20.01.2022 The Ramsay community has grown stronger by our shared experiences this year. As we approach the end of 2020 and look forward to 2021, our staff are providing personal stories about working on the frontline in Victoria. Their words are inspirational: It was when I was visiting a sick grandparent in hospital that I first realised I wanted to be a nurse. I was in Year 11 at the time and growing up in Benalla in north-east Victoria. I remember watching the nurses go about their ...work and feeling the pull to care for people in the same way. I’ve been a registered nurse for 29 years now, and I love it. I love the people. My first job out of university was in an aged care facility and that instilled a great deal of compassion in me. There’s a lot of stories to be told amongst the elderly and, from a skills perspective, I learned so much from taking care of them. These days, I work mostly in the orthopaedic ward but, during quieter times, we all work in different parts of the hospital. I don’t think there’s a ward I haven’t worked on. As nurses, we are in the trade of caring. If we can help, we want to lend our skills and knowledge. Everyone wants to be part of the team that makes the community as healthy and safe as possible. It’s silly but I still get emotional about how the people we touch really rely on us. We are in such a fortunate position where we get to have a big impact on how well their hospital stay goes. It can be something as simple as a warm smile that makes their worries disappear. We always want to make sure we meet the expectations of our patients, so we measure patient satisfaction through Net Promoter Score surveys, which are conducted independently by a third party. Scores above 50 are considered ‘excellent’, and all Ramsay Health Care hospitals across Victoria were ranked in this tier throughout 2020. This really makes us happy to know that our patients are scoring us highly on the care they receive. 2020 has been challenging for everyone, but we are proud to have answered the call for help when other hospitals and aged care facilities needed help. It was a terrific team spirit. I think the secret to being a good nurse is to come in every shift and try to make someone’s just that little bit brighter. It’s a great privilege to care for others the way we do. ~ Hellen Lang, Registered Nurse

18.01.2022 - Our People - It’s always heart-warming to see examples of our team members embodying our philosophy of ‘people caring for people’. Mollie McDonald is an endorsed enrolled nurse in one of Ramsay’s perinatal mental health units in Victoria. Here is her story:... My mother was a nurse, so it was something I was always interested in doing. One thing I discovered very early on is that, as a nurse, you are constantly continuing your education. I completed 18 months study at Swinburne University and I have started studying again to become a Registered Nurse. When I heard about the opportunity to apply for a scholarship for the Mental Health First Aid Course, it was something I was really keen to put my hand up for. The course appealed to me as I work in the Perinatal Mental Health ward and I wanted to not only improve my knowledge of mental health issues but also my confidence with patients. The 12-hour course was run over a number of days and I really got a lot out of it; I’ve already started to implement some of the strategies I learned. It has reaffirmed how important it is to take a holistic approach to dealing with mental health issues. My skills have definitely improved and I am much more confident in my decision making around risk assessment. Doing the course as a group helped me build relationships with people in other parts of the hospital and encouraged us to feel more united as a team. It is definitely something I would recommend to my colleagues. It was great to be given the opportunity to do this course, particularly for those who are fairly new to nursing. I’ll be on the lookout for other Ramsay scholarship opportunities to further improve my skills.

16.01.2022 As we near the end of 2020, we’re asking some of our many amazing frontline staff to share their stories about working in health care. Have you ever heard of ‘safety huddles’? Perioperative services manager, Melissa Dillon, explains what they are and reveals some insights into why she became a nurse I received an offer to become a flight attendant on the same day I was offered a place in nursing school, but I was afraid of flying, so I jumped at the chance to become a nurse...! My sister was also a nurse and I was inspired by how passionate she was about the job. I loved it from the moment I started and that was 37 years ago now. The camaraderie and fun that came from living together at college and the satisfaction of knowing you could make a real difference to someone every day was incredibly fulfilling. I started my training in 1983 and have worked in different places overseas, but I found my niche in peri-operative nursing about 12 years ago here at Linacre Private Hospital. I heard about safety huddles being done at some tertiary hospitals and I wanted to introduce them here. Our CEO and executive team were extremely supportive of the idea, so I started to hold a few and they have been really well received by patients, staff and doctors. Safety huddles take place in the operating theatre before the first patient on the surgical list and every person who will be in the theatre on that day, from the technician to the surgeon, takes part. Each person introduces themselves and explains the role they are performing for the day. We also go through all the equipment that will be used briefly discuss each patient in terms of any relevant medical history, particular concerns and post-operative care plans. This allows us to anticipate things that we may not otherwise plan for. While patients are not part of the safety huddle, they know we hold them before surgery and it helps allay their anxiety. It can also reduce the operating time for patients. While my focus initially was to improve efficiency through safety huddles, what we’ve found is a huge improvement in team relationships and patient outcomes. It sets an environment where no one person is less important to the safety outcomes. It develops respect for one another. Ramsay’s commitment to patient and staff safety has always been strong, but I’ve found the executive also really embraces new concepts and is always striving for ways to improve. Once a patient is unconscious, we become their advocate their last bastion and I feel really passionate about that. But I’m also really aware of the need to protect my staff as well. As their manager, I feel an enormous responsibility to protect them from any harm during surgery. I’m well supported in this regard - we have safety training, frameworks and tools which are easy to apply and our Occupational Health and Safety manager is very knowledgeable and always available to help us.

05.01.2022 Our philosophy is ‘people caring for people’ and it’s always wonderful to see examples of our team members looking out for both their patients and each other. Rachel Gale has been a staff development co-ordinator for four years and is always searching for opportunities for staff to improve their qualifications and knowledge. Here is her story: I successfully applied for a scholarship for 12 staff to take part in a mental health first aid course, which is one of the many scho...larship opportunities Ramsay offers every year. The scholarships offer fantastic opportunities for clinical and non-clinical staff to develop their skills in areas of interest. I really felt the Mental Health First Aid Course would be useful, as it’s important we care for our patients’ mental health as well as their physical health. In addition to patients in the mental health unit, we discovered that a lot of our patients in the medical department, operating theatres and maternity wards also had some mental health concerns. Completing this course enabled our staff to better deal with this and understand patients from a holistic point of view. The feedback was great; staff felt empowered to better understand our patients and look out for their mental health. They were able to use the new skills in all aspects of general care - from After Hours Managers liaising with patients outside normal hours to those working with perinatal mental health patients and also our surgical staff. I feel very lucky to work at Ramsay, with so many opportunities to develop our skills to enable us to do our job to the best of our ability.
