25.01.2022 Tasmanian Oak Tassie Oak was one of the first timbers I ever worked with when I was a kid. Its where I began developing my skills as a young woodworker. Mainly because it was readily available and it was cheap. Years later I began to delve into other Australian species, then more exotic species. Ive worked with unique and rare timbers, ones with beautiful and intense grain. Id stopped working with Tassie Oak for years because I thought that Id outgrown it. I thought ...it was boring and the sign of a cheaply made piece. But I was completely wrong. Ive been using it more and more over the years and its fast becoming one of my favorites. Partly because of its colour, but mainly because of its grain. Tassie oak is a straight grained timber with very little feature. Many people consider that boring but thats exactly why I like it! You see, the straight grain of Tasmanian Oak, along side a well designed piece of furniture, allows the design to do the talking without an intense grain pattern complicating the aesthetics of the piece. The design stands out while the natural texture of the wood still remains. Theres certainly a time and place for Tasmanian Oak, and the Record Cabinet Im about to start is one of them! 24.01.2022 What screw? In the rare cases that I actually use a visible screw I like to use a wooden plug to hide it. A useful tip is to try and cut the plug from the off cut of the same piece youre plugging. Not only does it house a turntable as well as space for vinyl singles, but there’s also enough room to store around 600 records. A perfect piece for a vinyl collector. 21.01.2022 Ive always known the importance of having a hobby. Something that allows me to switch off from the hustle and bustle of life and learn something completely different. Woodworking was that hobby for a very long time. Then I stupidly turned it into career haha. Dont get me wrong, I absolutely love it. Doing this professionally has allowed me to learn the art of woodworking at a completely different level, a level at which Id never be able to learn tinkering away in the gara...ge on weekends. But, doing this as a career means that I need an escape of some sort, something that will allow me to switch off from the hustle and bustle of running a woodworking business. 18.01.2022 Burn marks The most annoying part of routing an edge detail (other than having to hand sand it) is the burn marks left behind from your router bit. Particularly when your router bit isnt as sharp as it should be. One way to get rid of the burn mark is to sand it out. But this takes time and you run the risk of ruining the crisp edges of your detail. I find a better way is to use the back edge of your chisel like a scraper and scrape away the burn marks. You can then use ...sandpaper lightly to smooth out the timber. 17.01.2022 Another happy customer. My client had been looking for a games/dining table for a long time. He said its been a dream of his to one day own one for his home. He told me he could only find tables like this from overseas and never knew custom made furniture was even an option, let alone having it crafted locally, which is something I hear often. I guess I take it for granted. Most of the furniture in my childhood home had been made by my grandfather, then in later years, by... me. So Ive always known that custom made is an option. One of the most exciting parts of my job is the look on my clients face when they first see their new piece. I love the fact that I can make people happy by making things for them. 16.01.2022 Here’s a look into how I created the arcs in my recent collaboration with @marikitsantiago First I cut a template from MDF. You’ll notice in the video that I use a router jig that allows me to cut the perfect outside radius. By simply moving the pivoting screw closer to the router, I’m able to shorten the distance between the router and the pivot point, allowing me to achieve the inside radius. From this point I’m able to transfer the template onto the solid Walnut used fo...r the arcs. Simple domino joinery is enough for a piece like this. It’s important when cutting the rough shape of the arc to leave excess material at each join as this allows an area for clamps to be used to ensure a tight bond. You see my client has pieced together all the different components in order to recreate the sound of his childhood. How cool is that!?! Mostly because I used to do a lot of it when I was starting out in woodworking as a youngster. 05.01.2022 Threaded Inserts My last build was a home studio desk which could be dismantled for ease of transportation. Using threaded inserts in the desk top allows the legs to be attached and dismantled easily without affecting the structural integrity of the desk. 05.01.2022 I started making things out of wood from the age of 8. From then all the way through my teens, the majority of my projects were gifts to my family and friends. My parents house contains a number of pieces I made.
