25.01.2022 A quick clip about Phoenix Pilates
24.01.2022 5 years ago Phoenix Pilates was born. In the dark night hours between night waking with my first child. I was struck by how many reincarnations my body had been through. How many different forms we transition through. Baby, toddler, child, teen, maiden, mother and so on. Through the cycles then need for different kinds of movement and nutrition. Each transaction brings pain, discovery, power, decline. I hope everyone is creating space for the transition COVID 19 brings us. Y...ou cant force it, sweat it out, its a wave we cant control. My focus for the past week has been the first principle of Pilates, breath. I encourage you not to rush or force a new routine onto yourself in such an unnatural world. Rather let the routine reveal itself, its there you just have to create space. We know how important movement is. Roll your ankles when your sitting on the couch, roll your shoulders while your cooking, slip in a spine twist while your watching tv. Take your shoes off when you walk, slow down and observe your hip, knee, ankle, foot alignment. Run up the hill, let the air suck into the low lobes of your lungs. Delicious. Looking forward to sharing my thoughts on functional movement, how our culture influences how we move. Pilates is a mindset, may your spine be as stable and flexible as your mind. X See more
23.01.2022 Sticky sock ready!
23.01.2022 Fill up your cup. Hey there, here is your gentle reminder to make sure you direct some of that outward flowing energy back in. It’s been a full year. I can’t help but think there is a strange rush to the end of it. As I write this I think about the expression take some time for yourself it always leaves me feeling as though I am taking that time from something else, carving out some time in my life to spend on my well-being. It’s silly it’s not an expression that teaches ...us to be considerate about our own well-being. Where can you drive the when the tank is empty, not even empty just not full enough to get to the fun place... You need your body. Your family need your body, your friends, your work, your community need you to look after your body. Your body needs rest, movement, nourishment, stimulation and pleasure to be healthy. So Just do that. Like all the time. Or at least take lots of little breaks to do that. Disclaimer your body IS your mind. There doesn’t need to be a mind body connection moment. Like it or not they are connected and holding a big old mirror up to each other.... love you. See more

19.01.2022 On Monday, its admin day! I cant sit at the desk. Why when you can do Pilates and emails at the same time!
19.01.2022 How qualified should your Pilates teacher be? It depends... Do you want a gym class or a Pilates lesson. I not judging you, but.. IF you want a quality session find a qualified Pilates teacher who has a Diploma in Pilates. Thats a full time course load for 1 year and 600-700 clinic hrs. Usually they take on some kind of apprenticeship afterwards with a Principal Pilates teacher or Physio and learn a bunch more for a bunch more years. If you really want to do Pilates, do it with a qualified teacher. A 2 day course is not a qualification... It's a 2 day course.

15.01.2022 First steps of barefoot walking!
14.01.2022 A nice way to mobilise your hips and get some gentle lumbar spine rotation.
14.01.2022 As I slowly shift gears towards the hope of opening the studio again I have been thinking about how much I touch people when I teach. The profound effects of touch or lack of is amazing. I need to say I am NOT advocating touch in these times by just anyone... but maybe give your partner or kids an extra long hug tonight after reading this. A while back I ran a course on the power of touch for Pilates teachers. I would like to share the 4 less obvious take aways. The obvious o...ne being our clinical hands help you activate and de activate muscles. 1. Generates trust (only from experienced clinical hands) touch activates the brains orbitofrontal cortex, linked to feelings of reward and compassion. Studies show that a simple touch can trigger release of oxytocin, aka the love hormone. Yes please more love! 2. Boosts immunity. The study, led by Sheldon Cohen, Professor of Psychology at CMU, published in Psychological Science. Found that people who had greater social support and experienced more hugs were more protected from stress and stress-related infections. And those who did get sick but also experienced more hugs, experienced less severe symptoms. 3. Learning engagement. French psychologist Nicolas Guguen reports that when teachers pat students in a friendly way, those students are three times as likely to ask questions in class. 4. Community. Touch signals safety and trust; it soothes. Basic warm touch calms cardiovascular stress. It activates the bodys vagus nerve, which is intimately involved with our compassionate response. Now I am off to learn about all the benefits of not touching while teaching Pilates... Independent learning?!... Using imagination?!....

