21.01.2022 Our Penguin Research Officers are seeing an increase of chicks throughout the colony, which is a wonderful sign for this year's breeding season! These chicks wi...ll spend roughly 8-10 weeks inside their parents' burrows before heading out to sea by themselves to face the open ocean and all it has to offer them. P.s. Who thinks Meagan and Jordan have the best job ever?

20.01.2022 It is with a heavy heart that we write today to let everyone know that after 14 consecutive years of our much loved annual not-for-profit Dreamnight at the Zoo ...event we will be cancelling the event this year due to covid-19. As this night is for children with a life threatening illness or special needs, we often have many children who are already immuno-compromised attending, so it is the safest and wisest thing to do and state restrictions are unlikely to allow large gatherings even by November. Instead we encourage you all to follow our page and especially our Friday Feeding live events where we can at least bring a little bit of the animals to you in your own home and this Friday we will be feeding the Tasmanian Devils. And most of all - keep dreaming ! See more

14.01.2022 This year's #nationalscienceweek celebrates the future of our oceans. We care about our ocean shores and are using science to bring us closer to understanding a...nd protecting Phillip Islands threatened shorebirds such as Hooded Plovers. Last year, the Nature Parks Nesting Shorebird Officer, Mitch Burrows monitored 19 breeding pairs noting 90 eggs across 41 nests. 24 chicks hatched and 9 chicks survived to fledge - which is 0.47 per pair. Science tells us this is within the desirable range (0.450.50) for a sustainable population. Thanks, science! Head to our website to read the full Nesting Shorebird Report and other science & conservation updates: https://bit.ly/3jgIGEb

12.01.2022 Another coincidental occurrence of #nationalscienceweek is the imminent arrival of Short-tailed Shearwaters to Phillip Island from waters around Alaska. Their n...ow well-known migration is another mystery that was solved by science! The light-bulb moment came thanks to a breeding adult bird banded on Phillip Island in April 1963 - when the same bird was recovered at Port Haiden, Alaska on 28 July 1965, their mystery disappearance each year was solved. Last year, the birds arrived a lot later than usual to the colonies and Nature Parks Researcher Dr Duncan Sutherland is looking forward to recovering geo-locator trackers to discover more about these globetrotting birds. Thanks, science! Test your knowledge: Can you differentiate the Short-Tailed Shearwater call from the Little Penguins? Listen to this audio track and let us know: https://bit.ly/2Ehqjzz (We'll give you a hint, shearwaters make a bit of a cackling sound!)

10.01.2022 Will you be my breeding partner this year? Phillip Island's Little Penguins have begun pairing up with their breeding partners and readying their burrows for... egg-laying and chick-rearing. We've seen lots of early breeding behaviours lately which is a great sign that this years breeding season will be a successful one! Thanks to our research assistant and livestream host, Jordan, for snapping this rare photo of penguins posing for the camera during her recent burrow checks #littlepenguins #phillipislandnp

03.01.2022 Happy Fathers Day! Did you know Little Penguins co-parent? This means all egg sitting and chick rearing duties are shared equally between breeding pairs, with ...one partner venturing out to sea to catch fish while the other stays home in the burrow (then they swap) during the initial weeks. At the moment, Phillip Islands penguin parents are preparing their burrows for the arrival of this seasons chicks. Some early pairs have already had their eggs hatch!
