04.01.2022 Did you know that neck pressure can cause dogs to behave aggressively? Did you know that a dog receiving a correction in response to an aggressive outburst is m...ore likely to become more aggressive in the future as the direct result of the punishment. What is problematic and difficult for many people to understand is that they see a dog corrected and the undesirable behaviour stops. Looks great but unfortunately the underlying emotional response has not been addressed. The correction has only added to the negativity associated with the trigger. So its a bigger issue under the surface. Lots of people don't understand why the dog exploded after they have been "going so well". The truth is it was going well for YOU. The unwanted behaviour was suppressed and life was good. For YOU. Your dog was feeling worse and worse but wasn't allowed to react. What was going on for the dog? The majority of reactive dogs are actually fearful. So imagine feeling afraid and then getting punished by someone you trust for that. The punishment contributes to the anxiety. It makes it worse and becomes part of what the dog fears. So your dog growls and lunges when they see another dog. You pop them with a choker. They are looking at the other dog. Who do they blame for the discomfort? The other dog. Dogs make associations this way. Real behaviour change comes from dealing with the cause not putting bandaids over gaping wounds. Suppression is dangerous. Explosions don't come from nowhere. Ditch the punishment its counter productive and does not represent real behaviour modification. #dogsolutions #behaviourmodification #aggression #reactivity #modificationnotbandaids
