24.01.2022 What an incredible young woman

24.01.2022 Last year, a review published in the British Medical Journal showed that universal antenatal screening for the group B strep bacteria may cause more harm than g...ood. The reviewers found that universal screening for group B strep "would have led to overtreatment of 138 583 (99.75%) women in labour." Given that the treatment is giving intravenous (by drip) antibiotics during labour, which have side effects and mean that movement and options are limited, this is an important finding. If you’d like to know more about group B strep and your options, take a look at www.sarawickham.com/gbse That page has details of my book on this topic which helps parents, professionals and others to understand the issues and the evidence relating to the screening and prophylactic measures offered in the hope of preventing early-onset group B strep (EOGBS) disease and it also contains a link to my information hub, where you can read about this study and many others. #midwife #midwifery #doula #birthdoula #pregnant #birth #childbirth #duein2020 #drsarawickham #positivebirth #childbirtheducation #childbirtheducator #whatsrightforme #gbs #gbsexplained #birthoptions #getthefacts #youdoyou See more

22.01.2022 Yes, why not Mark McGowan, Roger Cook and Family Birth Centre (KEMH)? Women and families matter, how we birth matters. Why? Because birth impacts our mental health and how we mother. And that in turn affects the next generation. Take a stand and change your 1 person support rule for all WA hospitals. Show the people of WA that you care, show them that you are there for them and their families. And while you're at it.... open up visiting times for partners please. 1 hour twice... a day is just ridiculous. What does it matter if they stay longer once they are there? Are you saying that for 1 hour they won't pass on any virus but as soon as that magical hour is up they start spreading disease? #itstime #letwomenchoosetheirsupportinlabour

22.01.2022 I often wait for the tears and know that once they've come and gone the birthing is going to happen

20.01.2022 While sitting in the ice bath, I drew my strength and focus on the breath from all the beautiful women that I had the pleasure accompanying through their births. Thank you

20.01.2022 While there were some unpleasant restrictions like the 1 person support rule happening during the COVID peak, it seems that the lockdowns also brought some very positive aspects. The dropping rare of inductions for example. And now reading that there were actually less premature births is really fascinating. Would love to see more research into this.

20.01.2022 Group B strep testing is offered routinely to all women in WA around 36 weeks. You should know that this test, like everything else, is optional. If you test positive you will be offered intrapartum antibiotics, again it's optional (but very much so pushed by most care providers). So before you test, look all the information and look at what you will do with that information. . . #Repost @drsarawickham... 17.01.2022 We have our doula training practice day on Monday 14th September in Maylands (WA) and if you are 38 weeks or more and would be able to donate your time to helpi...ng out with doula practice that would be great. You would need to be willing to spend 2 and a half hours having a combination of massage, acupressure, a variety of doula skills including working with a rebozo, pelvic pathways positioning / stretching and receiving labour and birth information. We need 8 women for the morning session from 9:30am till 12pm, then another 8 women for the afternoon session from 2pm till 4:30pm (we cannot change these times so you must be available these times). Please email me at [email protected] . . . #doulatraining #doulatrainingperth #doulatrainingacademy #mumsinperth #pregnantinperth #perthmums See more

