24.01.2022 With restrictions starting to ease, we are not open to the public yet but our volunteers are able to come to the sheds to do some work - as long as the distancing rules are applied. Many thanks to Harry and Rodney who got the Jaques 3/8 CY Excavator re-started this morning, but found a leak in the radiator which they are now getting a fix for.

23.01.2022 Aveling & Porter 11733 Update: The engine underwent its hydrostatic test yesterday. Just a couple of small issues to be dealt with, so all should be well for the engine to return to the museum before the Steam Up Long Weekend - 31st Oct to 2nd Nov.

22.01.2022 Thanks to Kim Booth from Timber World in Meander for cutting, dressing and donating the lagging, towards the restoration of our 5hp single cylinder Marshall Portable.

21.01.2022 WE'RE BACK!! The skies may be cloudy, but the welcome will be warm. The museum is open to the public again from today. We are back to our normal daily winter opening times of 10am to 3pm. Come and see what we've been doing during the closure: New exhibits, displays and layout. ... Social distancing is strongly advised. See more

21.01.2022 We welcomed 4 visiting traction engines late yesterday afternoon [Robey, Marshall, McLaren & Salisbury] These will be steaming today (Friday Feb 28th) and heading off this afternoon towards Sheffield SteamFest. Their first staging post will be Deloraine, with the run through to Railton on Saturday and the final leg to Sheffield on Sunday. SteamFest is happening on the 7th to 9th of March.

21.01.2022 SATURDAY 1st AUGUST is the date set for the reopening of the museum. Our new 'OPEN' flags are ready to go out, final layout issues and shed repairs are underway, our COVID-19 Plan is in place, and we are looking forward to welcoming visitors back to the twin sheds. Visitors will notice some changes, including that we are now able to accept payments by 'Tap & Go' at our new Reception Desk. However, due to social distancing, we are currently not able to offer rides on the train or behind the model traction engine. Rides will return to normal as soon as possible.

21.01.2022 Many thanks to 'Firewood Factory' for their very generous donation of firewood for our engines. The wood is now safely in the woodshed.

20.01.2022 In keeping with the current Government steps, the museum will be closed from today. We hope that everyone stays safe and abides by the current advice. We will be open again when all this is over.

20.01.2022 Things are getting back to normal at the museum after our Steam Up Weekend. Many thanks to everyone who made the event such a great success. We had good media coverage on radio, newspapers and TV. As can be seen in a photo below, at one stage we had both the ABC and Channel 7 filming at the same time. The ABC were here to do a piece for the Land Line program which will be shown in the first half of next year (around March). Special thanks go to the Historical Machinery Club of Tasmania, the Anglican Parish of Quamby, Purple of Prostate, the and all our volunteers.

20.01.2022 Thank you to The Examiner Newspaper, Launceston for the great feature in today’s edition.

20.01.2022 Anne, Ruth and Jean, being interviewed by the ABC for the program Landline.

17.01.2022 Progress on the ex-Hobart Aveling continues, with Steven and Hobby (assisted by Dave M) rigging up a small electrolysis unit. Their first results can been seen on the trunking, with a tide mark clearly showing the area cleaned and not cleaned. A larger unit is now being prepared that can take large parts.

16.01.2022 For those following the work being done on the Ex-Hobart Council Aveling & Porter: Steven and his team have now completed the stripping of all the rear parts of the engine for cleaning and conservation. The front axle has been put back on to assist with moving the boiler around as seen in the photo. The next stage is to start to gather together replacements for the parts that are missing and seek funding support for a new boiler. But for now, the engine will be put back together and will stand with our other Aveling & Porters.

16.01.2022 Whooooo won’t be long and the AVELING will be back home! Great work Michael.

15.01.2022 Whilst the museum is closed to the public and most of our volunteers are keeping safe at home, things are still happening. The closure of Shaw's Contracting Museum in Whitemore, following their move into Launceston, means that some of their artifacts have been donated to us. This includes the beautifully restored International Harvester TD24 crawler tractor which was delivered today. TD24's, built between 1947 to 1959, had a 6 cylinder diesel engine which produced about 180HP, and weighs about 20 tons. Other artifacts include three stationary oil engines, bellows from a forge, and a demonstration section of the wooden stove pipe used by the Hydro in their hydro-electric projects. We thank Shaw's Contracting and wish them well in these difficult times. The TD24 is seen alongside the Pearn Brother's Jaques excavator.

