25.01.2022 Girls on the Avenue - PlanBeat - Wassail WineBar 30/8/20

24.01.2022 What a night last night at the Gaslight celebrating the birthday of Chris Kingate. Joined by great mate Mark Pedler on stage.

23.01.2022 Been a while since we posted something from the vault. This one, not that old, at rehearsal for a SupportAct appearance early 2019 which acknowledged the 10th anniversary of the passing of John Vincent. In his honour we did a couple of his standards including this one "Take Me Back to Innaminka" - joined by original participant in Vinnie's recordings Wally Michaels

19.01.2022 Once again from the vault! Back in about '78 we (3/4 of PlanBeat - known then as Vancouver) went into the 5KA 43 Franklin Street production studio 1 to record some stuff. This would be different, a live session shot to video as well. Video cameras were rare as rare then. I borrowed the one for this from Catholic Radio & Television via a contact I had at the time. Video recorders were not around as well but I was an early adopter, buying a 3/4" U-matic machine that year. Those... machines took massive tapes that only held 1 hour. Stereo VHS machines were years away but U-matic recorders were natively stereo. So it was decided to capture this whole thing on tape and on stereo U-matic video by a camera which at the time was state of the art for a hand held but incredibly crappy by today's standards. To make the pictures worse we decided to mood the place up a bit running just the installed studio portafloods and switching off the blinding fluros. Peter Robins was our camera guy that day and he did lights at our gigs with his 4 portafloods and a wooden box with 4 switches. Peter later stood for Family First in Parliament but since then we have lost contact. The afternoon was miked and mixed (set mix as I was playing drums) through an Optro 8 channel mixer straight to the video machine. If I remember correctly the audio input was via a round din plug so bit of cobbling was involved there. So we mucked about for a couple of hours and captured the lot. Here is a live original (I have posted another studio version before) written and sung by Phil Sykes, and featuring Shane Carter, Wally Michaels & Greg Clark. "Dance the Night Away" - nicely sung Phil, who could'nt crack a smile til the end. Shane on his CBS Les Paul, with beloved Fender Twin Reverb he wishes he never parted with and Phil on junior Fender Bass, Wally on his Ibanez Les Paul & me on the same drums I still pound. (PS The ladies who feature? Phil's gal of the time Marie, and Shane's future first wife Debbie.) See more

17.01.2022 From the Archives. "I love to work at nothin' all day" Well isn't that apt? Again 3/4 of PlanBeat back in 2007. Greg Clark & Phil Sykes in the lounge room of Shane Carter doing the Bachman Turner Overdrive classic unplugged.

13.01.2022 Wow is it Sunday already!!!!! Here we go again! Make sure you to book. (Or rock up and pay today) Don't miss out!

09.01.2022 Anyone with a musical bent has done one of these lately. But ours is a bit different. This performance was cobbled together from 5 seperate performances recorded at 5 different times in 5 different locations and no one heard anything the other did. Everybody simply played along to a generic midi bed. I, (Greg) received all the files and compiled the recording and then the clip. I could have cheated and played along with the rest of the lads but I did mine the same way and eve...n sang the harmony line in the last verse to myself on my own. So to say it's rough around the edges is not a stretch. I was curious as to whether it could be done this way. A big shout out to a mate who helped out here, the evergreen and ever up for it Richard E. Phillips on piano. Take this in the spirit is meant, in times of adversity, why not make something in adverse conditions! Phone sound, spare rooms, everything is here. We wanted to give everyone a bit of a sing so this The Band song - "The Weight" See more

04.01.2022 Do you remember the days when there was live music that you could leave your house to witness? Hard to believe that was barely 2 weeks ago. On the night of the 14th we were all discussing & practicing this brand new thing called "Social Distancing". 2 weeks on it's all we know. Anyway, for those who couldn't make the gig here's one we learnt that week, playing it for the first time that night. A current hit for Post Malone, the song Circles. Bit warbly, but not too foul.

01.01.2022 From the Archive! This one goes back away to round 2009 or 2010. PlanBeat wasn't a thing as yet. In fact musical gatherings for us were a rarity. Even grey hairs were more of a rarity! We (Phil Sykes, Shane Carter & Greg Clark) jammed in the front room of friend Jeff Golin at Semaphore. This video would hold interest for Jeff & Theresa as that home has since been demolished to make way for parking lot. (cue Joni Mitchell) A few were bashed out that day including this one with no bashing involved at all. One of my all time favourite Beatles songs, For No One. Once apon a time my pitchiness would have me hide this sort of thing. But I'm now too old to care. It's just a beautiful song. Not my drum kit. It belonged to one of Jeff's sons. P.S. I love the accidental framing of the guys in the mirror above the fireplace.

01.01.2022 Wow, long time, no do anything! Well we are back and into it. Albeit with a different time slot. Wassail have scaled back their number of musical events per week until the Covid operational landscape gets a little easier. So, that said, fancy an afternoon of upbeat tunes? Couple it with some damn fine wines or nifty beers and you have Wassail on a Sunday arvo. See you guys on the 26th!
