22.01.2022 This is such an exceptionally good way of looking at horse development. As a Saddlefitter we are not only seeing the changes that horses go through skeletally and muscularly from our first fitting when they are first backed, but we also unfortunately see the results in horses that are worked too hard too early. And then, there are the results we see from young horses that have to ‘make do’ with saddles for now until they have ‘finished growing’ because of a reluctance to get... a saddle that the young horse may grow out of. Personally, I would like to celebrate every time the young horse grows - because we have allowed him to develop to his full capacity BECAUSE we have paid special attention to his saddlefit while he is growing! Please take your time and please let them develop to their full potential

20.01.2022 Studies like this are always fascinating and can help us look at our horses more closely when things ‘don’t feel right’. When we conduct assessments of your horse’s musculature, movement and symmetry we talk about developing a ‘baseline’; that is, and understanding of what is ‘normal’ for your horse. Whenever you see change from his ‘normal’ it can be worth investigating it further.

19.01.2022 Take a look at the shape change for this horse with kissing spine. His posture and muscle tone has improved so much! His spine has lifted and straightened, so has his tummy and his muscle development over his shoulder, neck, back and hindquarters has significantly improved as well. For all my customers that I rabbit-on about how important in-hand stretches and work over poles are for your horse’s back health - hopefully this gives you some inspiration

19.01.2022 Helloooooo out there in Toilet Roll Challenge Land! Who knew that what we hoped might be a 5 minute dressage test style Covid-world-close-down would turn into what is now an epic 120km Covid Endurance ride! It is definitely hard for everyone and incredibly challenging to navigate. (still sounds like endurance!)... What has been really inspiring to see is that so many people are looking for the positives, keeping up spirits and looking for alternatives to learn with or about their horses whilst we can't be out having our normal fun with them! We've been looking at ways to help out as well and we had so much fun and lots of good discussion with hundreds of people in our first Little Bit of Learning Challenge that we have decided to run it again - with a little bit of a lockdown twist - so if you can't currently get out to your horse regularly, you can still join in! 18.01.2022 These fires have been absolute hell. No doubt about it. It's been depressing and anxiety inducing every time we see a new area being impacted or finally hear from horse people who have lost absolutely everything but still say 'if you had a couple of spare halters that would be brilliant....' I can't fathom it and I think they can't quite yet either. And the godsend of times like this are the people you meet or reconnect with that are true angels and work all hours to try... and help out. Nerida Winters and her daughter are two of those people among others that worked so hard in 40+ degree heat over the weekend as fires started up close to Canberra. We had many volunteers come and help us in the stinking heat to pack and move more donated horse gear and I happen to know for Nerida that that was on top of driving into at-risk areas until 3am to help evacuate horses!!!! It takes a team - from all those people who donated the gear in the first place around Australia, to our wonderful collection point volunteers, to the people who have helped us unload it, sort it and repack it, and then to people like Nerida, Jess from Redemption Road Rescue, Louise James, Sue Williams, Annabel Dobson and many others who have then either gotten it all onto the feed trucks going into areas, or have driven it themselves to grateful but shell-shocked property owners - you guys are incredible and continue to inspire me to try and look for the bright moments in all of this. 17.01.2022 An exceptionally good slow motion video of how much movement a wither and shoulder has in walk under a well fitted saddle. Really notice how the scapula (shoulder blade) slides under the front of the saddle where your gullet plate and tree points live - then think how difficult it would be to have this free range of movement if the gullet angle is incorrect, the panel is hard or the head of the saddle too narrow. We spend a lot of time looking at the symmetry of the horse’s ...shoulders - just think for a second what happens when your horse has one bigger or more rearward shoulder? How much harder and how much more pressure will this shoulder get when it is trying to slide under the saddle compared to the other? Look how much the wither rolls from side to side...

15.01.2022 I was thinking about balance today. Scrolling through some photos I took of one of our clients when we were doing a fitting, I was struck by how beautifully balanced she was in the saddle, how effortless she made it look, and how easily the horse grew under her into balance as well. And this is a big young warmblood with a rider in her 60's! One of the things we absolutely know, is that pressure on a horse's back, completely influences directly and indirectly how he can eith...er use (or not use!) his back, deep core, neck, shoulders and hindquarters to move forward, stop, turn, collect, do transitions, jump and basically every little thing we want them to do. So we concentrate a lot on getting the fit of the saddle right for the horse as a primary concern, so that the pressure is as even as possible to cause the least amount of restriction. BUT! If the saddle doesn't allow the rider to sit in balance over the base of the horse's wither, if they are not comfortable due to the design of the seat, twist, knee block, cantle etc then they create more pressure to the horse's back in ways that not only stop the horse moving well in balance, but also create pain, discomfort and restriction in the rider! It basically all falls to pot! It doesn't matter how good a saddlefit we have done for the horse, if it's not good for the rider, it still won't work and affects both horse AND rider! Every single rider body conformation is unique in the same way that a horse's back shape is unique. It doesn't matter what age, fitness level, riding competency, or experience the rider has, the rider's balance and comfort is CRITICAL to the horse's balance and freedom of movement. Photo thoughts: Photo 1: what strikes me here is how 'easy' the rider stays over the horse's rather big movement, her weight distribution is able to stay over the base of the horse's wither even though his back is uphill and you can see how round he is over his back behind the saddle. And she is able to sink her weight down through her heels without restriction through her legs or tilting her pelvis in anyway Photo 2: The horse is able to stretch out from the top of his neck with a long stride still lifting his back well. Photo 3: You can see from the balance of the seat, that the rider could easily sit perfectly centered towards the base of the wither of the horse distributing her weight evenly over the whole of the saddle. You could just imagine putting a skeleton of a pelvis on top of this seat and the 'seat bones' would be able to stay centred and well balanced, neither tilting forward or back. That allows the rider's back muscles to relax, the thighs to relax and the spine and pelvis can follow the horse's movement easily without the body automatically gripping or bracing to try and stay in balance.

