25.01.2022 Let's talk Rechelle Hawkes! (Because it's the ISC Hockey finals and we're excited about hockey this weekend!) Hawkes was captain of the Aussie Womens Hockey Team (known as the Hockeyroo's) for eight years. She became the second woman after Dawn Fraser to win three Olympic gold medals at three separate Olympic Games. Hawkes had the honour of reading the Athlete's Olympic Oath at the Sydney Olympics in 2000.... In 1989 she was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia, and was made a member of the Order of Australia in the 2018 Australia Day Honours. 23.01.2022 Box jumps are a plyometric exercise used to build muscles in your quads, hamstrings, glutes and calves. The jumps train these muscles to react quickly to explosive movements, such as the starting block launch or each push off the wall. The beauty of the box jump is you can adapt it to your varying performance needs, doing low reps of a higher box to improve your power or doing high reps of a lower box to deal with the lactic acid that comes with a quick-repeat, loaded movemen...t. You can start by choosing a box around the same height as your shins, lowering into a quarter squat, swinging your arms behind you and bringing them forwards quickly as you jump! Make sure you are landing with both feet flat on the box and both arms out in front, in motorbike stance. Jamie was recognised in 2012 as Young Player of the Year by the International Hockey Association by winning silver medal at the World Cup and a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games!! Jamie also played for our national team (The Kookaburra's!) until 2012. Jamie's most famous for scoring a goal during extra time at the Athens Olympics in 2004,... which saw Australia win gold and Dwyer take the title of best player in the world. Keep your torso long and raise from the waist. - Begin with your feet flat on the ground, as you progress, you can raise your feet to float - but maintain stability. - Unlike the lady in the picture...extend your arms for maximum core work! Like the picture in the bottom right :) - When you twist, move your whole upper body to the side rather than only your arms. Tip: where your eyes go, there your body will follow!

It also challenges your core and increases stability in smaller muscles that may get overlooked in a basic squat. TECHNIQUE: Start standing facing away from a bench or chair. Place the top of your right toes on the bench or chair with slight bend in right knee. Place hands on hips for balance. Bend left knee to lower right knee to floor. Press through left heel to return to starting position.

If you haven't swum for a while, make sure you're not over-training muscles that have deteriorated during isolation or are fatigued after the sudden activity. Correct stroke mechanics during training is important to keep an eye on too, most injuries come from a misuse of repeated movements, and in a sport where repetition lays the foundation there is high potential ...for this to occur. After winning six medals at the 2019 World Champs, she's got all of Australia's attention heading into Tokyo 2021! Not to mention she's a local here in Wollongong...Go Emma!! Emma McKeon has the reputation of being a multi-event athlete, entering EIGHT races at the recent World Champs. Her Coach Michael Bohl said in the Sydney Morning Herald that legends like Michael Phelps... have been the source of her inspiration along the way, winning record golds in a variety of events. "You learn from people like Michael Phelps in Beijing. He did a very good job. In 2008, his heats were measured, the semis he was stronger and the finals he was awesome," Michael Bohl told the Sydney Morning Herald. Guess we know her game plan for Tokyo! Both quickly decided to pursue swimming after witnessing the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. In 2012 Bronte and Cate became the first siblings to qualify for the Olympics in the same event - the 50m freestyle. The sprinters were both part of the gold medal-winning 400m freestyle team in London. ... When the Illawarra escarpment is your backyard, the kilometres clocked up for many, not down! There were many record-breaking climbs of Sublime Point, some non-stop over days and nights. There were influxes of people joining local trail running groups, and trail adventure stores have never seen better days! What better sport to jump into to appreciate the beautif...ul part of the world we live in?
