24.01.2022 This quite stunning card was produced during the intense industrial unrest in Brisbane during the period 1912 which "took off" when the Government of the day fo...rbade tramway workers who were union members from wearing their union badges while on duty. The police were deployed extensively to deter demonstrations and a good deal of violence followed. The image on the card first appeared in "the Worker", a strong advocate of the protesters. See more

20.01.2022 How could anyone Bear to lose our beautiful koala friends to the war, or developers, or feral dogs or ........? This great card was illustrated by Maisie Carte ...and published in 1917 during WW1 as part of a 6 card "By Gum" series. The identity of Maisie Carte appears to be something of a mystery, with some claiming it was May Gibbs incognito. See more

15.01.2022 This postcard features the Swan River in Guildford taken around 1912. It was sent to a Mr Bruce Westland Esq who managed tea plantations in what was Ceylon, now... Sri Lanka. The postcard sender is unknown but it was written aboard a ship where they stated "Our good wishes for Xmas and for 1912, so far we have had lovely weather and the ship most comfortable with good sorts of passengers." 14.01.2022 SOME DELIGHTFUL THINGS YOU DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT MAY GIBBS Did you know that May Gibbs formative years were spent in Western Australia? As a young girl May lived o...n Harvey River Station (near Bunbury) in an old convict-built homestead. Here she had "exciting encounters" with the snakes that infested the cool river banks, flowers, strange birds, insects and wildlife. She also owned a "little fat red pony" and spent days "camping and tramping" out in the hills with her brother Bertie. He would "shoot, pluck and roast the lunch", while May would set about the "more serious business of gathering flowers and information about the affairs of the bush." The family then moved by coach (and four horses) to South Perth by the Swan River. The Gibb's home 'The Dune' was on the corner of Harper Terrace and Suburban Road (now Mill Point Road). May won her first Art prize at the Perth Wild Flower Show at just aged 15. According to the newspaper at the time it was "a charming and artistic reproduction of flowers of a corn-flower blue colour" and purchased by His Excellency the Governor. When May "grew up a little" she returned to her birthplace England, to study art and the "intricacies of the pen". While she loved London, every time she returned to Australia, she realised what a "fantastic, richly original, delightfully reckless" place it was. Australia was in her blood - "If you scratch me, a strong scent of eucalyptus will fill the air." (Cecilia May Gibbs 1877 - 1969) May eventually "eloped" to Sydney aged 36, where she was quickly adopted as a "Sydney Artist". It was here that she created the Gum Nut Babies - so delicate, so exquisite, so original and uniquely Australian - inspired by the Blue Mountains and her childhood years in the bush. May lived in Neutral Bay with her "Irish husband, a pianola, a gramophone and two little black Scotch dogs". Her cottage had a "bright blue front door, shutters and windows full of Sydney Harbour". May loves included "blue and white china, Charlie Chaplin, music, sweet peas, animals, water and cottage furniture. Heysen's, Vermeer's and babies. Her few hates were "cages, oysters, Oxford pants, opera, 'going out', spelling and darning". Although she had no children of her own, May was of the opinion that Australia children were like no other in the world. "A distinct type, possessed of great ingenuity, brighter, more intelligent, independent and able to speak and think for themselves." The State Library of WA is delighted to invite you, your family and friends to the May Gibbs' Gumnut Babies Exhibition. Now on until 1 November. The exhibition is presented at the State Library of Western Australia in partnership with the 2020 AWESOME Festival and the West Australian Ballet. FREE ENTRY. 13.01.2022 This card was sent on 1 January, 1901 from Kew in Victoria to an address in Germany. It recognises the birth of the new nation of Australia on that date by com...bining together the separate colonies that existed at the time. South Australia occupies all of the central part of the continent as Northern Territory had not yet been created. One of the purposes of Federation was to remove the barriers to trade and movement between the colonies, freedoms which we have enjoyed for the last 120 years. The Covid 19 pandemic has suddenly reminded us that we a federation of states, and renewed a sentiment for the entire removal of the states, to give us two tiers of government rather than the present three. 11.01.2022 The first team leaving Geraldton for the Cue goldfields in 1892. Theres so much wonderful detail in this photo. The dogs and the children at the front, with ...one boy striking a pose. The team of men behind them, all prepared to try their luck in hope of finding gold. And behind them, the equipment piled high, with one man securing the best view right on top of the sacks. 07.01.2022 The City Archives needs your help! Within the Archives we have numerous images for which we have no description and therefore very difficult to catalogue into ...the Citys collection. These images were taken in the 1980s and all we know is that they are of Kalgoorlie and/or Boulder. We will post an image and if you could let us know where you think it might be. Does this street in the image attached look familiar? Any help to identify the location would be appreciated.

06.01.2022 A LETTER FROM F. SCOTT FITZGERALD, QUARANTINED IN 1920 IN THE SOUTH OF FRANCE DURING THE SPANISH INFLUENZA OUTBREAK. Dearest Rosemary, It was a limpid dreary day, hung as in a basket from a single dull star. I thank you for your letter. Outside, I perceive what may be a collection of fallen leaves tussling against a trash can. It rings like jazz to my ears. The streets are that empty. It seems as though the bulk of the city has retreated to their quarters, rightfully so. At t...his time, it seems very poignant to avoid all public spaces. Even the bars, as I told Hemingway, but to that he punched me in the stomach, to which I asked if he had washed his hands. He hadnt. He is much the denier, that one. Why, he considers the virus to be just influenza. Im curious of his sources. The officials have alerted us to ensure we have a months worth of necessities. Zelda and I have stocked up on red wine, whiskey, rum, vermouth, absinthe, white wine, sherry, gin, and lord, if we need it, brandy. Please pray for us. You should see the square, oh, it is terrible. I weep for the damned eventualities this future brings. The long afternoons rolling forward slowly on the ever-slick bottomless highball. Z. says its no excuse to drink, but I just cant seem to steady my hand. In the distance, from my brooding perch, the shoreline is cloaked in a dull haze where I can discern an unremitting penance that has been heading this way for a long, long while. And yet, amongst the cracked cloudline of an evenings cast, I focus on a single strain of light, calling me forth to believe in a better morrow. Faithfully yours, F. Scott Fitzgerald

04.01.2022 Finding unexpected images of East Perth turned into a curious story of a convict turned entrepreneur, which is a fairly typical rabbithole event in the heritage... world! From researching the City of Perth Mayoral annual report for 1928 came an interesting image of the gasworks in East Perth, long since demolished, with the Swan River in the distance. Then we found a new donation to the City of Perth Cultural Collections included some more images of East Perth in the 1890s, long before the industrial and residential growth of the mid twentieth century. Long before anything much there, apparently. The earlier images were published by former convict Bernard Stein, who was sentenced to ten years for larceny. After being granted a conditional pardon, he left the colony without permission; he walked to South Australia where he was apprehended and brought back to Perth, then pardoned, again. Bernard Stein set himself up in Barrack Street as a printer, bookbinder and publisher. About 1895 he produced this booklet of photographs with 19 images of Perth, all folded within, much like later sets of postcards.Naturally, the booklet included his own business premises. The area of Steins Building was later developed to become Bon Marche Arcade, and rebuilt as heritage-listed Bon Marche Stores. See more
