03.01.2022 Tomorrow’s thoroughbred meeting at Elwick has been cancelled, with the feature races to be reprogrammed as soon as practical. The decision follows an inspection... of the thoroughbred track by trainer and jockey representatives, the Tasmanian Racing Club, StrathAyr, Tasracing and the Office of Racing Integrity. While the repair work undertaken has been successful and the track could have been ready for tomorrow’s meeting, it was agreed not to proceed, taking account of the track’s long-term interests. Further, the thoroughbred meeting scheduled for 8 January will be transferred to Launceston. This will give the Elwick track until 24 January to be ready and in good condition for racing to return. Tasracing CEO Paul Eriksson said while this decision had been difficult, the track is a $12m investment in the future of Tasmanian racing and its longevity needed to be ensured. We are committed to working with StrathAyr to deliver an improved racing surface for participants and the community to enjoy, he said. StrathAyr has added additional resources and Tasracing has employed a dedicated turf manager to assist with the track’s ongoing maintenance. Tasmanian Racing Club chairman Andrew Scanlon said that the Club supports the decision to ensure the track was presented in the best condition for the remainder of the Carnival.
