21.01.2022 HOW SURGICAL PATIENTS ARE MANAGED IN AUSTRALIA A fantastic article about how abdominal surgery is managed in Australia. The paper is written by A/Prof Shane Patman, the Chair of the APC Board. 20.01.2022 Physiotherapy following abdominal surgery may seem like a straight forward decision of deep breathing, supporting coughing and mobilisation. When things go according to plan, it often is. BUT the key to successful management is understanding the effects of a general anaesthetic on the respiratory system, the risk of post-operative pulmonary complications for each patient you treat, and how to deal with the situation when complications arise. This book chapter by colleagues i...n Australia gives great insights into Physio management. https://researchmgt.monash.edu//p/25140081/16981452_oa.pdf If you want support to apply theory to practice, come along to our online cardio workshop next weekend! We will explore the management of a women day two following a laparotomy and discuss how her medical complications are influencing the treatment plan. 13.01.2022 QUICK TIP 1 Understanding normal biomechanics is critical to determining motor control dysfunction following stroke. Knowing normal helps you determine abnormal. Once you can see the deviation from normal, you can work through what impairments are leading to the functional decline and then work out how best to treat in a functional way to improve motor control. Rolling, sitting, sit to stand, walking, stair climbing and reach to grasp - know what normal looks like!

12.01.2022 Do you develop prioritised problem lists to inform your clinical management? Last week we hosted a series of online case discussion sessions to help candidates prepare for upcoming APC clinical and simulation assessments. We reviewed a musculoskeletal clinical scenario, designed an assessment, and interpreted simulated assessment findings (similar to APC simulation scenarios) to develop a prioritised problem list and treatment plan.... At the end of this session, confidence to assess and treat a musculoskeletal client had improved to 10/10! We are hosting similar sessions in neurological and cardiorespiratory practice. Visit our website or PM us for more information and to book!

12.01.2022 As lockdown progresses here in Melbourne, Shane and I find ourselves missing the opportunity to connect with everyone. I was lucky to run a mentor session last week and it was great to spend time discussing the stroke case and exploring treatment options. Shane and I would like to offer to the PEA crew some small group sessions of case based learning. These will run in September. Week 1 - 7th - 9th Sept - Musc Lower Back Pain... Week 2 - 14th - 16th Sept - Cardio COPD exacerbation Week 3 - 21st - 23rd Sept - Neuro Stroke *Dates amended 17/8/20 Each week will have three sessions Session 1 - Case overview (7.30-9pm) Session 2 - Assessment (7.30-8.30pm) Session 3 - Management plan (7.30-8.30pm) The sessions will explore medical records, assessment findings, prioritised problem lists, management plans, re-assessment and discharge planning. The groups will be very small (limited to three people) to make sure there is lots of discussion about how to manage the case. Clinical reasoning is the main focus. Cost will be $220 including GST for each week you attend. You can come to just one week or all three. All sessions will be run by Shane or Felicity (me!). All sessions will run, even if only one person books in - we really want to see you all (online) again!! If you are interested, please email us at [email protected]. First in will get the spots!

12.01.2022 Hello Everyone! We have been a little quiet here on Facebook for the last few weeks as we work out what we will be doing to support everyone with their exam preparation. Shane and I are both based in Melbourne, and as I am sure you are aware, also now dealing with the challenge of a repeat lockdown and stay at home orders. We hope to get everything back up and running to time with the APC restarting exams, as soon as that is possible. We continue to be in contact with them ...to make sure that we have up to date information to support our decision making. While we wait for the situation in Melbourne to settle we will continue to offer online mentoring as one to one with Shane, Maxine or I, for those who are interested. We will also post some useful resources over the next few weeks to help keep your preparation moving forward. Stay safe everyone and we look forward to seeing you online or in person again very soon!! Felicity and Shane

Send us an email at [email protected] if you would like to join us to get yourself back into the swing of preparing for your clinical exam.

