The why delves into the past, which we cannot change, but the what I need is within our control and is often something we can change to move forward.

DeJong is an Occupational Therapist and Anatomy Trains Structural Integration practitioner with a special interest in scar and pain therapies. Helen has over 20 years of experience working with people following acute physical trauma, surgery, burn injuries and neurological conditions. Helen provides an individualised approach to treatment, discussing personal goals and preferences to treatment with each client. The way the scar looks on the surface of the skin doesnt necessarily reflect the amount of pain, tightness, or functional restriction it can cause. Helen treats all types of scars, including but not limited to skin cancer removal, burn injury, mastectomy, radiation fibrosis, C-section scars, and surgical scars. Helen is also conducting research as part of a doctoral degree, in conjunction with the Fiona Wood Foundation, Edith Cowan University and the Harry Perkins Institute for Medical Research. She is developing new objective scar evaluation methods, and investigating factors that influence scar formation. Her aim is to develop an evidence base to support current scar and pain treatments and also develop new therapies to promote scar-less healing. Helen has published a book chapter on scar treatment, published in peer reviewed journals, presented at national and international conferences, lectures, and runs scar workshops. Helen is a self-confessed scar and pain nerd, and is more than happy to discuss any concerns you have regarding your scars or ongoing pain. 10.01.2022 Pain, tightness, numbness or hypersensitivity are all symptoms of post radiation fibrosis. Radiation treatment is a form of controlled burn treatment which does help destroy cancer but also damages the surrounding skin, underlying fat, remaining breast tissue and muscle. Symptoms often don’t start until months after treatment have finished. The degree of fibrosis is not predictable, but it is inevitable. Most people are unaware that treatment is available. ... Early intervention both during radiation treatment and directly after treatment has finished reduces the risk of severe symptoms. You don’t need to live with constant pain and tightness. Treatment is simple, can be done at home and is effective. 08.01.2022 Abdominal Pain following surgery? Approximately 66% of people develop chronic pain following abdominal surgeries such as c-sections, hysterectomies, and bowel surgeries. The visible scar may not indicate what is happening below the skin, therefore you can have a good looking scar, yet the underlying adhesions can reduce the mobility of muscles and organs leading to tightness and pain. Bowel obstruction is one of the most common complications following abdominal surgery and fertility issues have also been linked to scar adhesions. Therapeutic scar massage has been shown to be effective in reducing both acute and chronic pain following abdominal surgeries. 05.01.2022 Marks of Pride and Beauty is a wonderful initiative from the Netherlands, showcasing unique people, their journeys and their scars. It is sometimes very difficult for people to accept the scars that remain following an injury or surgery. And as much as we try to minimise scarring so they look and feel as normal as possible, they dont always go away. Accepting scars and wearing them with pride can go a long way to healing the emotional scar that can remain.

01.01.2022 Finally handed in my Doctoral Thesis!! Now I have a 2-3 month wait while it gets examined! Wish me luck! My thesis is called Mechanobiology of Scarring: using shear wave elastography to quantify scar tissue. Ive developed a new method to evaluate scar tissue so we can now begin to evaluate the effectiveness of various scar therapies in an objective and scientific manner. I was focussing on the stiffness (mechanobiology) of scars so we can develop a better understanding of how mechanical forces (stretch, pressure and shear) influence scar formation so we can optimise healing. Four and a half years in one paragraph! Haha!
