25.01.2022 This is a scary time for a lot of people. This graphic is very useful to help understand any symptoms you may have. I find myself referring back to it sometimes, just to reassure myself and keep anxiety at bay. Keep taking care of each other and yourselves, Joan

24.01.2022 I love this, as it's how our brains develop. The thing is, at the moment, not many of us adults are truly regulated due to the stress of this pandemic. Go gently with yourself and with others, co-regulate your child when you can, and ask for help when you can't. And above all, be kind. Take care all, Joan

23.01.2022 I have a heavy heart full of sadness following the tragic events in Camp Hill yesterday and the loss of a beautiful family. This is a lovely article on coping with terrible news, I hope it helps. Take care all, give your loved ones a hug xoxoxo, Joan https://mobile.abc.net.au//illustrated-guide-copi/5985104

23.01.2022 These look like a lot of fun!! I hope everyone is staying safe and getting by as well as you can. I'm thinking of you all, Joan

23.01.2022 Ah, the Corona Coaster of emotions. You are enough to contain them all, though it definitely doesnt feel like it at times! Take care all, Joan

22.01.2022 Just a regular Wednesday here, disinfecting the sensory toys from the playroom (those eyeballs looking out crack me up!) . Take care all, Joan

22.01.2022 A very timely reminder. Take care all, Joan

21.01.2022 I watched this incredibly touching documentary tonight. One of the main competitors has Autism and seeing him living his passion was just beautiful. I highly recommend this show if you’re looking for a nice short documentary to watch. Take care all, Joan

20.01.2022 Murtle hopes you kept all those items from yesterdays Outdoor Scavenger Hunt because youll need them for todays Challenge....but if you missed doing it yesterday you can still do it this morning and join in todays Challenge!

19.01.2022 Im on day 3 of full time Zoom for my university intensive. Its full on, and so much more exhausting than face to face I have to say. But in the breaks Im using the opportunity to give some of our friends a wash . Take care all, Joan

19.01.2022 Oops, I forgot the share Murtle's latest challenges! Have fun everyone!

19.01.2022 Yes!! I just love how Amanda phrased this. Fear doesn't keep us safe. Our actions do that. But that's the trick of anxiety, it makes us believe that anxiety itself is what is needed, instead of the committed action that anxiety stops us doing

18.01.2022 I think I look very different without glasses! Im making sure I look after myself so that I can continue to support the amazing people I am lucky enough to work with. My mind can easily fill up with thoughts of things I need to do and all the everyday tasks that seem never ending in running a business and a household (while studying part time!). Im practicing being mindful, observing my sensory input, observing the sensations in my body, and observing my thoughts. And giggling about my silly foil hair (though I do feel a bit like an astronaut, which is cool)! . Take care all, Joan

18.01.2022 And that’s a wrap!! I’m now closed for the year. I must admit I was trying for a while to get the right angle so the photo didn’t show too much of the bags under my eyes. This year has been my toughest year in private practice yet, as it’s been the hardest year for so many people. So much heartbreak, so much stress, so much despair. I decided to post my less than flattering photo anyway, bags and all, as a decision to normalise the huge toll this year has had on us all. Please take care of yourselves and your loved ones, and take a break if you can. I’m thinking of you all, Joan

17.01.2022 I’m on day 3 of full time Zoom for my university intensive. It’s full on, and so much more exhausting than face to face I have to say. But in the breaks I’m using the opportunity to give some of our friends a wash . Take care all, Joan

17.01.2022 This is a nice one for the older kids. Take care all, Joan

17.01.2022 I love the work of Amanda Donnet at Spilt Milk Psychology so very much. Hear hear!!!!! . Take care all, Joan

16.01.2022 One of the ‘greats’ of Play Therapy has passed away suddenly. One of the (many) reasons I love the field of Play Therapy so much is that the leaders of the field truly live the values they espouse, without undue ego or need for flattery, because they live for the betterment of children the world over. I never met Dr Schaefer myself, but I’ve heard him so often referred to affectionately as ‘Charlie’ by those lucky enough to have worked with him. Vale, and thank you for your service to families and children everywhere . Take care all, Joan

16.01.2022 This is a raw and very valuable expression of the stress that masking involves for autistic people. This adult is able to very articulately describe their stress using words. Its important to remember that kids dont talk like this, they show us through their behaviour, often its termed challenging behaviour. We need to look beyond the behaviour to find the cause, and do everything we can to support the child to develop. Take care all, Joan

15.01.2022 Its important to know the many reasons someone with Autism will engage in stimming behaviours. This is a great list, and I love the links to further information. Take care all, Joan

15.01.2022 This is a great little article from the USA about how to talk to kids about the Corona virus outbreak. It has some great links to. I myself have tried to limit how much coverage I watch, it can easily become overwhelming. I'm thinking of all my wonderful clients and their families at this time. Take care all, Joan https://www.pbs.org//how-to-talk-to-your-kids-about-corona

14.01.2022 I will hold your balloon until you are able to take it . I love this analogy. This is what I do in the playroom, I hold the child’s emotions, needs, wishes, challenges, and all the ‘stuff’ they can’t hold themselves in that moment, until they are ready to take it on. Take care all, Joan

13.01.2022 Were back....hope everyone had a relaxing weekend! Todays challenge is to make paint from nature. How many colours can you make and can you paint a picture with your paint?

