25.01.2022 We loved this photo from @kai_the_kaivoodle enjoying the beach on the weekend and getting a thumbs up from our friendly Beach Education Officer. Make sure you say Hi to our officers patrolling the beach when you see them around, they might also have some goodies for your friendly pup

23.01.2022 Every day looks different for our team of Community Safety Officers who manage all aspects of animal management, parking, local By-laws as well as other seasonal requirements to help to keep everyone safe. Our Officers let us join them so we'll be sharing what the role covers over a series of posts and today we're looking at Animal Management: We had a few barking complaints this week. Usually we'll discuss the situation with the complainant and the dog owner. We don't loo...k at quick fixes (behavioural changes can be a complex process) but we'll work with the owner to help resolve the issue and to ensure the dog’s behavioural and mental needs are met. Rapid response to dog wandering at large. We receive calls at all times of the day and will use treats to encourage the dogs to come to us and into the van. We love it when we can easily identify the dog by a microchip or registration number on the tag and return them home quickly. Response to dog attacks. Not a fun part of our job but once an attack has occurred we conduct a formal investigation involving contacting the victim, talking to witnesses, identifying the dog and owner responsible and processing control orders. Dog attack investigations and resulting legal documentation can take weeks or months to finalise, depending on the case. Patrols at parks, reserves and the beach. We regularly visit our wonderful open spaces to ensure dogs and people are sharing the space comfortably and safely and we also pass on responsible dog ownership messaging where needed. Excess dog permit applications. If you decide to have more than two dogs on your property, we like to check that the property is suitable for more dogs and will chat through the dynamic of owning three dogs.

23.01.2022 Today was a hot day but expect the unexpected tomorrow with reports of possible thunder, possible rain and another very hot day. Please keep your pets cool and comfy at home and don't forget if your pet is scared of thunder to make sure they are safe and inside. For more tips see our Dog Blog www.charlessturt.sa.gov.au//pets-and-animal-/dogs/dog-blog

17.01.2022 We have received a report of possible bait being found at Fawk Reserve, Athol Park. While we are currently investigating the matter and monitoring the area, we ask that you please be vigilant when taking your dog for a walk. If you think your dog may have ingested an unknown food or substance please take them to the vet. If you notice anything suspicious, you can call us anytime on 8408 1111. We have a dedicated after-hours Rapid Response team who will follow it up.

17.01.2022 We've had a few questions lately around the use of retractable leads. In SA, leads (including retractable/extender leads) cannot exceed 2m in length in areas where dogs must be on a lead (eg. all public footpaths, within 5m of a playground, Henley Square, Coast Park or the foreshore between 10am and 8pm during daylight savings). While retractable leads may appear to be a good option for walking your pup, there are numerous safety issues that should be considered prior to purchasing or continuing to using these leads. You'll find everything you need to know on our Dog Blog www.charlessturt.sa.gov.au//retractable-leads-and-why-they

15.01.2022 We don't usually post 'lost pets' but this little guy needs a little extra help in getting home. Lost a budgie? A lovely resident has taken care of this beautiful budgie who had happily flown into her garden. If you think this may be your pet please contact the Seaton Vet who is currently looking after him.

15.01.2022 With hot days slowly increasing it's important to remember that your furry friends can miss that walk and enjoy a day at home. Here are some tips on keeping your doggie cool and happy! Share any tips of your own on how you keep your pets cool in the comments.... Remember that brachycephalic dogs (short nosed breeds like Pugs, Boxers, Shih Tzus, Staffies, Cavalier King Charles, Bulldogs and more) are more prone to overheating than other breeds. If you have one of these dogs, please take extra precautions to keep them cool. Schedule walks or playtime for early morning or late evening when it’s cooler. If the ground feels too hot to touch, it’s too hot for your dog’s paws! If possible, keep your dog inside on hot days. If not, make sure they have a space that’s cool, shady and well ventilated with access to fresh, clean water. Fill a few bowls or buckets in case one gets tipped over. A small paddle pool shallow filled with water could help your dog cool down or give him extra water to drink on a hot day. If you’re home during the day, add some ice blocks to your dog’s water regularly. Fill an empty ice cream container with water, drop some dog treats in and freeze it. Tip the ice block out for your dog on a hot day and he’ll love you for it. 07.01.2022 Thinking of getting a puppy this Christmas?

04.01.2022 Daily walks are not the only way to keep your dog entertained. Spending time together, getting to know them and offering mental enrichment can be very rewarding for you and your pet. Here are some ideas of activities you can do with your pet while you stay safe at home! Fill an empty ice cream container with water, drop some dog treats in and freeze it. Tip the ice block out for your dog on a hot day and he’ll love you for it.... Try making your own enrichment ideas like rolling up a mat with treats in it and help your dog find a way to unroll it or DIY lick mat by spreading a thin layer of peanut butter (make sure it's xylitol free) on a cutting board and freeze it. Silicone baking sheets make great lick mats due to their texture and can be tossed in the dishwasher for easy cleaning. Even ice cube trays with a non-porous and non-abrasive surface can work. Indoor agility with general household objects this can get tricky so make sure your dog is comfortable and enjoying the activity. Make food time into a game; try a food scatter or use food dispensing toys. Rotate toys daily so they think they’ve got a whole new one to play with! See more

02.01.2022 We all want to have our best friend with us as much as possible, but when riding your bike please remember that the safest way to travel with your dog is with a dog safe trailer (if they are happy and comfortable to go in one) . Riding your bike with your dog on a lead, or another leading device is not only unsafe but is also against the law. For more information, take a read of Cycling & The Law (see page 12) https://www.sa.gov.au//DPTI-Cycling-and-the-Law-Booklet.pd
