24.01.2022 Sustainable food production AND Regenerative land useIs it time for us in Australia to make it fashionable for our residents to pick fruit and vegetables? For many years, the emphasis has been on driving prices down and this has resulted in a reduction of wages paid to the pickers. F&V should cost more!!! Heresy!!Is there a conflict of interest when a major supermarket pursues lower prices and encourages members of the public to squander their savings on betting, gambling, an...d other unproductive enterprises? The situation where producers have their crop categorised as below standard and are left with a bill for freight and packaging is not really fair. These farmers/market gardeners are part of our heritage and it would be tragic if they are driven to the wall and forced to sell their businesses/land. The ready and waiting buyers are often from another country and may not have the welfare of our residents or a commitment to regenerative/sustainable farm practices. How I miss Geoffrey Robertson - he could do a superb "Hypotheticals" on this topic. Talk with your friends and colleagues about this and find out what they think!!

23.01.2022 World first - university degree in regenerative agriculture!! Southern Cross University is now offering a Bachelor of Science with a major in Regenerative Agriculture from its Lismore campus and online. The course is based on specialist knowledge delivered in a whole-of-system approach to food production and farm management. It is specifically designed to address environmental issues in agriculture, degraded soils and reduced water holding capacity in the landscape. copied ...from: Greater Sydney Small Farms Newsletter - March 2020 to subscribe click on https://www.lls.nsw.gov.au//key-projec/small-farms-network It is a shame that permaculture principles and regenerative practices have not been incorporated into all tertiary farming, agricultural and horticultural education courses. It is in evidence based education courses that the world might change the practices used in activities from gardening to fully fledged farming.

22.01.2022 The Sydney Edible Garden Trail has had to be postponed due to COVID-19. While the restrictions on gatherings didn't quite encompass the trail, the organisers thought discretion was the better part of people care. They have instead opted to run the Virtual Sydney Edible Garden Trail this weekend, hosted by Costa Georgiardis of Gardening Australia and visiting 8-10 of the gardens. Any ticket holder can join in, so if you were hesitating before, now is your moment! Because we h...ave a number of members of PSN who were in the trail, we also have plans for a virtual garden tour, specific to the PSN related gardens. If it's successful, it might very well become a regular thing in the next couple of months - a virtual visit to a PSN members garden, with the opportunity to see what others are doing. Stay safe, stay healthy, look after your community, and permie hard!
