25.01.2022 Righto rad folk check this bit of awesomeness out. Now as you all know we are all about building a circular economy here at Echo Valley. We are passionate about... getting as much yield stream (waste from food distribution and food manufacturing, it’s not waste it’s undervalued yield) product back to the farm as possible. We use it as livestock feed, as compost, to feed our worm farm, and ultimately as soil life food. But what about the packaging, one of the down side to this farm enterprise is the bullsht level of packaging we have to manage. We do our best to find uses for this stuff the cardboard and paper packaging is pretty straightforward it is either turned into bio char or soaked and added to our compost but the plastic petroleum products are another challenge. We recycle what we can but keep in mind folks there ain’t no bin service out here we can’t just dump it in the yellow topped wheelie bin and assume someone else will take care of it for us. And then there is these filthy buggers. Styrofoam boxes we sometimes feel like the burial grounds for all the food distribution groups around south east Queensland when their styros are no longer useable . So when we got to know Mana, Keith and their beautiful family from Warwick we were pretty stoked. These guys are building an amazing operation. They are using all manner of regenerative systems including native bees that pollinate their plants. But the best bit is, it’s not just to grow food for themselves, they are passionate about rebuilding the seed bank of heritage vegetable varieties and the collection and production of wild edible plants (some of us call these weeds) building a food economy based on solidarity, and community can create outcomes far beyond our expectations. Who knew that collecting rotten veggies in dirty old styro’s would facilitate the opportunity for the growth and production of endangered plant varieties. Well done Mana and Keith you guys rock. And I look forward to dropping off the next load of boxes and seeing what you have grown next. #solidarity #regenerativeagriculture #circulareconomy #4goods #lookingtocommunity #community #betterfoodsystem #learningbydoing #reducewaste See more

04.01.2022 Today marks the 113th birthday of marine biologist and author Rachel Carson, whose writing on pesticides helped to launch the modern environmental movement! Car...son published her famous work "Silent Spring" in 1962 which documented the dangers of indiscriminate use of synthetic pesticides, especially on bird populations. Though its publication was met with strong opposition from the chemical industry, the scientific community largely supported her conclusions. "Silent Spring" also served as a rallying point for the young environment movement just gaining momentum at the time of its publication. The book fueled public interest in environmental and public health issues and, within a few years, the Nixon Administration formed the Environmental Protection Agency. Much of the EPA's early work focused on issues raised by Carson's work such as a 1972 law regulating pesticides and a US ban on the agricultural use of DDT. Carson's book "Silent Spring" is considered one of the twentieth century's most influential works of non-fiction and, in 2006, the editors of Discover Magazine named it one of the 25 greatest science books of all time. For her many contributions to environmental conservation, President Carter posthumously awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom. To introduce children to the trailblazing Rachel Carson, we highly recommend "Rachel Carson & Her Book that Changed the World" for ages 5 to 9 (https://www.amightygirl.com/rachel-carson-book) and "Who Was Rachel Carson" for ages 8 to 12 (https://www.amightygirl.com/who-was-rachel-carson) There is also an excellent new biography / science activity guide, "Rachel Carson and Ecology for Kids," for ages 9 and up at https://www.amightygirl.com/rachel-carson-and-ecology-for-k For adult readers, we highly recommend "Rachel Carson: Witness for Nature" at https://www.amightygirl.com/rachel-carson-witness To read Carson's pioneering work "Silent Spring," visit https://amzn.to/2Abhtl0 And, for many books for kids about the importance of protecting the environment, visit our special feature on the "Top Children's Books on the Environment" at https://www.amightygirl.com//top-children-s-books-on-the-e