08.01.2022 Great news this afternoon!!

07.01.2022 Know your assessment criteria!! As we creep closer to APC simulation exams starting up again, I thought I would remind everyone how important it is to go into an assessment knowing what you are being assessed against. There are two key documents to make sure you have read before going into your assessments. The first is the Thresholds of Physiotherapy Practice. These are the minimum standards. Read over and think about how you might demonstrate these in your assessment. http...s://www.physiotherapyboard.gov.au/documen/default.aspx The other document is the APC assessment guidelines. Most importantly the pages that provide you the assessment form (page 11 onwards). Again, think about how you would show these points to an examiner. How will you show you know the latest level 1 evidence for best practice? What does it mean to be safe in transferring a patient? How do you demonstrate your clinical reasoning? https://physiocouncil.com.au//Clinical-Assessment-Informat Post any questions in the comments if you would like Shane or I to support you in understanding these important documents and how to show your best in the assessment.

07.01.2022 To end our week with something different, innovation is one thing that is a positive to the COVID-19 lockdowns around the world. People are always inventive in challenging times. Virtual Physio in 2020..... what will Physio 2050 look like?

06.01.2022 The Australian Physiotherapy Association has some great freely available resources for evidence based Physiotherapy practice (which can help with preparing for your exams). This podcast by Dr Natalie Fini is a great listen about physical activity and stroke. https://australian.physio//talking-golden-ticket-exercise-

01.01.2022 FACE TO FACE + ONLINE SIMULATION COURSES UPDATE - 30 APRIL 2021 Both face-to-face AND online simulation courses are continuing in 2021. Dates and details are available on our website. Unfortunately, the APC has indefinitely denied us access to the Simulation Lab, while they work through a backlog of Clinical Assessments. ... Therefore, we have sourced an alternate clinical space to hold our face-to-face courses: Advance Healthcare Dandenong https://www.advancehealthcare.com.au/dandenong This clinic (it's where Shane currently works!) has a fully equipped exercise gym, 6x clinical rooms, and equipment that is identical to that found in the APC Simulation Lab. We are really excited to host our courses here! Please message us if you have any questions, and we wish those who have upcoming assessments the very best for the coming weeks! ~ Shane & Felicity

01.01.2022 Finding treatment options through Google does not look like the best way to go! This interesting piece published in the UK highlights that a significant proportion of YouTube education videos do not provide evidence based practice recommendations. Come along to our Online Simulation Musc Workshop to work through what are the best Physio treatment options for supporting a patient to manage LBP Our next online course starts on the 19th Oct. BOOK IN THROUGH OUR WEBSITE... https://www.physioeducation.com.au/online-courses.html See you there!! Felicity and Shane https://www.dailymail.co.uk//Physiotherapists-warn-public-

01.01.2022 Hi all, Shane here. How confident are you at prescribing individualised exercise programs for people with shoulder pain? In Australian musculoskeletal physiotherapy (especially in APC Simulation Clinical Assessments), it's important to not follow a "recipe" approach for exercise prescription. This recent scoping review by Boland et al (2021) summarises some current ideas about how we rehabilitate rotator-cuff related disorders. ... Three (3) key messages that stand out to me are: - "Programs should be individualised and progressive" - "Supervised or home-based exercises are equally effective" - "Optimal parameters for these exercises remain unclear" It is therefore important for exercises to be targeted at an individual's participation restrictions, activity limitations, and impairments in body structure and function. Dosage should be individual, and based on that person's goals, abilities, tolerances, and preferences. If you'd like to practice these clinical reasoning skills, and build your confidence for your upcoming Musculoskeletal Clinical Assessment, you can join us at our next Musculoskeletal (shoulder) online simulation course running 10-12 May in the evenings. For more info and to book, visit https://www.physioeducation.com.au/online-courses.html or send us a DM. Reference: Boland K, Smith C, Bond H, Briggs S, Walton, J. (2021).