08.01.2022 FROZEN shoulder... Let it go, let it go!... I have a thing for shoulders at the moment and low and behold I have seen 3 frozen shoulders this week. In the biz of bodies we call it adhesive capsulitis, I have heard in Japan its called fifties shoulder as it so common in women in mid life or menopause, when we start to lose the inflammation-dampening benefits of estrogen ($%*@ you menopause) I have often wondered if it becomes the emotional crescendo of our lives too. Decades ...of emotional tension in our upper shoulder and neck creating a freaked out holding pattern combined with a hormonal change then bingo.... There are commonly 3 stages... Pain. Freezing. Thawing... The thawing part is all dependant on when you catch the pain/freezing part. I have seen women in the freeze thaw cycle for 6 months- 3 years... so so many factors. The more Pilates and movement the faster the thaw (usually) The first step as with all injuries is to head to your trusted Physio. To me my Physios are important as my family G.P. If you dont have one I can point you in the right direction. So we need our Physio to diagnose this little sucker and make sure its not something else like a rotator cuff injury. From there we can all work together to make sure you hit the thawing stage fast. We are here for you for all of your movement needs through all of the seasons :) See more
07.01.2022 SPRING!! Clean up time. Joseph Pilates referred to Pilates as an internal shower. Pilates influences our entire system. Lymphatic, cardiovascular, neurological, muscles, bones and all the bits in between. I spend most of my time teaching, I rarely talk about my personal relationship with Pilates. It sweeps through me and leaves me feeling energised, and balanced. For me pilates has become a way to check in and focus on my needs physically and emotionally. Its not always abo...ut feeling the burn (sometimes it is and thats awesome!) sometimes its just about maintaining mobility and enjoying moving with the equipment. I love how Pilates has taught me to take my time with recovery, to trust in the method as it sees me though every time, to breathe, to move from a place of love, to lean into feeling strong when I have the energy and to embrace simplicity of movement when I need to. I bloody love it. I want you to feel it too. Teaching people to move to their own internal rhythm is one of my greatest joys in life. See more

04.01.2022 We have a handful of spaces left on Wednesdays with THIS beautiful woman. I have always held tightly to the fact that we have some of the best Pilates teachers around and I am really excited to see how our Wednesday clients grow. . Pilates gives you something you didnt think you needed until you do. Eliza grew up dancing from the age of 6 and went on to many intensive courses and holds a Bachelor of Arts: Dance from WAAPA. Dancing taught Eliza many things, but most import...antly it bought her to pilates. With injuries and hyper-mobility Pilates taught Eliza to build strength and control. Being such a gentle and precise way to work with the body, it gives the chance for the individual to tap into their mind/body connection. Eliza holds a Diploma in Studio Pilates:Tensegrity, Bachelor of Arts: Dance and is currently studying yoga. She is the movement trifactor! Eliza cannot wait to get to know you. 02.01.2022 Connecting breath to movement is one of the first principles of Pilates. As a first step we use breath to facilitate movement consistently and consciously coupled to specific movement. Then after time your breath re aligns with movement the way nature intended, naturally without conscious thought. Through these crazy times I have had to come back to basics for breath to re connect, re direct steer my body back home.
02.01.2022 Wow! Look at these blooms Creating a space to relax and feel calm in helps facilitate positive movement! YES!
01.01.2022 How does stress effect how you eat? Well this has been interesting for me. In the beginning I leant hard into nutrient dense food, every meal packed a punch. Then stress set in... more chocolate than organic chicken and lots of sitting. The last 2 weeks we have been making our way out. Stress changes the microbiome of your gut. Thats ok. It fluctuates, its how your find your way out that counts. It seems to me there is a new way forward one thats not trying to go back to a healthier younger body but moving forward towards ourselves a stronger, more resilient and skilled self. Organic bone broth is wonderful. Its comforting in all the right ways. I invite you to discover slowly who you would like to move toward become more of.

01.01.2022 Teacher training IN PERSON this weekend! Thank you COVID for letting us be humans!
01.01.2022 Often people ask me about Reformer Pilates. The Reformer is kind of the front man /woman of the band. (Robert Plant to Led Zeppelin kind of magic) but without the rest of the band the music just doesnt make sense. Some of Pilates unsung heros yes Im referring to the base and drums. The spine corrector and the Wunda chair. Without these two there is no time keeping, no centre of the Pilates band!
01.01.2022 Its the weeeeekend!
