17.01.2022 The first question asked on this page is about Bunions, and whether its progress can be stopped or slowed down. Unfortunately the answer to your question is no and maybe. I examine and treat bunions all the time as it is a very common deformity. Bunions are mostly a progressive genetic deformity that effect women more than men. Some things that make them worse includes high heels, narrow or pointy shoes and unaddressed biomechanical issues such as flat feet. Avoiding barefoo...t walking, tight shoes and getting custom orthotics is the most you can do. The only way of correcting a bunion deformity is through surgery. Its a very common procedure and can be done under local anaesthetic in under an hour. If you have a bunion that causes discomfort or for cosmetic reasons, then book in to see me for an examination and X-rays. Hope this helps. Dr Mina Azarian See more
10.01.2022 I recently received a question from a friend regarding the effects of pregnancy on feet. So here is a brief overview... The increase in weight and shift in the center of gravity really changes a womans posture. This in turn will change the pressure distribution and function of the foot. These effects are magnified by the release of hormones which relax and loosen joints and ligaments. This causes the feet to collapse and become flatter as a result. Unfortunately for some th...e increase in foot width and shoe size is permanent. Other complaints include sore hips, knees, heels and swelling, also due to the increase in weight and shift in hormones. If you have foot pain or have noticed a change in your feet, see a podiatrist. An orthotic device can be custom made to help maintain your foot posture and reduce/prevent strain and collapse. Orthotics can also help after pregnancy. It is important to keep feet supported at home too by avoiding barefoot walking. I recommend Orthoheel thongs to my patients (available from most pharmacies). Calf muscle stretches, getting a calf and foot massage and of course putting up your feet. Dr Mina Azarian
