21.01.2022 C A R B S / F O R / W E I G H T / L O S S I see so many women who have a bad relationship with carbs. I don't ever want you to feel like carbs are evil. In fact, one type of carbohydrate, RESISTANT STARCH (RS), can be super beneficial to your health. I have one fave way of incorporating more RS in my diet - it takes no extra effort and is so simple to do (stay posted to find out exactly what it is ). .... Using more RS in your diet can have a great number of health benefits, especially when it comes to weight loss . It can: - Improve your liver function (which you need for fat loss) - Regulate your blood sugar levels - Improve Insulin sensitivity - Reduce hunger - Repair metabolic syndrome - Enhance gut health - Feed a healthier gut microbiome - Improve fat utilisation - Reduce fat storage - Improve muscle mass - Reduce cholesterol levels . RS works by remaining intact and not being influenced by the digestive processes in your small intestine. It passes into the large intestine unscathed, where it is then a fuel source to gut bacteria residents. The bacteria ferment it and produce short chain fatty acids. It is these short chain fatty acids that provide the many health benefits. . RS can be found in food sources like - beans, lentils, potatoes (especially high when cooked and cooled), bananas, avocado, and quinoa. . I have a really simple way to boost my daily intake of RS - Are you ready to find out what it is? (It's up next...I guarantee u will want to give it a go...) . @melissa.hohaia.naturopath See more

20.01.2022 V A G A L // A N X I E T Y . Your vagus nerve runs from your brain gut and connects to other organs including your heart and lungs. This nerve helps to regulate - Breathing Heart rate... Blood pressure Digeation Even speaking . Vagus nerve issues have been linked with anxiety, depression and throat spasms (where you can’t speak for any length of time). . Any gut issues/ distress can put pressure on this nerve and irritate it. Poor posture and muscular imbalances also cause irritation, so can too much alcohol and spicy foods. . VAGAL TONE IS IMPORTANT HERE By increasing your vagal tone, your body can relax faster after stress. The more you increase your vagal tone, the more your physical and mental health improves and vice versa. Low vagal tone is associated with inflammation, depression, gut issues, heart attacks and strokes. Studies have shown that mothers in pregnancy, who are anxious/ depressed/ angry have lower vagal tone - this is passed on to their newborns . SOME PRACTICAL TIPS FOR ACTIVATING YOUR VAGAS NERVE 1 Deep slow breathing, right into your belly. Slow exhales are important! 6 breaths in 60 seconds. Do this throughout the day. 2 Cold showers regular exposure to cold lowers your fight/flight response. 3 Gargling try gargling some water before you swallow it. 4 Humming, chanting and singing. 5 Meditation 6 Laughter and social interactions (1.5 meters apart of course ) 7 Massage 8 Exercise brisk walking, weights, yoga, high intensity training. 9 Probiotics different strains of gut bacteria affects the brain function (and the gut). Less stress hormones are produced due to the impact of probiotic strains on neurotransmitters (through the vagus nerve). See more

14.01.2022 I T ' S // W I N T E R Tips to help keep boosting your immunity with... - Garlic + Onions - they are very anti-inflammatory foods which have been used FOREVER in most cultures. They are great for your gut microbiome AND as we know, much of your immune system is there! -... Ginger - boosts immunity and can also decrease inflammation. You can add ginger to teas, fresh juices, soups and curries! The options are endless - Apple Cider Vinegar - rich in antioxidants, Vitamin C and Vitamin E. Made from the fermented juice of crushed apples. Great for your immunity and can be added to water and taken before meals to aid digestion. - Bone Broth - very rich in vitamins and minerals and also good for digestion. Bone broth can be made from any animal bones and then simmered for a few hours which allows the minerals and nutrients to be released. - Mushrooms - used in Eastern medicine forever! Reishi, shitake etc. These can be added to vegie dishes and smoothies. We use them as herbal supplements in liquid or tablet form as a potent immune booster as they are great for reducing viruses, allergies and asthma. - Lemons + Limes - rich in Vitamin C they stimulate white blood cell production, help with skin healing and capillary health. Capillaries are the smaller blood vessels in your body allowing oxygen to diffuse from the blood to cells, improving energy and blood flow. They can be added to almost anything, water, juices, squeezed over salads, into dressings, fish and chicken. - Stay well, @samboticanaturopath - - Artwork by @marcosguinoza See more

06.01.2022 . D E S P E R A T E . D I E T E R . I started seeing Mel 3 years ago as a ‘desperate dieter’. Over the 10 years prior I had tried almost every diet and exercise regime to achieve weight loss results and would constantly compare myself to others who didn’t have to scrutinise every calorie. In working with @melissa.hohaia.naturopath , I learnt that my absence of results wasn’t from my lack of trying and the validation of this alone was golden! Mel coordinated tests to underst...and my needs and implemented some key hormonal supports and lifestyle changes. We learnt as we went by listening to my body and the results it generated. I won’t lie it was hard to let go of control at times, but the journey was so much more than physical! It was not overnight success that I achieved. But more importantly, I no longer wanted overnight success because I understood the changes I needed to make and why. In partnership with Mel I was able to achieve healthy weight loss, address my PCOS and fertility conditions and finally understood how important it is to show yourself kindness! Mel’s passion is contagious and I am so glad that I found her! - Shannon.C. 04.01.2022 We all know what it feels like to be stressed. Our blood pressure rises, muscles get tense, our hands go cold and sweaty and we get more emotionally reactive, but do you know why this occurs? Many people don't fully appreciate that stress is a full body, major, physiological event in the body and not a single tissue, organ or system in the body goes unaffected. When under stress our body releases a cascade of chemistry that floods the body and changes the way our body functi...ons. In this video Eddie Enever our "Stress Specialist" and facilitator of the Perth Natural Medical Clinics Stress Reduction Program talks to you about how stress can make you unwell. If you know that stress is impacting your health and healing and would like to learn time tested, evidence based techniques to master the stress in your life, join us on the PNMC stress reduction program. 03.01.2022 You've been eating them all wrong! . Do you wanna know what gives this smoothie it's weight loss boosting ability (besides the healthy balance of fats and protein) - it is the power of RESISTANT STARCH! .... If you are someone who enjoys a smoothie like me, then this really simple hack will be one you want to try. . It involves the BANANA PEEL... Yep, you read that right! It uses the PEEL of the banana! (which is often a discarded powerful source of resistant starch - so why not keep it?!?) . Every banana (peel and all) contains around 10-30mg of resistant starch, which is enough of a daily dose to get all the beautiful health benefits that come from resistant starch. . The trick is to buy organic, and then cut up the whole banana in chunks (peel still on) and put it in the freezer. . Then the next time you make your smoothie, grab a few whole banana chunks and blend it up - you won't even be able to taste it, but your gut bugs will thank you for it and you can start to reap the health benefits. ( Look back on my previous post if you missed the details on the health benefits of resistant starch...there's a decent list.) . Just a note: if you are banana-bent on using the peel, it's advised that you wash and scrub all peels to rid them of any pesticides or chemicals that may be present before consuming or cooking. --- Wanna know what is in my smoothie? . It contains: 300ml milk alternative (rice milk, coconut milk etc.) Small handful of ice cubes 2 scoops collagen protein powder 1/2 small avocado 1 handful of spinach 1 tbsp cacao powder 1 small frozen bananna (peel left on) Blend until smooth. . There you have it. --- I'd love to know what you think? . . . @melissa.hohaia.naturopath See more