15.01.2022 Congratulations to Steven, Hobby, and others who have helped, the steam chest and trunking is finally off the ex-Hobart CC Aveling & Porter. Patience, oil, applied heat and a lot of grunt (including a 20 tonne jack) did the trick.

14.01.2022 Toot, toot! Train rides for all are included in the admission price.

14.01.2022 STEAM UP! Has started. The Aveling & Porter Traction engine is in steam - as is a Marshall Portable engine, the Wallis & Stevens model, and the steam Railway loco for rides around the site. Other engines are chugging and the fairground organ is playing. The Blacksmith is in the forge and hammering away. The catering team have the teas and coffees flowing and the BBQ is sizzling. Come and see.... We're open from 9am to 4pm Saturday, Sunday and Monday this weekend. See more

14.01.2022 After a good number of years awaiting repairs, the Fowler Dozzer is back on the move. Thanks to Dale O, and assisted by Brian, the tracks are back together ready for it to be towed out for a good clean up before other parts are replaced.

13.01.2022 We will be open again to the public very soon - but not quite yet. Keep an eye open on here for further updates. We are trying to comply with the COVID requirements and we will open again when we have them all in place. An on-line meeting has been arranged with WorkSafe Tasmania on June 17th to discuss our particular needs.

12.01.2022 As we are moving things around in the sheds we needed our little Aveling & Barford roller to flatten what tractor tyres had roughed up. Thanks to Brian, Hobby and Dale O, the little roller is out and about again, and working well. The clip shows Hobby rolling what had been roughed up during the recent delivery of the TD24 Dozer.

11.01.2022 With many thanks to both Royal Wolf Shipping Containers and Thomson Logistics for our new-to-us storage container. Once properly lined up with the wood shed, a new roof will be added to made some under-cover storage space as well. Again, thanks to Royal Wolf and Thomson Logistics for their gifting of the container and its transportation to the museum.

11.01.2022 It is with great joy that we can report that Aveling & Porter 11733 has returned to the museum following major work by Michael Howe of Penguin. Those folk who are in Tasmania can come and see the engine 'in steam' next weekend: Saturday 31st Oct to Monday 2nd Nov. (Long Weekend in Northern Tas.)

10.01.2022 They grow not old as we that are left grow old; age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn; but at the going down of the sun and in the morn, we will remember them. ‘Lest We Forget’

09.01.2022 Another safe delivery by Thomson Logistics to the museum. This time it is an old under-fired boiler from Prospect, Launceston. Our researchers will now have the task of trying to find out the history of this boiler.

08.01.2022 How well does the Aveling tick over- hardly a noise to be heard.

08.01.2022 We were pleased to welcome a visiting tractor a few days ago. The 1915 Mogul Tractor will be staying at the museum for a while, and we thank it's owner for this. The Mogul is in working order and is displayed alongside the museum's Titan tractors which were built at around the same period.

08.01.2022 An update on the Ex-Hobart City Council Aveling & Porter. The motion is going back on: Stage one. It is currently rigged to get things moving again. When together and on display, it will be rigged to rotate (forwards) using a push-button controlled electric motor whilst it awaits for us to raise the funding to replace the missing parts and get a new boiler. Congrats to Stephen and Paul for their continued work on this project.

07.01.2022 Thanks to Harry and Rodney, another Stationary Engine has been brought back to life. This 5HP Sunshine has been silent for a few years but was firing in full voice again today. Some work on the govenor and a couple of other parts is still needed, but it worked well enough even under a 'false' load.

06.01.2022 A little bit of exercise for the Lister 'M' out on a Sunday afternoon.....

05.01.2022 Celebrating International Rural Women’s Day. Thursday 15th October.

04.01.2022 Let’s celebrate the hard work and contributions of generations of agricultural women - this International Women’s Day.

04.01.2022 ADVANCED NOTICE. Change of opening conditions during August 2020. As visitors to the museum over the past few months will have noticed already, we are starting to reorganize the layout of the museum. The rearrangement of shed 2 will take a lot more than a day or two. The committee have therefore decided that much of the rearrangement will happen during our quietest month, which is August. Therefore, during August we will be open to the public 'By Arrangement Only'. Visitors who wish to visit the museum during this coming August should ring the museum in advance to ensure that they can enter the museum safely. Further details will be made public nearer the time.

03.01.2022 Day 2 is well underway.

03.01.2022 As part of Reconciliation Week, local MHA Guy Barnett [centre] presented the museum with a set of new flags. These will be flying proudly once we have all three of our flag poles back in place.