17.01.2022 Thinking of becoming a doula? Look at the amazing training Vicki has put together

17.01.2022 HOMEBIRTH AFTER 7 CESAREANS With her first pregnancy she was induced at 41 weeks pregnant because she was told she was pregnant long enough. The cascade of... interventions began and it ultimately led her to the operating room. Her doctor told her that he was glad because she had the smallest pelvic opening he had ever seen. With her second pregnancy she was told she was not a good candidate for a VBAC because the doctor noted she had a small pelvic opening. She had her second, third and fourth baby via belly birth. She figured this was just the way she was meant to give birth. Her doctor convinced her that it was safe to have as many cesareans as she wanted. This is simply not the truth. But believing and trusting her doctor she proceeded to have cesareans with her fifth and sixth child. When she was pregnant with her 7th baby, she met with a high risk OB who was shocked to hear that she had so many cesareans and she had no idea how dangerous they were becoming. All she had ever heard were the risks of rupture with a VBAC but never the risks with a cesarean, like placenta accreta which is a much higher risk with multiple cesareans than a rupture. The high risk OB was convinced she had placenta accreta, her regular OB disagreed. But they told her for liability reasons, they would be doing another cesarean sooner rather than waiting. She fought to stay pregnant as long as possible out of fear for her childs health. At 37 weeks she had another cesarean and her gut was right. Baby was born too early and needed a NICU stay and she had no placenta accreta. When she became pregnant with her 8th child, she had a strong urge to deliver vaginally. She prayed and asked God to help her. It led her to a midwife local to her who agreed to help her. At 40weeks+4days, she went into labor with her water slowly breaking. She labored with her husband and children supporting her. She pushed for about an hour, his head finally emerged, and his body followed. The midwife lowered him to the ground and she picked up her son. Her first child that she birthed vaginally after having 7 cesareans. That moment made every battle I faced to that point worth it. The unnecessary early delivery of my last baby, the NICU stay, the fear mongering from the doctors, the chronic neck pain from the epidural, the constant nos from so many midwives and doctors when trying to get support for a vbac, overcoming the fear instilled in me by societys view of vbacs, dealing with non supportive people, being told I was crazy, all of it and so much more. In all my csection deliveries, I didnt hold my baby until hours after delivery, nine whole hours with the last one. After I picked him up, my kids came in and got to see their new baby brother. 17.01.2022 They told you about the contractions, but did they tell you about the expansion? Did they tell you how your body would open to make way for the whole universe ...to pass through? Did they tell you how your heart would explode with a love bigger than anything youve ever known as you pulled your baby to your chest? They told you about the ring of fire but did they tell you about the crown of stars? Did they mention that theres a moment when your baby enters the world and you leave your body and touch the heavens and become the light of a million galaxies? Did they tell you how the pain of stretching to receive your child would be more exquisite than any sensation you've felt? They told you would scream but did they tell you about how would you roar? Did they tell you about the power that would rise up from your belly as you called your baby forth with your mighty voice? Did they tell you how you would embody the wild woman within you as breathe fire with your song? They told you would bleed, but did they tell you how that sacred blood wouldn't scare you? How you would feel grateful for that magical liquid of life as it trickled down your leg - how you would honour its flow and how it would help you heal a lifetime of hating your body's bleeding cycle. They told these stories and taught you to fear birth, to fear your power, to fear yourself. But you are stronger and wiser than that mama. You know that birth is your divine dance, your soul's song, your moment with God, and you walk fearlessly into her open arms. Beautiful words and art by: Catie from Spirit Y Sol .

16.01.2022 2%. That's how many pregnant women have Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG). Horrible morning sickness that lasts for the duration of the pregnancy, weight loss equalli...ng 15% or more of your total body mass, and the inability to drink water or consume any food without vomiting are among the symptoms. 10%. That's how many women with HG who, although their pregnancy was planned, get an abortion due to their OB refusing to provide them with the meds, care, and hydration they need in order to survive the 40 weeks. These well-meaning doctors often do not realize they are being neglectful, but HG awareness is so limited that they simply do not understand how sick their patients are, nor do they realize that regular IV hydration infused with vitamins and medications is often the only way to combat this sickness. ~30%. That's the estimate number of HG pregnancies within an otherwise happy marriage that end in divorce, largely due to the stress caused by the wife literally believing she is dying and her partner thinking she is exaggerating, being lazy, or putting on a show. 0%. That's the percent of people who understand why HG occurs, how to adequately treat it, or how to prevent it from arising in future pregnancies. I'm extremely fortunate to have had a vast support system of doctors, nurses, family, friends, and my fiance who have both taken my sickness seriously from the start and sacrificed greatly in order to provide care for me. When I have needed more meds, I was given them. When I needed help with Ava, someone showed up to care for her. When I spent months unable to eat or drink, I was given a homecare nurse who would give me daily IVs in the comfort of my own bed in order to keep me hydrated. When all I could do was sleep all day, Steve wouldn't question my motives nor guilt me into doing more than I could. Unfortunately most women are not this lucky, so instead of doing "normal" maternity photos I decided I wanted to do a raw, vulnerable, and brutally honest session to represent the 2% of women for whom pregnancy is anything but glowing. I'm still sick. I still get IVs 3 days a week. I still vomit sometimes. But I am 27 weeks, and the finish line is drawing close. I can not say it has been easy or fun, but I can say that it will be SO worth it when I hold these little twins in my arms, able to once again eat and drink to my heart's content without the help of needles nor use of a bucket. Thank you so much to my fiercely loyal friend Hana Shapiro of @Red_Road_Media for providing me with these photos and the ability to speak out on behalf of other women with HG!

