25.01.2022 Smashing "middle" with Tiger . Tiger is getting better every day. . Now we can even start implementing turns!... . This position is super useful especially for fearful or nervous dogs. . If you have built a strong bond and connection with your dog sending them to "middle" is a great way to "protect" them when they feel fearful, threatened or anxious. . 21.01.2022 Training Never Stops . Here we are incorporating Obedience Training into Game of Fetch . Before throwing the ball I am asking Hank to do a task for me. Even a simple sit is still a command to which Hank needs to comply to in order to stay in the game ;)... This teaches him patience and that there's nothing comes for free and he needs to work if he wants to have fun ;) . if your dog doesn't want to drop the ball in the early stages of the fetch game, try exchanging it for food or another ball. 19.01.2022 Say hello to our newest student Cocoa! . Cocoa is a 16 weeks old chocolate labrador. It was our first session and look at her go already! She and Wigs- the owner are an incredible team! It is a pleasure working with them. . We were practising the "drop" command. ... Since Cocoa already understands the exercise, we can now start focusing on duration. . Now, the secret lies in making that marker to ALWAYS have a higher value than whatever your dog is doing at a time. Free shaping is a technique used in training to gradually get the dog to perform wanted behaviour. Through Successive Approximation we reward the dog for each step in the right direction.... . Once Bob mastered that step I chain his behaviour of opening the pedal bin with picking up something that he loves. . It's a win- win scenario for both of us. 04.01.2022 Practicing marker conditioning, impulse control and reward discrimination . When working on conditioning verbal markers make sure you focus on the word and not the hand movement/ body langueage/ posture etc. This is crucial so the movement does not preempt the behaviour. Also, ensure to spend enough time conditioning the markers before any training takes place- just so it is solid clear to the dog what you're asking him to do! .... During this session I am using 2 verbal markers: 1. I make a sound and THEN throw the ball; for Bob that's an indication to chase it- it's a marker for a reward from me 2. "Get it"- this marker tells Bob that he can get the ball- it indicates to him that he can have an object that is away from me- it's a marker for a reward from away from me . 3. Notice that when I throw the ball but make no sound and give no cue Bob stays where he is. This shows that my arm movement is not an indication to go after the ball. (well, except for that one time when I remind him not to touch the ball by using a verbal marker for NO) . When markers are conditioned correctly the dog recognises their meaning and follows through. This teaches them reward discrimination as well as self control. . Might be quite useful when you go down to your local park and dogs start "arguing over" or "stealing" balls... just an observation.. . Now, stay pawsitive and go have fun with your dog! . 02.01.2022 Sadly, this scenario is way too common nowadays... . "My dog is not going to do anything. My dog is friendly." Having to work with stressed/leash reactive dogs on daily basis I hear these statemnts far too often than I should. .... People must understand that it is not about the dog that is off leash, neither it doesn't matter whether that dog is friendly or not. . I'm sure no-one would like to be randomly hugged and kissed by a stranger. The same applies to dogs. . Being on leash means that they are restricted, they cannot escape the approaching "kisser" even if they choose to! . 01.01.2022 Our side project with Tiger . For the past month we've been practising a new task with Tiger- "Play Dead on Command" . Tiger is a fast learner and a keen student! We always have so much fun during training.... . There are 3 videos highlighting our progress: 1. First ever session where Tiger doesn't know the exercise and I guide him by luring all the way through 2. Midway through our training- a session during which I already start fading away the lure, add a cue "Bang-Bang" and reward Tiger only for completion of the whole exercise 3. A final "picture"- an exercise entirely performed by Tiger with no lure and one command given. At this stage I also started introducing an intermittent schedule of reinforcement which keeps Tiger interested and always keen to perform his best as he doesn't know when the reward is coming what it will be and how much .
