21.01.2022 Home State Heroes This month, our charity PETstock Assist is celebrating and supporting organisations that help people and pets in their communities. Pets Of The Homeless - Victoria ... This is Cory and Kings story. Cory learned long ago not to rely on anybody but himself. With no family and few friends, he had no support network, no safety net, and nobody to lean on when it all got too much. That was until he met King, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Cory has done it tough his entire life. He never knew his birth family hes still searching for them to this day and ran away from foster care at just 14 after being abused. He has been homeless - on and off - for 30 years. Cory was sleeping rough on the streets of Melbourne before moving into public housing after 15 years on the waiting list. Just like Cory, King had a rocky start to life. Cory took the little dog in when an acquaintance could no longer look after him. Their bond was instant. When he arrived, Kings fur was completely matted, and he could hardly walk. He was miserable and found it hard to trust. Cory knew the feeling. After becoming each others best friend, it was found that King had degenerative problems in his knee. It required surgery and appointments that Corey could not afford - so this is where Pets Of The Homeless Australia stepped in to help. Pets Of The Homeless, with the help of its generous community of supporters, funded the operation for King to have a double knee reconstruction. King is now living an active, pain-free life alongside his best friend in the world, and Cory now knows what its like when somebody has your back. 10.01.2022 Home State Heroes Safe Pets Safe Families - South Australia This is Ambers story. *Warning* This story details abuse and wont be suitable for all audiences.... "I wouldnt be alive today if it wasnt for my dogs and my dogs would not be alive if it was not for Safe Pets Safe Families," - Amber. Like many Australians, Amber has experienced an abusive relationship which began as small incidents but escalated into life threatening situations. Her partner abused her, threatened her and the safety of her loved ones, including her dogs Ruby, Red and Rufus. "My dogs had been confined to the back garden and were not allowed inside when my partner was home. At the end of June 2017, I left, but I was not able to take Rufus, Ruby or Red. The next few months resulted in apologetic messages, abusive phone calls and threats towards Rufus, Ruby and Red. Each day, I was putting myself back in danger to go to the house whilst he wasnt there to feed them, they were the last link to me being free from him. I was at breaking point, but I couldnt leave my dogs. Financially, I couldnt put my dogs in boarding and the shelters couldnt offer me any long term stays. I was forced to re-home Red and thought I would never see her again; but at least she was safe." With the help of Safe Pets Safe Families - Keeping people & pets together, Amber was reunited with Ruby and Rufus, after they received some much needed respite. Without an organisation like this, many people trapped in abusive relationships will struggle to keep not only themselves safe, but also their pets. 10.01.2022 Home State Heroes Smart Pups Assistance Dogs - Queensland This is Kieran and Yogis story.... "He was our happiest hello, and our hardest goodbyebut will be forever in our hearts," - Sandra, Kierans mother. Kieran has two rare chromosome disorders and has autism. He has very little verbal language, extremely poor functioning skills and everything is very much a challenge. "Once Yogi Bear arrived, things happened quite instantly, much to our surprise. Kieran held the short lead, there was no need to use the harness, and people started to smile at us something we certainly werent used to! What really surprised us in the first ten months was that Kieran never ran off nor did he have a meltdown while out in public! We could go to the shops frequently, go for walks along the beach and Kieran made no attempt to run into the water. We could enjoy meals out together again, his behaviour improved at school and hospital visits became a breeze even the doctors were amazed!" Yogi Bear changed Kierans life. Unfortunately, less than two years after becoming part of the family, Yogi Bear became ill with cancer and recently passed away at the very young age of three. Although a short life, it was meaningful and full of love, right until the end. "On Yogis final days, Kieran knew it was his turn to be there for Yogi Bear. While we sat in a park to say goodbye, Kieran sat ever so still with Yogi Bears head in his lap. He gently patted, smiled and looked at Yogi Bear in a way which said that everything was going to be okay. Kieran showed strength, empathy and resilience we never thought imaginable. And when the time came to let Yogi Bear go, Kieran was calm, understanding and brave. 02.01.2022 Meet Frankie, the parrot. This little guy came into PETstock VET North Lakes with a painful, swollen foot. Through a quick investigation it was found that the source of swelling was due to a tight leg band, that was cutting off his circulation. Side note: Leg bands are often applied by breeders to identify chicks, but as the bird grows, the band can become dangerously tight. If not addressed early, birds can lose their feet. In this case, it was a smooth process of removing the band with a surgical drill, leaving Frankie much happier.
