This Forbes article proposes that we look at work life and home life negotiation, rather than "balance." See if it works for you: #worklifebalance #careertips

13.01.2022 My 22 year old son walks past me in the kitchen. I want to have a conversation with him. I say something light like, "How are you going?" and I see him cringe. ...He doesn't want to answer such a vague question or believe I have something to offer him. The question I used to hopefully spend some time with him has failed me. I visit my mother, now 91, regularly and every time she asks, "Are you happy with your life?" and I struggle to give an answer to the question. While I know she wants to start a conversation, just like my son, I cringe at what my answer could be. But the other day when she asked me, I stopped and decided to engage more honestly than usual. I asked about her situation. She told me she had some poems she wrote years ago that she would like to work on but couldn't see well enough to do it herself. I asked her to find them and offered to re-type them for her. Yesterday, with my laptop ready, we started work on the poems. Her failing eyesight frustrated her as she couldn't read the handwritten amendments in the margins but she knew the poems off by heart. They are written in Estonian. She wanted me to understand the meaning of various words and translated some of them as she read. At first, I resisted. "I will type them for you mum, but I don't need to understand every word," I said. I was wrong. As we worked through the poems, I began to understand the beauty of the language she was using and the intricacy of her thoughts. I was drawn into another time and places, into her private moments. I began to ask her what the poems were about, every word. Those simple questions you are asked like, "How are you going?" could allow you to start a conversation and begin to know someone more deeply than you can imagine. Everyone has a story to share, wisdom to offer. Is there someone in your life you could stop for today and listen to a little more deeply?