13.01.2022 Ah, the strong willed kids can sometimes really push our buttons. Look beyond the behaviours to see what they really need. Often it is gentleness. Take care all, Joan

12.01.2022 This article describes the extremely difficult but valuable practice of self compassion - to engage directly with the source of our pain and compassionately respond with meaningful action is truly the bravest way of being in this world. May you go well, take care all, Joan https://www.theguardian.com//silence-your-inner-critic-a-g

12.01.2022 I loved the simple way a colleague has spoken of their measures for the corona virus in the lead up to cold and flu season. This short article gives some great links to hand washing instructions, and also asks clients not to come in to the office if they're unwell. If you can't make your appointment please call ahead and we can try to work out an alternative, if possible. Take care all, Joan https://zenithpsychology.com.au/coronavirus-covid-19-suppo/

11.01.2022 A wonderful colleague from the US created this website so she could share the handouts she'd made for parents. She's so very kindly offered it to us all around the globe. Please have a look through the handouts and see if there's anything that resonates with you https://parentsupportduringcovid19.com/

11.01.2022 Well when Murtle set her challenges out she didnt anticipate a wet day for us....but Im sure we can still make this happen in between showers or we can just enjoy getting wet while collecting your items. Dont forget to keep your items for TOMORROWs challenge!

10.01.2022 This was shared from a play therapist page I’m on and it looks like a really useful summary of tantrums, especially during the pandemic. I hope this helps us all be kind to ourselves, we’re all going through this, it’s stressful and unrelenting. And we will get through it together. Take care all, Joan https://www.nytimes.com//parenti/kids-tantrums-advice.html

10.01.2022 Shared with permission from a wonderful colleague in Newcastle, the daily challenge!! I love this idea for families now spending much more time at home than expected. I think Murtle the turtle would have gotten along very well with my old friend Travis the Intrepid Turtle! Take care all, Joan

09.01.2022 So much love for this, the joy, the shared moment. And messy fun! Take care all, Joan

08.01.2022 If you have visited any of these locations from 26th July onwards, please call the admin team to change to a telehealth appointment. Thank you to everyone for your ongoing understanding in these strange new times we're living in. Take care all, Joan

08.01.2022 For all those who need a smile, what a cutie!!! Take care all, Joan

08.01.2022 Sometimes it’s good to be reminded of the basics. We are not our feelings, emotions are simply data - our body trying to tell us something in the only ‘language’ it has. So please go gently with yourself, be kind to your inner world. Take care all, Joan

08.01.2022 Oops, I forgot the share Murtles latest challenges! Have fun everyone!

06.01.2022 I was so very fortunate tonight to spend time with the amazing crew of Paeds in a Pod at their Woolloongabba office, spreading my love of Play Therapy with the wonderful Sarah Harwood of Blooming Heart Therapy. What a privilege it was!!!! If your team is interested in learning more about Play Therapy please drop us a line!! Take care all, Joan

06.01.2022 Taking some time out for professional development, a vital part of being a psychologist. I was drawn to this topic - caring connection is what I strive for. And of course I have the required mini snacks ready to go . Take care all, Joan

06.01.2022 Happy International Womens Day!!! Im spending the day writing an essay on ethics for my Master of Clinical Psychology. What are you up to? Take care all, Joan

06.01.2022 A wonderful friend (who happens to be a nurse) just shared this with me. I think its a great little video, possibly something to watch with your older children too if they have questions about the coronavirus. Take care all, Joan

05.01.2022 Love this piece of work by Chelsea Bahe, play is the work of children, it is enough . Take care all, Joan

04.01.2022 This year has certainly been very different, and very trying at times for me and for so many of the lovely families I work with. I got some cards made recently to give to my wonderful clients which express some of my feelings around the year's events, as well as my hope and belief in myself and others. Take care all, Joan

04.01.2022 Yes! We think calm is the goal, but it’s not at all. We help children learn to stay connected to themselves during tough moments by showing them how we can stay connected to both them and ourselves during those tough moments. It’s a huge skill, but it can be taught, for both adults and children. Take care all, Joan

03.01.2022 This is a useful guide for parents to use in teaching and modeling non-racist ways of being. We must do this, we cannot stay silent. My heart goes out to all people of colour Joan https://www.healthychildren.org//Talking-to-Children-About

03.01.2022 I love Amanda’s work so much

02.01.2022 These look like a lot of fun!! I hope everyone is staying safe and getting by as well as you can. Im thinking of you all, Joan

02.01.2022 It feels like everything has changed so very quickly. I wanted to stay connected to my play room, so this is my current setup for telepsychology sessions with children and young people. I love the natural light coming in and being able to grab my other characters as needed (Dora is in line for the next Employee of the Month award!!!). Take care all, Joan

02.01.2022 Happy International Women's Day!!! I'm spending the day writing an essay on ethics for my Master of Clinical Psychology. What are you up to? Take care all, Joan
