25.01.2022 Last year we put in a submission calling for mandatory accessibility standards for all new housing built in Australia. Now you too can take action and join the movement to convince government to make this a reality. It's as simple as signing a petition, or you can choose to write or email the Minister directly. Check the Building Better Homes campaign out at this link www.buildingbetterhomes.org.au/take-action.html

24.01.2022 Spurred on by a brand new, costly, yet relatively inaccessible boat ramp built by his local Bega Valley Shire Council, which has infuriated many residents and left them wondering as to the local council’s stance on accessible infrastructure, PDCN President Chris Sparks featured as a guest on ABC Statewide yesterday afternoon, discussing the state of recreation accessibility in regional NSW. If you check the link below, the conversation starts just after 1 hour 3 minutes in, and goes for a good half hour with several other guests talking of their experiences as well. https://www.abc.net.au//nsw-state/statewide-drive/13040924

20.01.2022 A huge "THANK YOU" to the many thousands of people who took part in the #StandByMe campaign. After more than three years of tireless campaigning, last week’s NSW budget finally provided some security for the NSW disability advocacy sector, with a commitment to $13 million in funding every year for at least the next three years. We couldn't have done this without all of you, and it’s a huge relief to know that advocacy services for all people with disability are here to stay.

19.01.2022 We are deeply disturbed by the recent NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission report on the high levels of unauthorised use of restraints by NDIS providers. Restrictive practices of any kind should be avoided as they cause significant harm. In preference, behaviour support plans should be implemented to assist in protecting people with disability from harm, to themselves or others.

18.01.2022 If you're feeling isolated, alone, depressed or anxious, or simply want to talk with someone, you can call the Mental Health Peer Support Line on 1800 151 151. It can really help to talk to a trained person with their own lived experience of mental health issues. They're available seven days a week, and during the evening too. https://beingsupported.org.au

14.01.2022 How can people with disability live a fully inclusive life when almost nothing we interact with has been designed with our needs in mind? Let's look at how the National Disability Strategy needs to be reconsidered to achieve real change over the next ten years.

11.01.2022 To say that many people with disability feel let down by the NSW Disability Inclusion Plan (DIP) so far is an understatement. However there is now a chance to have your say to improve the situation, as the DIP is being reviewed. It's only by ensuring government demonstrate progress and accountability that we'll see real change for people with disability. That's why we at PDCN think it's really important for all of us to raise our voices together, and let the government know what needs to be done to make NSW a more inclusive place for all people with disability. We'll be doing our own submission to the review, and you can also have your say by taking ten minutes to complete this survey for the Dept. of Communities and Justice, who are overseeing the consultation process. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/NSWDisInclPlan

10.01.2022 Telehealth, working from home, essentials delivery services, online social events What has worked for you during the pandemic? Let's look at the positives we can all take out of this difficult and challenging year, to build a more inclusive future. Come along to our online event celebrating the International Day of People with Disability on Thursday 3 December! We've gathered a distinguished group of participants, including Disability Discrimination Commissioner Ben Gauntlet...t and NSW Minister for Families, Communities and Disability Services Gareth Ward. Let’s explore the ways in which COVID-19 could be a pivotal point for fast-tracking inclusive practices across our society. This is an opportunity to both listen to and discuss these issues with those who have the power to enact change a positive way to end the year! https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/building-back-better-toward Australian Human Rights Commission See more

09.01.2022 SUCCESS! Disability Advocacy secures long-term funding! After 3 1/2 years of campaigning, today’s budget provided much needed security for the NSW disability advocacy sector with $13 million committed over the next three years, to fund a stronger, more robust sector. This will enhance our capacity to promote, protect and advance the rights and inclusion of people living with physical disability. PDCN acknowledges the Minister for Families, Communities and Disability Service...s Gareth Ward for hearing the voices of people with disability as they campaigned for this much needed security, and going in to bat for us in what was always going to be a difficult budget given such unprecedented times. We look forward to working with the Minister and his department in co-designing the Disability Advocacy Futures Program in line with the recommendations of the NSW Ageing and Disability Commission review, and continuing our work building empowered, inclusive communities for our members, people with physical disability. 04.01.2022 The plan to force people on NDIS plans to undergo independent assessments is deeply concerning, and was initiated with no consultation of people with disability. There is now an opportunity to get more detail and provide feedback on how these changes will affect you. The NDIA is running several online consultations over the next few weeks - we encourage everyone on an NDIS plan to head to Eventbrite and choose the date which suits you best. If you have any accessibility requirements please let them know when you register for your chosen session. https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/ndis-have-your-say-nsw-acce

03.01.2022 We recently attended a government roundtable discussion on the potential phasing out of some single-use plastics such as straws in NSW. While we're mindful of the environmental issues involved, plastic straws remain the best option for people with disability - they are safest, most flexible and least prone to break down during use. There needs to be a balance between human rights and environmental concerns. During this roundtable we made it clear that it's vital to ensure co...ntinued access to plastic straws for people with disability. We also warned against making plastic straws only available in chemists, as this would turn straw supply into a medical issue - when in fact plastic straws enable people to be part of the community. And as attitudes to our society's use of plastic evolves, strategies must be put in place to prevent any stigmatisation of people who rely on plastic straws. We look forward to continued consultation with government on this important issue. See more

01.01.2022 Strong advocacy for people with disability is vital if we're ever truly going to become a fully inclusive society. Guaranteed funding for advocacy is needed, now and into the future!
