17.01.2022 ACL INJURY watched any of the Womens AFL this year? Or maybe you are a female athlete yourself? Yeaaaah girl!! or maybe you are the proud parent of one? #goteam did you know women are 2-4 times more likely to rupture their ACL?! Experts say it comes down to two main things: 1 Anatomy and 2 behaviour. 1. ANATOMY - Females have hips that are wider (to grow and deliver babies) than men. This means their femurs (thigh bone) therefore travel at a different angle to... meet the knee (Q angle). This changes the stability of the knee. - the shape of the knee joint is different in females and there is physically less space for ligaments, meaning ACLs are smaller in size in women (intercondylar notch size). - the other big is hormonal differences. We know that women might be at higher risk of injury at different times of the month, but unfortunately women are majorly underrepresented in clinical reviews. Watch this space!! 2. BEHAVIOUR: - it is common in Australian society that when girls mature to around 13/14 years old, they withdraw from every day sport, whereas males continue to play sport at lunchtime. Now, this isnt true for everyone!! But it means that at a crucial time of ligamentous development AND a time when kids learn to jump, land and fall, a lot of females miss out. They become adults (where it is cool to play sport again ) and dont have the lived experience of how to land on their feet as well as their male counterparts. - there is less money in elite female sport! There just is it meant until recently that women didnt get the same resources as men to play at their best. Now with the amazing flood of women into the limelight it also means that we are expecting the form that mens sport displays, but with absolutely 0 years of athlete development behind the scenes. This means a lot of risking it for the biscuit and not enough long-term progressive overload which would make female athletes more resilient to injury. TAKEAWAY COMMENTS: - lets focus on what we can change!! And that is STRENGTH CONTROL ENDURANCE & MOBILITY (especially at the foot, ankle and hip). THE MOST COMMON injury to an ACL is a *non contact* twist!! SO work on those agility skills! Work on your ball skills! Be skilled and strong and safe See more

Often the complaint of low back pain is being driven by a dysfunction elsewhere in the body Here Matt uses the example of the hips & their inability to actively extend!
