21.01.2022 So, you have an injury and not sure what you have done... BUT you know you should see a physio about it. BUT, you are thinking that you have to get a scan done first!!! STOP - You'd do not always need a scan straight away! A scan such as an X-ray, Ultrasound or MRI can be of value with regards to diagnostics but we urge patients not to wait to get a scan before seeing a Physio. It is better to see a physio immediately to start the rehab process to ensure a quick and speedy re...covery. Physiotherapists are trained to perform clinical diagnostics tests and perform comprehensive assessments that will most likely hone down on the structure at fault. This will allow physio to implement appropriate rehab and treatment regimes. If the physio deems your injury requires further investigation they can refer you to get a scan. If you have any questions about your injury or whether you need a scan. 14.01.2022 Injuries are common in younger age groups. This is due to their bodies changing and growing which causes them to be less coordinated. A reduction in coordination leads to a reduced reaction time. As children grow, more force is involved and therefore if a child is going through a growth spurt the potential for injury increases. In an adult, our bodies need to recover from simply the activity we performed. Whereas in a child their bodies need to recover from both the act...ivity they performed and the lengthening of bones and connective tissue as a result of their growing. If your child has had a recent growth spurt and is complaining of pain or discomfort pre, during or post exercise make sure you take them to see a qualified physiotherapist for an assessment and appropriate management plan. #physioward #physiotherapy See more

13.01.2022 Were down at the @newportjuniorrugby Summer 7s today and ITS HOT!! Coming into summer and all the summer sports its so important to ensure youre getting your fluids in! According to @sports_medicine_australia... Substantial amounts of water are lost through sweating when exercising vigorously in the heat. During strenuous exercise sports people often replace only half their sweat losses. To minimise dehydration, drink about two cups of water in the 2 hours before exercising. During exercise lasting 60 minutes or longer, 2-3 cups (500-750 ml) of cool water or sports drink per hour are sufficient for most sports. See more

11.01.2022 You can smell it in the air, summer is so close and so is the urge to jump in the ocean and go for a swim, maybe even have a go at an open water swim race. Swimming like any other activity is a skill and knowing how to gradually build up to avoid injury is super important. Having that balance between mobility and stability through your shoulder, thoracic and even pelvis is a great way to start and our physios can help you address this! 3 key areas you can target now are... - Shoulder joint internal rotation: Stretching through the back of shoulder or getting a trigger ball into this area - Thoracic spine extension: Lying over a foam roller or rolled up towel and doing snow angel arms - Hip flexor length: Kneeling stretch to open up the front of your hip For further information, dive on in with one of our physios who can help establish a tailored program to keep you in the water! 11.01.2022 Unsure if your injury or niggling pain is appropriate for physio? Burning desire to know what you could do about stretching or recovery? Just want to have a chat? Comment below, we would love to hear your questions

10.01.2022 With winter sports well upon us a common injury seen with contact sports such as rugby union or rugby league is a shoulder dislocation. What is it? Our shoulder is known as a ball and socket joint with the arm being the ball and the shoulder the socket. A shoulder dislocation occurs when the ball slips out of the socket. ... How Does it Happen? Any number of positions and forces can cause a shoulder to dislocate, however the most common position for the shoulder to dislocate is when the arm is out to the side and above shoulder height. Usually it involves a blunt force from the back causing the arm to pop forward. Very occasionally shoulders can also dislocate backwards when the forces comes from falling onto an outstretched arm or point of the elbow What Next? Dislocated shoulders are usually excruciatingly painful at the time but once the shoulder is relocated this initial pain settles down almost immediately. The following couple of weeks will be quite achy and sore and use of a sling may be required. An initial x-ray is always advised to check for structural integrity of the joint. How Can Physio Help? Following a dislocation, rehabilitation is extremely important. A rough time period of 6-12 weeks for return to normal activities is expected however more traumatic dislocations that cause more extensive damage to the shoulder can take upwards of 3 months. Unfortunately, the recurrence rate of a dislocation is quite high so it is imperative you follow a structured rehabilitation program that should include: - Restoring normal range of motion - Guided program to activate and strengthen shoulder stabilisers as well as other muscles around the shoulder - Establish functional exercises that target the demands of your sport - Return to sport testing including return to contact readiness If you or someone you know has suffered a shoulder dislocation make sure you book in with one of our expert physios!! You can book online (www.physioward.com.au/book-now/) or by calling the either clinic on 9913 2632 or 9979 5291 #physioward #northernbeachesphysio #narrabeenphysio #newportphysio #shoulderdislocation #dislocatedshoulder

09.01.2022 Winter sport is in full swing which means increased time on the field for young athletes. A common complaint we start to see around this time of the year is heel (Sever’s Disease) or anterior knee pain (Osgood-Schlatter/Sinding-Larsen), especially in physically active young athletes who are about to or have already begun puberty. It has been suggested that the long bones in the leg (tibia and femur) grow faster that the surrounding soft tissue causing muscles and tendons to p...ull on attachment points. Symptoms - Pain around insertion points (ie. heel, knee cap) - Pain during and after sport/exercise, especially with running or jumping activities - Pain that increases after exercise when the body has cooled down - Tender or swollen bump - Muscle tightness through calf or quads Treatment and management options like anything will differ depending on the severity. With these types of conditions they can usually be managed whilst still participating in sport. Our physiotherapists use the following a number of the following in their management/ treatment plans: - Relative Rest and Modified Activity: work out what and how activity to participate in without flaring symptoms up - Ice Packs: applied post activity - Soft tissue work/ massage/ foam rolling - Correction of biomechanical issues that may be contributing to or worsening the condition - Looking at footwear or inserts in shoes (eg. formthotic or heel cup) If you have any questions about these sorts of injuries, give the clinic a call on 9913 2632 or 9979 5291 #physioward #seversdisease #osgoodschlatter #sindinglarsen #kneepain #heelpain #narrabeenphysio #newportphysio #northernbeachesphysio #beachesphysios #physiowardsportsandrehab

07.01.2022 As the weather gets warmer, we tend to see an increase in Achilles injuries, Plantar Fasciitis and Ankle strains. Changing from supportive enclosed shoes into sandals or flip flops reduces the arch and overall support for our feet and ankles If you begin to experience anything of this sort, we recommend checking what footwear you are wearing. Walking around barefoot or in unsupportive shoes can result in a variety of injuries ... Give the clinic a call if you have any questions or would like to book an appointment! 01.01.2022 Sam recognised that a big part of why he plays footy is so that he is able to hang out with his mates. He also realised that after rugby players retire they can struggle to find something to replace the time with. There is nothing better than getting together with a group of blokes. Whats even more important to Sam is to provide an environment where they feel it is safe for them to talk and they will be supported.... If you would like to join us at the Rats Shed we meet every Wednesday at Concept42 Gym at 6:15pm. Bring a friend along and see what the Rats Shed is about. Sam will be there to help with any injuries you may have throughout the exercise session. @therugbyshedaustralia #theratsshed #therugbyshedaustralia See more
