20.01.2022 What a fantastic day. The four new tables and benches are now installed. They are very comfortable to sit at and look amazing. All the pavers were sealed today and look fantastic. It’s a memorable day to have the Commemorative Walk laid and looking so good. We are still waiting for the final 13 pavers with 26 names to complete the walk. The complete list of the 410 names are on the Wattle Range Council website. See https://www.wattlerange.sa.gov.au//List-of-Names-for-the-P We can’t wait to be able to celebrate this milestone in hopefully the not too distant future. Wishing you a happy Easter.

16.01.2022 If you haven’t had the opportunity to have your photo taken in the elves prop, make sure you get to the town square within the next few days before it’s taken away until next Christmas. Thank you to Di’s Gifts and Flowers for providing the prop and bringing so much laughter. Can you guess which Penola residents are in this photo?

11.01.2022 Some visitors recently commented how beautiful they thought the Town Square was and what a great space it was to sit and relax. They thought it really showcased how much the community cared for the town and for its people. It was wonderful to hear such positive feedback.

11.01.2022 Fantastic to see some of the musicians here for this weekend’s Penola Coonawarra Acoustic Music Gathering playing in the Town Square today.

09.01.2022 - Penola could soon have a new sculpture with the Penola District Cultural Fund seeking expressions of interest from suitably q...ualified artists for the design of a Bas-relief to recognise one of its pioneering forefathers. The Penola District Cultural Fund is a not for profit community-based organisation that commissions public sculptures of local historical significance. Previous commissions include a bronze statue of Alexander Cameron and the three Poets’ Corner busts of Adam Lindsay Gordon, Will Ogilvie and John Shaw Neilson. The Fund is now calling for expressions of interest from suitably qualified artists to develop initial concept designs for a Bas-relief style sculpture depicting the significant achievements of famous Australian Polar Explorer, John Riddoch Rymill. For further information about his achievements visit https://sahistoryhub.history.sa.gov.au//john-riddoch-rymill Applications should include a brief summary of the artists initial thoughts about how they would approach the task and include examples of previous works they have undertaken. The initial budget for concept design development is up to $3,000 with additional funding becoming available for the full design if, and when the project moves to the next stage. Expressions of Interest should be submitted to the Secretary of the Penola District Cultural Fund care of the Penola Coonawarra Visitor Information Centre by Friday May 7, 2021. Any enquiries can be emailed to the Fund at [email protected]

08.01.2022 Progress is being made! Two of the tables have been installed with new concrete underneath for a flat stable base. The concreting and paving for the other two tables is being done today. It’s looking great. The next lot of Commemorative Pavers will then be laid.

08.01.2022 Our new Tiny Library is looking fabulous!

06.01.2022 Happy dance time! We have finally finished painting and sealing the pavers. The cold weather has held us up as the sealer has taken ages to dry. With four coats a paver, that’s needed a lot of patience. We are hoping they will be laid in the Town Square in the next couple of months.

04.01.2022 How lucky are we! The Penola National Trust have installed an old red phone box in the Town Square. We are going to upgrade the Penola Terra Rossa CWA Tiny Library to be a ‘not so Tiny Library’. Thank you to David Smith for his restoration of the phone box and the crew from Balnaves Winery and Kym Fatchen from Wattle Range Council who helped install it. David has a bit more painting to do before the Penola Mens Shed fit out the phone box with the book shelves. The other Tiny Library is going to be rehomed at the Penola Primary School.

02.01.2022 Across from the Town Square you will see a new sculpture by Guy Detot. It is a feather quill made of red gum and is named Inspired. It’s a beautiful addition to the main street.
