25.01.2022 Entertainment in 1898 Ipswich??? Ipswich photographer Benjamin Taylor organised a fundraising event for the Ipswich Hospital in July 1898. Curios included a three-legged cat, belonging to a Constable Fagg, or Lowood, and the Freak of Nature depicted in the image. ... The "freak" was first found in 1856, at South Head, Sydney. Mr. W. Leftwitch, a hotelier, found the freak in a load of wood. Attracted by its resemblance to a headless man, Leftwitch saved the freak from the fire and put it on display in his hotel, where it became ‘an object of great attention’, with Leftwitch claiming that the ‘man-tree’ was worth 50 a year to his business. The freak was part of the trunk and branches of a stunted honey-suckle tree, and had been ‘in no way improved by the hand of man’. By 1898, the honey-suckle wood was with Mr. Leftwich’s daughter, Mrs. Thompson of Mount Crosby. The images of the freak of nature were published in ‘The Queenslander’ and were available for purchase at the exhibition, with all proceeds going to the hospital. The evening ended with a magic-lantern display by Mr. J. Hermann. In total, 5 7s. 6d. were raised on the day, with the three-legged cat and the man tree proving ‘a source of great amusement to the juveniles’. (Information from ‘An Exhibition of Curios’, The Queensland Times, Saturday 9 July 1898, p.4; ‘Exhibition of Curios’, The Queensland Times, Tuesday 12 July 1898, p.4; ‘A Freak of Nature’, The Queenslander, Saturday 16 July 1898, p. 120; ‘The Ipswich Hospital: Meeting of the Board of Management’, The Queensland Times, Saturday 23 July 1898, p.2).

23.01.2022 Group of people standing in the Water Hyacinths on the Bremer River, Ipswich, 1908 Benjamin & Laura Taylor, I.X.L. Studios, Ipswich Hyacinth, a bulbous plant with blue flowers, was originally introduced to Australia as an ornamental from South America in the 1890s. Placed in the garden ponds of the Royal Botanic Gardens in Sydney, it soon spread into the river system, making its way to Queensland. Waste from industry along the Bremer River caused abundant levels of nitrogen, ...phosphorus and potassium to build up, creating a perfect environment for hyacinth. In December 1900, the river was choked with raft size floating growths reaching 4ft. in height and creating bridges of foliage that could carry an adult’s weight. The hyacinth reached from the southern bank of the Bremer River, as far as Lynch’s Crossing, through to the Tivoli Bridge, Moore’s Pocket, Waterstown, Bremer Mills, Goodna and around the Junction. The hyacinth became so thick and dense that it caused navigation on the river to come to a halt until it could be cleared. The hyacinth became a recurring problem in the Bremer. 21.01.2022 The first bridge to cross the Bremer River was erected in 1860. It was a floating bridge, suspended between two large punts. In 1865 a high level bridge, at the end of Nicholas Street, was erected for use by the railway and traffic, constructed by Peto, Brassey and Betts, becoming the first railway bridge in Queensland. A new railway bridge (current rail bridge) was latter erected alongside the old one, which became entirely a road bridge. This bridge is now the Bradfield Bridge, used by pedestrians.

03.01.2022 Answers to this weekend's Picture Ipswich Quiz: Q. Ipswich & East Suffolk Hospital was opened in 1836. What year was the Ipswich (Qld.) General Hospital opened? A. March 2, 1860.... Q. Ipswich UK's St Stephen's Church was mentioned in Little Domesday, 1086. What year was Ipswich Qld's St Stephen's Church built? A. In 1855 the NSW Government gave the church one acre of land on the corner of Limestone and Gordon Streets. Brisbane contractor John Petrie built a stone church with a square tower, but this church was later demolished as the foundations were proved to be faulty. (source: Queensland Times, Lattice and Lace by Robyn Buchanan, date unknown.) This church building, located on the corner of Limestone & Gordon Streets, was built in 1866. Q. Ipswich UK's Rising Sun Inn dates back to 1485. What year was Rosewood's Rising Sun first open. A. Along the Toowoomba Road there was an early hotel, kept by William O’Brien, named the Sunrise Hotel. After it burnt down, James Ryan built a new hotel, closer to the railway station, and named it the Rising Sun. This also burnt down towards the end of 1878, supposedly struck by lightning during a thunderstorm, and was rebuilt the following year. The current Rising Sun hotel was designed by Ipswich architect Will Haenke in 1908 and was built by C. Risdale, with work starting around December 1908. The Haenke designed two-storey hotel dominates its corner position, with single storey wings extending south and east of the main block. The Federation style building bares the hallmarks of Haenke’s stylistic approach: the bell-cast roof of the upper projecting balcony, the corner roof turret, decorative valances on street awnings and the large lunette window into the public bar. The 1908 plans show a large circular bar with shelves of cedar and pine for the display of liquors and a billiard room on the ground floor, with four large and two small rooms on the upper floor. As no kitchen appears in the plans, it is thought the 1879 hotel remained on site, to be used for this purpose.

03.01.2022 In 1930, as the Great Depression began to take its toll, the Ipswich community united over a cause: the building of a dedicated children's ward at the Ipswich Hospital. Queensland Times journalist Fred Ware, better known as Uncle William, had helped to establish the Sunshine League in 1919, to raise funds for children in hospital. Now, he called upon his young readers to work towards a higher goal. Within 4 years, the children of the Sunshine League, along with the Ipswich... community, had raised 3890. With a further 5000 coming from the government, construction on the Sunshine Ward was able to commence in 1934. The foundation stone was laid on the 4 December 1934, by the visiting Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester, with several thousand gathering to watch the ceremony, including young patients in cots, wheeled out into the sunshine for the special Royal occasion. The ward itself was opened on the 28th July 1935. Join us on Tuesday 24th November 2020, 6.00 pm to 7.00 pm for a very special Chasing Our Past At Home.