16.01.2022 What an honour it is to have the opportunity to meet warrior mummas and work with incredible midwives and space holders. Thank you for the shout out, it is a privilege knowing you and working with you Norafiah

15.01.2022 STOP WHAT YOU'RE DOING, and watch what's probably the Ad of the Year. The #wombstories campaign for Bodyform, created by AMVBBDO + Framestore and directed by Emmy winner Nisha Ganatra, is a masterpiece of craft and message. Truly, truly, bloody brilliant (pun intended).

15.01.2022 Skin to skin in theatre... ask for it.

15.01.2022 With everyone taking measures to slow/ stop the spread of COVID-19 many hospitals have decided to restrict a woman's support team for the birth to just the partner. As doulas we are very opposed to this and concerned about the well-being of our birthing families. I've shared Vicki's post here as she expresses this so well...

15.01.2022 Suz is incredible in her knowledge around optimal mobility development in babies. And she's finally set up a page and website.

14.01.2022 #Repost @belle_verdiglione Perth, Western Australia Delayed Cord Clamping: you need to weigh up the benefits vs the risks and always in conjunction with your medical care provider & the best needs for you & your baby .... but here are 5 benefits to delaying the clamping of the cord: ... #1: NEURODEVELOPMENTAL BENEFITS #2: DECREASED RISK OF ANAEMIA #3: INCREASED BLOOD VOLUME / SMOOTHER CARDIOPULMONARY TRANSITION #4: INCREASED LEVELS OF STEM CELLS #5: BETTER OUTCOMES FOR PRE-TERM BABIES I love this quote from Erickson-Owen; "When we wait five minutes to clamp the cords of healthy babies, there is a return of the infant's own blood from the placenta, and one of the results is a return of up to 50 percent of the baby's iron-rich blood cells said URI Professor of Nursing Debra A. Erickson-Owens, a certified nurse-midwife, who conducted the study with Judith S. Mercer, also a midwife and URI nursing professor emeritus. "So when the brain needs red blood cells (and iron) to make myelin, the robustness of the iron stores make a big difference These photos were taken 5 minutes apart & you can visually see the difference. 12.01.2022 The parenthood journey.... your soul will evolve like never before

11.01.2022 Forward leaving inversion.... really helpful in late pregnancy to help untwist any ligaments in the lower uterus and help baby nestle in a good position in preparation for birth. As taken from Spinning Babies website: "Kneeling afterward also allows temporarily lengthened ligaments to align the uterus with the pelvis. The cervix may become less tipped or tight and then be able to let the baby’s head position better, and the cervix to dilate in labor more easily. This techniq...ue may also reduce back pain, hip pain, or tailbone pain. Improved fetal positioning does occur too. It is a very worthwhile activity because simply turning the baby’s head down is a notable achievement in and of itself." . . Love love love getting update pictures from my beautiful families and so beautiful to see furry doula at work while I'm not there. 10.01.2022 This says a lot about the system.... Witnessing undisturbed birth in the home setting transformed midwives' attitudes towards birth. Following exposure to homebirth, many midwives felt they were seeing undisturbed birth for the first time. This led them to question their current understanding of physiological birth and develop a new awareness of the powerful influence that the environment has on labouring women. This new understanding resulted in changes to their practice. ...If you want a natural, undisturbed birth, seek out one of the beautiful privately practicing midwives we have here in Perth. There are some great midwives working for the community midwifery program add well, but please be aware that they are employed by the "system"/ government and work under strict policies. See more

09.01.2022 A little memory popped up on my Facebook. This was the day my biggest life transformation happened. This was the day I took my power back and birthed my second baby peacefully at home, in water. The day something in me awakened. . I might feel sad for my firstborn, as I wished for a different beginning for her. But I don't regret my journey. The growth I went through, the learning I took from it. Without the 2 vastly different journeys of birthing my first 2 children, I ...wouldn't be where I am today. It led me to become a fierce advocate for well supported birth and it led me to become a doula. . 06.01.2022 Stretch and Sweep.... something that gets "offered" more and more frequently to women. Know what you are consenting to and why. A great read written by Pip at Birthsavvy.

06.01.2022 And suddenly.......everything that Midwives have been saying for over a century is coming to pass. "Healthy women should be staying at home or birthing in a loc...ation outside of the walls of a hospital. The hospital is full of disease that a Mother and brand new baby should not be exposed to." #homebirth #birthwithoutfear #midwifelife #familycenteredbirth *Post borrowed from Renee Hanevold*
