. Studies on humans revealed that concentration on visual tasks will render you temporarily deaf to normal-volume sounds. Brain scans showed that people were not ignoring or filtering out the sounds, but that they were not hearing them in the first place! The findings support a shared audio-visual centre, which, when depleted under load, leads to failures of sensory perception and awareness. Now lets look at dogs. There is an area in the brain called the thalamus. The thalamus is responsible for relaying sensory information such as hearing, sight, touch and pain. It also enables the dog to concentrate on one (!) thing at a time. Hence, when your dog is sniffing intently (*reading his favorite book*), he will very likely not hear you! Be patient, wait for your dog to finish his book and then call him over. Never assume your dog is ignoring you on purpose.

14.01.2022 Simple things....

13.01.2022 The emotional cup is a fabulous metaphor of life for all of us. For our horses its probably called The Emotional Bucket! We all need things that nourish and ...sustain us physically, emotionally and psychologically. **Thank you to Sarah Owings and Lili Chin for the dog version that inspired a horse version and for the original inspiration of THE EMOTIONAL CUP by Upbility, Publisher of Therapy Resources.

12.01.2022 Congratulations to our most recent puppy class graduates from our final 3 puppy classes in Cooma and Jindabyne in February and March. As many of you are aware I have moved out of the area and from now on I will be only be offering private training in the Canberra area (after October 2020 as I will be taking 6 months off). However Monique and Maddie from the Cooma SnowyVets will be taking over all puppy classes after Easter (obviously the start date of these classes depends o...n the Coronavirus pandemic and what this will bring), so for any future puppy classes please contact the girls at the SnowyVets Cooma on 6455 7800. For older dog training, agility classes and private lessons, Rebecca Storey (who has worked with me for the past 5 years and many of you know) will be offering these services still in the Cooma and Jindabyne areas. Bec can be contacted on 0404 774 312. Please be assured that I would not recommend the above people if I did not have faith in their knowledge and experience with dog training. All have attended classes with me; have recently attended dog behaviour conferences, and are working towards their qualifications in dog training. As I always say, it is important that anyone you employ to help you with your dog must be up to date with their knowledge of dog behaviour and working towards or have qualifications in dog behaviour. Thank you to everyone who has supported me and my business over the past 13 years. Thank you also to Mike and the staff at the SnowyVets for allowing me to run my puppy classes in your clinics and for your dog training referrals over the years. It has truly been an honour working so closely with you. I will still be available via email for any questions so please do not hesitate to contact me if you need any assistance on [email protected].

11.01.2022 I was hoping this show might be different but unfortunately it is not. Another dog training show on TV spouting outdated training advise and bullying techniques. There is no need for it #forcefreedogtraining

05.01.2022 Please note: Regarding puppy class and private training on Saturday 1st February. As some of you may be away I live on the south side of Canberra and I also have horses located in Burra, just north of Michelago. In light of the emergency fire situation here in the ACT I unfortunately will have to postpone all puppy classes and private lessons tomorrow. Obviously we are on high alert here, however I also am currently relocating my horses this morning. Plus, there is also the... chance that the Monaro highway may close , meaning I may not be able to get down or potentially back home if I do come to Cooma. Hopefully the situation settles and we can start the class and resume private training lessons next Saturday 8th Feb. Thank you for your understanding and I apologise for the inconvenience. If you could please send me a quick text back with your name so I know you have received the message (since I am sending out a bulk text message). Many thanks Cara Lukins Paws...4 Training

04.01.2022 Lol - apologies to the cat lovers (I am one too, there a 3 way conversation in our house between the dog, cat and myself )

04.01.2022 Heres some great information on some of the myths about separation anxiety in dogs. If you believe your dog might have symptoms of separation anxiety (howling or barking when you leave (which often results in complaints from neighbours); destructive behaviour, often at entry and exit points; leaving food or food filled toys and rushing to them when when you get home; excessive panting when weather is not hot; or following you around excessively when you are home), then contact us at Paws...4 Training and we can help. Email [email protected] or call 0404 696 421 for more information.

04.01.2022 As many of you are aware I have moved out of the area and from now on I will be only be offering private training in the Canberra area. We were supposed to go on a 6 month lap of Australia however unfortunately Covid squashed those plans so I am now back and offering dog training services in the Southern Canberra area (Tuggeranong to Michelago and all in between). Monique and Maddie from the Cooma SnowyVets have taken over all puppy classes, so for any future puppy classes pl...ease contact the girls at the SnowyVets Cooma on 6455 7800. For older dog training, agility classes and private lessons, Rebecca Storey (who has worked with me for the past 5 years and many of you know) will be offering these services still in the Cooma and Jindabyne areas. 02.01.2022 Congratulations to our graduates from our recent Jindabyne Junior Dogs class - Charlee, Murphy, Breck, Dusty, Turbo (not pictured) and Louis (not pictured). These dogs did really well in the class under some interesting weather conditions each week! They were learning to ignore distractions, come back when called with distractions, stay, leave it and walk nicely on the lead all in different locations around Jindabyne. Remember, you can now come along up our Junior drop in classes when you like and why not consider our agility classes in Cooma for some further fun and training with your dog?