10.01.2022 Busy day picking up the donations of gear rolling in from around the country and working through it all! Thank you so much for what has been sent already! We are packing essentials into Care Kits that contain halters, leads, flyveils, hay net, antiseptic wound sprays, bandages, cotton gauze rolls, burn creams, flysprays, mini grooming kit, wipes, and all bundled into tough tubs. Where we can we are sending cotton rugs, manuka honey, electric fencing equipment, mineral block...s and magnesium as well as other gear. The amazing Jess from Redemption Road INC did a run into the South Coast with feed/hay and some of our packs and has seen the reality of what we are facing - trying to help as many horse owners as we can with the resources we have. Packs also went out to the Tooma/Corryong region. Tomorrow we see more gear head out to the Adelong/Tumbarumba region and a separate run down to Bemboka/Cobargo/Tomakin. As fast as we can pack it, it is heading out! Ably assisted of course by Hobbit the Wonder Pony!

05.01.2022 As Saddlefitters - this is our WHY. Working in the heat, the flies, the cold, the wind, the rain, the dust. The thousands of kms on the road away from our family. The midnight hours in a hotel room re-flocking a saddle for a client who needs it the next day. This is it for us - a physical act of love for the horse!

05.01.2022 Sacroiliac pain is something that we see in horses far too regularly and changes the way the horses uses its hind legs and results in compensatory back pain as well. All of these things affect saddlefit and your horses comfort under saddle. This is a really useful video for owners to recognize the signs.

05.01.2022 It’s something that all our saddlefitters consider - if we are going to fit with a half pad or sheepskin lined saddlecloth, does the saddle have enough room for it and does the half pad enhance the fit, performance and comfort for the horse? There are many circumstances when we absolutely recommend one; for instance if the horse is rehabilitating from muscle atrophy, if we have a ‘A-Frame’ shaped top line like some TB’s with a raised spinal profile, or if the horse is growing, changing shape and balance. Whatever the reason, listening to your horse is super important, along with using the best quality and design you can afford, and making sure your saddlefitters checks your saddlefit with your half pad in place!

04.01.2022 As saddlefitters we are asked to come and assess the saddles of horses with kissing spine. Frequently, poor saddlefit has been one of the contributing causes. For us, it is incredibly important to be able to work with other Equestrian Professionals in the industry who can firstly identify and diagnose the issue and then secondly, help rehabilitate the horse in conjunction with the owners and riders of the horse. We call this group of professionals our ‘Circle of Care’.... It’s a like-minded group of Industry Professionals that are working together in the best interests of your horse. It can include your Vet, Physiotherapist, Osteopath, Bodyworkers, Farriers, Dentists, Trainers/Coach, Riders and of course, your Saddle Fitter. Developing a management plan with your ‘Circle of Care’ for horses with kissing spine is essential to help the horse work in the most comfortable and pain free posture he can. What is equally important, is for us as horse owners to extend this ethos to ALL horses in our care; to recognize when the horse is struggling physically and behaviorally (which often has an unrecognized physical cause) and to make sure we bring in our professionals to help us investigate and diagnose the cause. When we know the underlying issue, our Circle of Care (it’s called that for a reason!) can help us improve our management, develop a plan and give our horses the best possible chance of being happy, healthy and performing at their best.

04.01.2022 A big call for HELP to our incredible horse community! So many horse owners in multiple states in Australia have lost their gear already in the fires in NSW, Vic and SA, many of them we know WE WANT TO HELP! UPDATE: for those wanting to make cash donations!... https://www.gofundme.com/f/emergency-horse-gear-and-feed-su We are calling out to all our Facebook followers and their friends for help collecting essential, CLEAN, good quality horse gear (please no old, dirty gear!) to help them get back on their feet. We are looking for halters, leads, flyveils, first aid gear (creams for burns, antiseptic sprays etc) grooming gear and probably buckets and hay nets as immediate needs. We will be updating this list as we hear back from people in these regions as to what else they might need. Having been through the Canberra bushfires in 2003 and losing all our gear, I can say I was overwhelmed to have donations of essentials that got us through - I still have the bridle that someone gave me from all the way back then!! Lets pull together and help our fellow horse lovers. Please see if you have anything you can spare and we will be letting you know how to get it to us from wherever you are. 01.01.2022 Happy Monday to you wherever you are! Today to inspire you, we thought we might share an excerpt from our Horse-Saddle-Rider Connection Course! It's the full 10 mins lesson, so grab a coffee (or glass of ...!) and settle in. In this Lesson we share how to check your Panel Contact and Panel Pitch and what it might be telling you about the fit of your saddle.... Even pressure distribution of the rider's weight across your panels is essential for the horse to use it's back muscles, shoulders and spine correctly. When there is limited or reduced contact, there is a HUGE increase in pressure on the area that IS in contact!
