20.01.2022 Homelessness is a big issue in our region, particularly for women over the age of 55. Figures show this demographic was the fastest growing cohort of homeless A...ustralians between 2011 and 2016 - increasing by a whopping 31 per cent. The Australian Human Rights Commission says this is a trend that will likely continue given the ongoing shortage of affordable housing, the ageing population and the significant gap in wealth accumulation between men and women across their lifetime. We feel this is an important story that needs to be told and we're looking for someone on the Northern Rivers with lived experience of homelessness (current or past) who would be willing to share their story to help shed light on this issue. Homelessness doesn't always mean sleeping on the street either - it can be couch surfing with friends, sleeping in your car, or other temporary forms of 'hidden' homelessness. If you or someone you know has a story to share - please get in contact with ABC North Coast reporter Leah White by sending us a DM, emailing at [email protected] or calling 02 6627 2013.

14.01.2022 Meet Hayley. "The day my life changed forever. It was Halloween 2018 and I received a call from my doctor to come to her surgery ASAP for my results of a recent biopsy. ... My heart sank, I knew within myself that the news wasn't going to be ideal. My heart was racing like crazy as I drove 5 mins up the road to have what I suspected was the truth confirmed for me. I was diagnosed with early stages Triple Negative breast cancer. My doctor told me to prepare for surgery and radiation, however when we met with my medical team they advised chemotherapy would be required. I was absolutely terrified about how my body was going to handle what I was about to go through and how I was going to be able to function as a Mum to my young children. Just over a month after being diagnosed I received my 1st Chemo treatment. The 1st treatment was absolutely horrible and I felt like I had been hit by a train. I barely made it off the couch that week and both hubby and I wondered how on Earth will gonna do and another 6 months of this! I lost all of the hair on my body within a month or so, I lost my sense of taste and all other senses were heightened. I felt nauseous 24/7 and I had very little energy, especially towards the end of my treatment. But I made it through the full course of treatment with a very successful result! Once my chemo was finished I went through 2 surgeries and then 6 weeks of daily radiation. The radiation Really tested my mindset, especially towards the end when I had quite bad radiation burns. My oncologist then confirmed that I needed to go on to 6 months of oral chemo. This was always a possibility but something I was truly hoping would not be required. The oral chemo would have to be the worst part of my whole experience. My feet would blister and I could barely walk. My oncologist could see that my body had well and truly had enough and we made the decision to finish the treatments 2 cycles early. This was an absolute relief as I knew I could not handle anymore. My breast cancer experience taught me so much about myself and how strong I am!"

09.01.2022 Lots of listening, love and empathy as I begin to nudge the direction of People of Ipswich back towards it's original course. I can't tell you how excited I am to be ramping this project back up after it's covid hiatus.

08.01.2022 "When I look at this picture it replicates to me exactly how I felt, that feeling of being hit by a train and then moving through and gradually becoming stronger and stronger in overcoming everything that I have to become the person I am today. I am truly grateful for this opportunity and I hope that me sharing my journey can help others out there who might be going through tough times." Hayley

05.01.2022 Shoot day for the first of the new People of Ipswich portraits!

05.01.2022 This is Ronnie and this post is from one year ago today. Like today, it was pretty cold in the morning. Ronnie is a Big Issue icon as he sold the very first Iss...ue in London in the 1990s. These days he sells in Brisbane. This morning I bought a Big Issue off him on the corner of Queen and Edward. He sells there most weekends. When I bumped into him I didn't have cash on me to buy an Issue, but said I would get some and come back. When he saw me coming back his face broke into a grin and he waved at me from across the road. He had been shivering on his corner from 730am and at 915am I was his first customer... The Big Issue costs $9 these days, which means the vendor earns $4.50 per issue. So in almost 2 hours Ronnie earned $4.50... For so many reasons it's not easy being a Big Issue vendor. When you see a Big Issue vendor please be kind and perhaps even buy a magazine. They try to make a living by working an honest job, and the $4.50 they earn from the magazine you buy will go towards their next meal or anything else they might need... Oh, and did I say the Big Issue is very read-worthy!
